Palin-Mania Sweeping Nation

Almost Anything With Her Name On It Selling Like Hotcakes, Reports John Blackstone

  • Timeline Palin's Path

A look at Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin's life and career

  • Photo Essay Sarah Palin

Alaska's youngest and first female governor tabbed to be McCain's running mate.

(CBS)  There's a new economic boom in Alaska -- and it has nothing to do with oil.

Call it "Palin-mania."

Companies are cashing in on a new craze sweeping the country sparked by the sudden fame of John McCain's running mate, Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin, reports CBS News correspondent John Blackstone.

The new cottage industry involves anything carrying her name.

Palin is, of course, no longer "Sarah Who?" and, a week after her stunning naming to the Republican ticket, Palin items have become hot properties.

From t-shirts to thong underwear, from the flattering to the not-so-flattering, sales of just about everything related to the McCain-Palin ticket have been flying off shelves, at the just-concluded GOP convention in St. Paul, Minn., on the Internet, and other settings, Blackstone says.

In Anchorage, silk screeners are working overtime to meet nationwide demand for Palin t-shirts.

"We're trying to strike while the iron is hot -- be quick," explains John Williams, production manager for Alaska Serigraphics.

It began a week ago, when McCain named her to the ticket. The iron got even hotter when Palin spoke Wednesday night at the convention.

For t-shirt makers, one of her lines was particularly inspiring: "You know the difference between a pit bull and a hockey mom? Lipstick."

"Immediately," says Williams, "I'm just like, 'God, I could reach in and kiss her! This is perfect! Everybody's gonna love it.' "

By Thursday morning, an artist was hard at work on the pitbull/lipstick design. The shirts haven't even been printed yet but, says Williams, buyers are already lining up: "They're ordering it sight unseen. They don't care. They just want it."

In one Anchorage shop, Ann Bickford was scooping up Palin t-shirts. How many? "I'm buying so many, I lost count," she laughed.

The shirts Jim Dooley is selling at his Anchorage athletic supply store keep the message simple, saying "McCain/Palin," but that hasn't hurt sales.

"We've had more people in here this last three days than we probably have in three or four months," Dooley told Blackstone.

At the Republican convention, Paul collectibles celebrated more than just her politics. One said, "A hero and a hottie."

If the souvenir sellers there had had their way, Palin might be at the top of the ticket: One item said, "Strong girls vote for Palin/McCain."

One woman says she sold all 10,000 Palin buttons she had.

Pain's leap to fame is also benefiting such Web sites as CafePress.com, which now has an inventory of 137,000 Palin-related items.

And for those who just can't get enough of Alaska's governor's celebrity, the Web is now overflowing with impersonators on video.

One, from Lisanova, has racked up a half-million hits on YouTube since its debut three days ago.

It has a McCain impersonator saying, "Susan?"

"Sarah," a Palin impersonator corrects him.

"Pawlin?" the McCain actor says.

"Palin!" replies the frustrated Palin actor.

"Do you want to be my vee-pee?" asks "McCain."

"Yes. I'll be your vee pee," is the response. "Now let's talk policy."

The t-shirts, says Blackstone, printed with pride in Anchorage, are about more than a governor, it seems.

"Alaska's waited a long time to kind of be on the map, so to speak; we're kind of overlooked up here," Williams says.

But now, Blackstone points out, the cold state has the hottest name in politics.

Some of the more popular catchphrases on Palin-related products: "Sarah-Cuda," "Palin Power," and a t-shirt saying, "I'm voting for Sarah Palin -- Oh, yeah -- and that old guy, too!" Another one: "Global warming doesn't kill polar bears. Sarah Palin does. With her bare hands."

Less flattering ones, which the other side could snap up, include these phrases: "Caribou Barbie," "McBush/Quaylen," and "McCain and the Naughty Librarian."

This story goes way beyond the scope of politics--the trashing in the media is offensive to women who consider themselves Republican and Democrat. There will be a lot of "Democrat" women crossing over to vote for Palin in this election and the liberal media continues to grind her down.

Katie Couric, Anne Curry, Soledad O''Brien, Campbell Brown, Oprah, the cast of the View, and the rest of them are going to wake up in a few days or weeks after they get slapped across the face with all the backlash from their core audience--everyday American women.

- Teaching creationism in public school
- Radical views on banning abortions in case of rape or incest
- Blaming mistakes like Iraq War on God''s will
- Supporting abstinence only education in school
- Not supporting funding programs for preventing teen pregnancies
- Supported censoring materials from public school libraries
- Supported Alaska Independence Party
- Lobbying for ear marks and projecting as a reformer
- Misuse of Power - TrooperGate
- Supported bridge to nowhere and then opposed it when it became politically convenient

I am going to have a 10000 bumper stickers made
"I like Sarah!!"

I actually like all of the candidates this year...but you can''t help cheering for the underdog...especially the way Sarah was treated by the press. Because she upset the Obama apple cart and stole his thunder after as Joe biden said he had reached up " and pulled lightening from the sky"...I LOVE the IRONY. In Politics ...one should never gloat until the REAL OPINION POLLS are in.....THE ACTUAL VOTE...how many times will the arrogant and condesending democrats learn this????? This arrogant attitude shoots them in the foot everytime...especially their arrogant followers....they are like a bunch of scientoloists in that you cannot disagree with them with being totally castigated or mocked or saying the want to put your name on toilet paper...absolutely crude. You can tell alot about the principles of a party by the caliber, and charater of the people it attracts.

Who would have thought after last Thursday ---I thought the republicans were out for the count after OBama''s amazing speech. If McCain wins his MUCH Maligned decision both by the media and members of his own party establisment will look like the greatest political move in the history of politics...either way...even if he loses he showed guts and creativity by going against his advisors and for that alone I say Viva McCAIN!!!

37 million people got to watch her without the "media filters" and with all of the pressure on her she glowed...you have to be an extremely biased person not to see this....EVEN CHRIS MATTHEWS the biggest Obama lover there is acknowledged

Humm....
1. Palin and her Christian conservative beliefs versus Obama''s direct association with a known and admitted terrorist?

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Controversy_over_an_Obama%E2%80%93Ayers_connection

2. Palin''s track record going across party lines to include Democrats and Independents in her Alaska staff versus Obama''s 100% voting track record for Democrats. (Not counting the 190 times he voted "present" instead of taking a definite position of key issues which would alienate him with the Liberal Left)

WOW! What a country!

Yes, I love Palin mania. I''m an Obama supporter and he raised 10 million in one day after the baracuda''s speech. BTW, Republicans are hypocrites. Would you have the same response to the Palin family crisis if it had been Hillary Clinton''s family? I don''t think so.

Sally_1

-Was against FISA before he voted for it.
-Supports allowing babies who live through an abortion to be denied medical care.
-Has a running mate who''s son is a lobbyist.
-Worked with convicted terrorists.
-Has asked for numerous earmarks for his acquaintances and family, including his wife''s hospital, the church he went to, Michael Phleger''s church, and Tony Rezco.
-Only won his first public office by disqualifying every single candidate running against him because the incumbant was popular and he knew he couldn''t win.
-Refused to actually vote on legislation that had the potential to show his actual stance of any topic.
-During the primary his campaign was accused of speaking to Canadian ambassadors and saying that their speech against NAFTA was "rhetoric." Denied that vehemently, but after winning the primary admitted that he had only been caught up in the heat of the moment and using "campaign rhetoric".
-Aligned himself with Emil Jones, who proceeded to use his position as President of the State legislature in Illinois to take legislation from other members of the legislature and put Obama''s name on the piece to give him "experience".
-Served as the Harvard Law Review editor, but never had anything published.
-Repeatedly denigrates women and the middle class. He and his campaign constantly says nasty things like, "women have no where else to go, so they''ll come back." Or "they cling to guns and religion"

So I think I''ll pass.

The choice of a powerful woman for VP who has more experience in governance that NObama has left NObama''s campaign powerless and shows the grave mistake Barack made not choosing Hillary Clinton for VP, choosing instead an old Washington politician, an by doing so negating the flag of change.

Hillary supporters who are still scared by the mistreatment and attacks of the liberal media who shamelessly destroyed Hillary''s presidential bid are now resigned to put our country first and vote for the republican ticket to elect a president that is qualified and has the experience to deal with all the complexed problems our country is facing and also to demonstrate that a woman can handle successfully any job including being the commander in chief.

Hillary supporters have no other choice that to choose our country first and elect a a qualified president and a woman in the white house!

Country First! McCain/Palin!

She has no connections with Washington Insiders
No family members that are in Politics
No Multi-Millionaire Husband

The pro obama press is just upset that her arrival upset the Obama apple cart and took attention away from his speeech las t Thursday.

Moni - um, McCain has bragged about voting with Bush over 90% of the time, so don''t even go there. Facts, not anecdotes, back up the fact that the Republican talking points are more lies, stretches and exaggerations than any shred of truth. Republicans are guilty of the politics of destruction, fear and hate, as can be witnessed by anyone who watched any of the convention. Republicans voting the party line (including St McCain) are what caused the largest deficit in this country''s history - and what makes that even worse, George Bush took over this country with a $300+ billion surplus, yet we''re now almost $500 billion in deficit - that''s an almost $800 billion swing. Or to put it in scarier terms, George Bush squandered nearly ONE TRILLION DOLLARS in just 8 years.

The speeches by Rudy Giuliani, former Republican poster boy until he was shamed during the primary season, Fred Thompson, Mitt Romney and, yes, golden-girl Sarah ''Barracuda'', were laced with hate, scorn, disrespect and derision. As for her comment about the only difference between pit bulls and hockey moms is lipstick - well, consider this from the Leerburg Video and Kennel: ''The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention examined U.S. dog-attack fatalities from 1979 to 1998. During that period, dogs killed more than 300 Americans, and pit bulls, either purebred or crossbred, accounted for 76 of the deaths, the most of any breed.'' Comparing herself to a pit bull is NOT an endearing trait. A friend of mine''s dog was attacked by two pit bulls who wandered into HIS yard, and he almost died. Yet the pit bull line received manic applause. This is the mindset of the Republican party. Viciousness, attack, degradation ...

You need to open your eyes and look much closer at what is being said by the gods in your party. Karl Rove once destroyed McCain''s character when he was running for president in 2000 - now Rove is one of his closest advisors and the architect of the current slash and burn rhetoric these McCain surrogates continue to spew. Yet McCain says he wants to be nonpartisan. Get rid of the hate speech and lies, start talking about what YOU''RE going to be doing for America, not fabrications of what the opponent won''t do. Oh, and by the way - whether Obama voted 100% for Democratic platforms is only part of the story. The platforms the Democrats espouse are geared toward every American, regardless of class, gender or political inclination. Republican platforms, however, are almost never about the average American but rather aim toward the top income earners in the country. So McCain wants to change things (funny, they denigrated Obama for wanting to change things and then they adopted the same platform). Let him start by stopping the vicious lies, rumours, attacks and destruction his surrogates are putting out.

Tim - George Bush is ivy-league-educated, not that you could tell. And you need to read the newest revelation about your latest celebrity: 6 colleges in 6 years for Palin - (AP) Republican vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin seems to have switched colleges at least six times in six years, including two stints at the University of Idaho before graduating from there in 1987.

Seems she couldn''t commit herself to any of her schools for any length of time. Just another character flaw amongst a slew of them that continue to come to light.

(imagine a lil gal that changed schools 6 times did that...go ahead and keep underestimating and be arrogant...that is the attitude that the democrats continue to make and it turns people off when it comes to the ONLY opinion Poll that matters- ELECTION DAY...and you wonder why you keep losing elections. I actually like Barack..all the candidates for once...but the democratic base comes across as viscious and arrogant to the avg middle american voter...this is fact. This is so stupid that it''s beyond belief! Palin mania, all she has shown is that she''s a nasty, hypocritical, UNChristian attack dog! The fact that anyone in their right mind would seriously consider her to be literally a heartbeat away from running this country is not only scarey but proves that the Republicans do NOT care about the U.S. but rather their own agenda''s at all costs. They would apparently happily jeopardize this country on behalf of that. Wake up American, and see the danger in this woman and the mcsame/palin ticket!

Tim - but the democratic base comes across as vicious and arrogant to the avg middle American voter. - you need to go back and read the texts of Giuliani, Thompson and Romney''s speeches. Not to mention Palin''s. My comment about Palin switching schools spoke to her inability to follow up on something she started, not just once but on five separate occasions before she finally graduated. I''ve been back in school since 2001 - straight through - and have acquired an Associate of Science degree and will have my Bachelor''s Degree after this semester. And I''ll be 50 next month. I couldn''t tell you how many times I had to push myself to keep going, but I have ... I committed myself to finishing, which she obviously didn''t do. And her degree is in Journalism, not anything to do with government, economics or industry - even though she has never done anything more than a few months as a sportscaster to make use of her degree. How much do you want to bet that she used public money to get that degree? And one other thing - Sarah Palin is not running for president, so to say that its ''about time some real- non-ivy league educated, non connected Americans started running this country'' is disingenuous since SHE will not be running the country.

Now all of those Hillary "supporters" who only wanted a "woman" to be in power are finding one.

Tell me how stupid or ignorant JMc is compared to BO.

This decision is going to ruin BO''s chances in November. Palin can do/say anything she wants, and it will not change the minds of her woman supporters. They are going to get a woman in power and they are going to elect her.

I just happen to think the democrats attacking Palin is going to backfire in a big way with avg Americans. You can agree or disagree that is your option.

FACT IS she came out swinging because the press...instead of giving half a chance had their scopes dialed onto the welcome mat ready to pick her off...and I , and many other americans are not blind to the presses hypocrisy after giving Obama a free pass. We rooted for her under these conditions and she DELIVERED! She deserves EVEN the grudging acknowledgment of many in the media that she did an EXCELLENT job under the cirmcumstances. And many of them including the obama worshipping Chris Matthrews did acknowledge to their credit...now if the smug Keith olberman would do the same! To say she did not hit a home run the other night under the circumstances is delusional. But whatever..I think at least we have an interesting race now and I can understand why some democrats are upset because...whether they want to admit it or not she connected with alot of potential voters.

The best way for Sen. Obama to counter GOP `decoy` Sarah Palin and get women on his side is to help Sen. Clinton retire her 24 million dollar campaign debt and float the idea of giving her a Cabinet position inside his administration, a short term solution that would pay huge dividends right away!

This election is NOT about personalities. It is about positions. How a Hillary voter can vote for Palin is borderline crazy. As men, not all women are alike. This election should not be about gender or race. The decision is too important. The last eight years have been devastating for our country.

Think America! Don''t be fooled by Madison Avenue tactics.

Yeah, she has a great delivery, with all the right punctuations and body language (I know I would crumble under the same conditions). Hate to say it, but she reminds me of GW Bush in her ability to deliver a speech.

Well, different people see thing different ways. I think that she gave a very good speech. Some think someone wrote the speech for her. I have news for everybody. They all have someone write their speeches for them. From the President on down. Of course they will have some input as what they wont to say.
I don''t see how anyone can say that is was a speech like Mr. Bush would give.....:-) But, like I said, everyone to their on thinking. I think that it is great that we can say what we like.

did anyone else noticed that the Republicans paraded their families for display and really hyped their sons service? when the media looks at their family they cry foul but they can do it when it''s to their advantage . not to mention Senator Biden''s son who is also going to Iraq this fall. double standard the old Republican playbook.

Yeah at least she doesn''t have a history of plagiariziing speeches like the other VP candidate...but I am sure that they won''t bring that up about Biden..because after all that was 20 yrs ago when he was 50. (6 years older than Palin is now)

She was AUTHENTICally American and to suggest otherewise is GRASPING for straws...
..after all..she gave HER background and HER record....get over it ..she did great

Everyday women do not as a majority have pregnant 17-year-old daughters.
