Mayor Gavin Newsom requested last month that the ID card plan - closely watched by other cities considering similar initiatives - be suspended "until a thorough review has been completed," according to a letter sent to the city administrator.
"The mayor wants to proceed cautiously with this program to ensure that it complies with all applicable federal and state laws," Nathan Ballard, the mayor's spokesman, said Thursday.
The plan has provoked debate over the rights of immigrants, but Newsom has said he sees it as a practical move that will make it easier for San Francisco citizens to qualify for local services and for city government workers to determine who is eligible to receive them.
The law, which was scheduled to take effect at the end of August, was modeled after a program launched in New Haven, Connecticut. Similar initiatives are under consideration in New York City and Miami.

The ID card plan is the target of a lawsuit filed by the Washington-based Immigration Reform Law Institute, which argues that the city approved the program without accounting for the environmental impact that the influx of new immigrants would have on the city. City Attorney Dennis Herrera plans to ask a judge later this month to toss out the lawsuit.

As for San Francisco: It declared handgun ownership illegal. Even that souvenir Luger that grandpa brought home from the Battle of the Bulge is illegal. Even that .22 pistol that Dad carried on the farm.
Gun control doesn''t work. Never has.
Now, Friscoers want to open their arms to a group that has flagrantly violated the laws of the nation: illegal aliens. What part of "illegal" don''t you understand?
Time and again, Friscoers have insulted the American military with various proclamations calling for the removal or banning of military bases and missions.
Fine. When the big earthquake hits then Friscoers can depend upon illegal aliens to help them.
Don''t send the military to help.
And unarmed Friscoers will become prey to the roving bands of armed criminals that will take what they want, just like in New Orleans.
San Francisco is ruled by a politically correct dictatorship.

- Illegals also purchase; Taco Bell, Radio Shack, a pair of shoes etc...They work for businesses who also pay taxes. If you are so worried about them not paying taxes, we should push Congress to pass a reform Bill to legalize them!

- This is simple. There should be no sanctuary in the USA for these criminals. Maybe we should just take all of the criminals out of the jails and give them a city somewhere to live in. Wake up folks, and tell your government to send them back across the border.
