Palin Said Apt To "Cut, Kill, Dig, Drill"

McCain's Running Mate Has Had Frequent Run-Ins With Environmentalists, Especially In Alaska

  • Timeline Palin's Path

A look at Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin's life and career

(AP)  At the National Governors Association conference where she first met John McCain, Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin had other business: making her case to Interior Secretary Dirk Kempthorne against classifying the polar bear as a threatened species.

Months later she sued Kempthorne, arguing that the Bush administration didn't use the best science in concluding that without further protection, the polar bear faces eventual extinction because of disappearing sea ice as the result of global warming.

Palin, McCain's vice presidential running mate, has had frequent run-ins with environmentalists.

In her 20 months as governor, Palin has questioned the conclusions of federal marine scientists who say the Cook Inlet beluga whale needs protection under the federal Endangered Species Act.

She has defended Alaska's right to shoot down wolves from the air to boost caribou and moose herds for hunters, and - contrary to a view held by McCain - is not convinced that global warming is the result of human activity.

Environmentalists have nicknamed Palin the "killa from Wasilla," a reference to the small town where she formerly was mayor.

"Her philosophy from our perspective is cut, kill, dig and drill," said John Toppenberg, director of the Alaska Wildlife Alliance, maintaining she is "in the Stone Age of wildlife management and is very opposed to utilizing accepted science."

While acknowledging the climate is changing, Palin expresses doubt as to whether emissions from human activities are causing it. McCain, on the other hand, supports legislation to reduce heat-trapping pollutants, primarily from the burning of oil and coal.

"John McCain was all about global warming and the integrity of the science. The selection of Sarah Palin is a complete reversal from that position," said Rep. Brad Miller, D-N.C., who traveled to the South Pole with McCain in 2006 to visit with scientists studying climate change. "She is disturbingly part of the pattern of the Bush administration in their approach to science generally and the science of the environment in particular."

The McCain campaign Wednesday characterized Palin as a leader on climate change, noting she set up a sub-cabinet office to map out state response strategies and sought $1.1 million in federal funds to help communities threatened by coastal erosion and other effects.

Palin's administration relied in part on research from scientists funded by the oil industry to fight against the polar bear's listing, arguing that the impact of global warming on the bear 20 years from now can't be predicted. But e-mails obtained by a University of Alaska professor show that the state's marine mammal experts supported the federal government's conclusions on the bear.

Doug Vincent-Lang, Alaska's endangered species coordinator, said that while there were differences in opinion about the science, the state's position on the polar bear "was not a decision to protect resource development in the state."

Supporters say Palin, a self-described hockey mom who knows how to handle a gun and dress a moose and once worked as a commercial fisherman, is simply a reflection of her home state, where the extraction of oil, natural gas, gold, zinc, fish and other natural resources is the primary source of state income and jobs.

The polar bear isn't the only wildlife issue where Palin's administration is at odds with environmentalists and at times with the Bush administration and members of Congress.

For example:

  • Her administration disputes conclusions by the federal National Marine Fisheries Service and its science advisers that the beluga whale population is in critical danger. The state argues that 2007 data shows the whale rebounding.

  • Palin opposed a state ballot initiative to increase protection of salmon streams from mining operations. It was defeated.

  • She also opposed a ballot initiative barring the shooting of wolves and bears from aircraft except in biological emergencies. It was also defeated.

Under Palin, the state Board of Game authorized for the first time in 20 years the shooting of wolves by state wildlife officials from helicopters. The order resulted in the controversial shooting this summer of 14 one-month-old wolf pups taken from dens on a remote peninsula 800 miles southwest of Anchorage - an act that environmentalists claim was illegal.

State officials characterized the killings as humanitarian, saying the pups would have suffered and eventually died without the care of their parents. Environmentalists argued they were killed to boost caribou populations to the benefit of hunters.

Like many other Alaska officials, Palin argues her critics don't understand the North Country.

Rep. George Miller, D-Calif., who has complained Alaska is killing more wolves than necessary and has pushed a bill that would put additional restrictions on the aerial killing of predators, has been among Palin's targets.

Miller "doesn't understand rural Alaska, doesn't comprehend wildlife management in the North, and doesn't appreciate the Tenth Amendment of the U.S. Constitution that gives states the right to manage their own affairs," Palin said in a press release a year ago.

Join us on a campaign with major womens groups to boycott, pull advertising from, and email our dissatisfaction to the editors of these major news networks who have been and who currently are being sexist towards Sarah Palin, Hillary Clinton and women in general. These networks include US Magazine, Huffington Post, Daily Kos, Associated Press, MSNBC, CNN, New York Times, Newsweek, Time, Washington Post, US News and World Report, Rolling Stone, Mens Journal along with ABC and CBS News.

When Colorado Democratic Party leader Billy Compton intimidated Sacha Millstone asking her to resign as a Delegate because she had second thoughts on Obama was outrageous! When the sexist/racist Emil Jones called Delmarie Cobb who supported Hillary an "Uncle Tom" infuriates us women!

As a woman I can''''t beieve that it is the Republican Party who chose a woman as their VP. It shows the sexism that exists in our current Democratic Party and it is disgraceful!

I am proud to be one out of the 18 million of us so called "Disgruntled Hillary supporters" who will be voting for McCain and especially Palen now that McCain has shown the courage to chose a woman and his VP. The Obama campaign had been sexist towards Hillary and we women are not going to tolerate it anymore.

We are asking other Democratic women to join us in sending a message to our Democratic Party Leadership and the sexist liberally biased media by voting McCain/Palin!.

Palin is sounding more and more a female version of Cheney. Her policies have f-cked up Alaska and she will happily continue the Republican''s destruction of America when Grandpa McCain keels over shortly after election. As a Clinton supporter, I had briefly toyed with the idea of voting for McCain, but with his choice of VP running mate, he has ensured my vote will go to Obama.

How anyone can claim to be a Christian and yet sanction the killing of wolf cubs is beyond me. Also people who hunt for trophies, like bear-skin rugs, aren''t even humanity, they''re pond-scum at the bottom of the evolutionary scale.

Don''t vote for her strictly because she''s a woman. My wife is very supportive of promoting females in male dominated politics/business but she was appalled at Palin''s speech last night and is not voting for her. Use your head, not your gut, heart, or any other part of your anatomy to decide who to vote for.

I am a woman from NY State who has been a staunch supporter of Hillary Clinton from the time she first ran for Senate. If John McCain thinks he''s got my vote because he chose Palin as his running mate he''s sorely mistaken!! She''s the WRONG CHOICE as far as I''m concerned! She''s against women''s rights, which totally pisses me off, and against animal rights, which makes me think she''s a COLD HEARTED B---H!! The choices this year SUCK! I''m doing a write in vote and the name on the ballot will be that of HILLARY CLINTON! Someone in an earlier blog lumped Palin togther with Clinton. WAKE UP!!! THEY ARE WORLDS APART!!!

I had never heard of this woman before, but as soon as I heard Alaska running mate I knew that the Alaska wilderness is toast. after reading about her,I know that if elected that combo will rape every park and refuge. I am republican, sort of,and think they have stooped to even lower environmental levels, and have lost any respect I may have once held...oh, that doesn''t mean I am voting Democrat either....

Great post Cat Mommy from a Cat Daddy. One thing that I suggest you ponder before writing in Hillary; do you really think a woman such as her would have totally given up the ghost? I think she doesn''t want to be Veep with it''s "her irrelenvency" leanings, and she''s got a deal with Barack to get something much more in the limelight once he''s elected. (Sec. of State for example)?

Who wrote this speech? I read at least 3 copies of the speech from the Associated Press and other reliable sources and all of them have "new-clear plants" mentioned on page 3 of 5. I do not mean to be picky about the spelling but it is amazing that they could not get it right on at least one copy. I looked it up because I was upset that she would even mention nuclear plants as an option. I am a woman and I think she is the last person that I would want in the White House in any capacity.

It is exactly that mentality that has doomed many animals to extinction. Droids who have no feelings are what is destroying this planet,Each species plays a vital role in the survival of the eco-system and even, yes, humans. I will cry at the loss of any life thank you, It is what seperates me from my brother and sister animals. Compassion.

Well just hearing that "environmentallists" are unhappy with Governor Palin tells me she is on the right track.
"Environmentallists" care little about the environment; they just want it reserved for their own private gratification. If they cared at all, they would be up in arms about Brazil cutting down the amazon rain forests to grow sugar cane for ethanol, when there is plenty of good oil and gas in places like Alaska to not need to waste precious energy, and food producing lands on energy losing schems to try and "grow" so-called renewable fuels. Yes they are renewable; they just are not sustainable. We know exactly the rate of arrival of renewable "green" energy from the sun, and it simply is nowhere near fast enough to supply our needs.

Who says environmentalists don''t care about areas being deforested? I for one care very much about palm oil plantations destroying the only habitat of Oragatangs, hence putting them in line for extinction in the wild with in possibly 5 yrs. I also care about the mountain gorrillas battle for their homes due to the mining of a mineral which is used in cell phones. And I do not know of any environmentalists that are happy with Bio-fuel, unless they haven''t done their home work. The only way to keep our planet living is by education. The only gratifiaction I get, is waking up in the morning to the sounds of birds, not cars in a Walmart.I have been to the Amazon, it was beautiful, and for it to be deforrested not only hurts the beauty of the region, but also causes mass extinctions and land prone to flooding. Plus, deferrestation is a direct link to Global weather changes.

Palin: "She has defended Alaska''s right to shoot down wolves from the air to boost caribou and moose herds for hunters".

That alone makes me sick to my stomach. Lets misbalance nature so that we can shoot more animals. I can see hunting for food because it is needed or to reduce populations due to disease etc. But to hunt so you can have more of the preys food supply to hunt is just wrong.

You are right, we don''t understand that it is more important to hunt animals so that you can have more animals to hunt or to state that the sole purpose of such beautiful country is to drill and drain resources for a country that should instead look at their consumption habits. You are right, we dont understand what that is like. Dang good thing too. And I came from Idaho.

I was scared of McCain but I am absolutely terrified by this woman. She is Mike Huckabee on steroids. Her religious viewpoints should be enough to frighten anyone. These people like her are anxious for the world to end so their Jesus can come down and wisk them all to paradise. Somewhat like the suicide bombers without the 72 virgins. And she didn''t wait to start lying. If you watched her speach at the convention and really paid attention to her words, she lied a number of times. Had I been the least bit tempted to vote for McCain, her nomination is a deal breaker. In fact, there are times when you almost feel that SHE is the presidential candidate, not McCain.

Most concerning is she is a complete heretic to her claimed fundamental evangelical beliefs. Take her family for example, she couldn''t even discuss birth control or responsible *** to her teenage daughter, and she certainly is not giving her full time and attention to her new born.

Apparently her children are being raised by wolves and that must be why she is jealously supporting their slaughter.

No one should believe Alaska is full of conservationists - quite the opposite, Alaska has always been the target of exploitation, be it gold, timber, fish, big game, and now oil. The people there have become addicted to their yearly oil checks, which go to every man, woman and child in Alaska as payoffs from the oil industry. The people in Alaska tend to be self absorbed and resistant to rules, including laws. That''s why they hate the federal government and are almost all Republicans, they''re also nuts when it comes to religion, they have the most extreme churches you can imagine up there. This Palin woman is quite typical of the extremist head cases they have up there. Eight or nine kids is common up there, and everyone is running some kind of scam on the side. I know people are going to howl at this, but from what I''ve seen up there after several visits, its true.

Even after her outstanding speech at the convention, the democrat misogynists continue attacking Palin like rabid dogs with the same savagery they used on Hillary. As before, they are being supported 100% by the liberal media, led by msnbc with their chief woman-hater and tax cheat, the deeply disturbed Oedipus olbermann.

The loony-left has criticized Palin''s hair, her clothes, her glasses, her shoes, her choice of college, her children, and her husband. This slimebag behavior shows that the loony-left has NOTHING OF SUBSTANCE to OFFER - just smears and hysterical mud-slinging.

The "God D@#! America (and Women)" crowd is as pathetic as it gets.

Since the loony-left likes to focus on the candidate''s children, let''s do a comparison:

While Palin''s eldest son is serving his country in the military, Plagiarist-Joe''s son Hunter is serving himself at the government feeding trough - with daddy''s help!- as one of the sleaziest lobbyists in Washington.

Yep, the apple doesn''t fall far from the tree.

Lets face it, we need to worry about saving the humans, not saving the wolves. We have something like 500% more polar bears today than we did in the 70''s... Look it up and then challenge it. Don''t drill, but allow kids to starve? Of course, you realize the price of oil has global repercussions and kids are dying TODAY because of it. Not in ten years, today.
