A look at Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin's life and career

(CBS)  Levi Johnston is sure to draw plenty of media attention when he makes the scene at the Republican National Convention in St. Paul, Minn.

Johnston, 18, is the father of Bristol Palin's baby, Palin's family says.

According to the announcement, Bristol, the 17-year-old daughter of Alaska Governor and presumptive Republican Vice Presidential nominee Sarah Palin, is five-months pregnant.

The word sent shockwaves through the political scene.

Palin is scheduled to address the convention Wednesday night.

CBS News correspondent John Blackstone went to Johnston's hometown of Wasilla, Alaska, of which Palin was once mayor, to profile Johnston.

The high school hockey star's decision to join Bristol and her family at the convention was cheered by locals back home.

"More power to him for being there," said one.

"If he steps up and does the right thing and tries to stand by her, then good for him," said another.

"It sounds to me like at least he's sticking by her, and that's a good thing," said yet another.

When the Palins made the surprising announcement of the pregnancy, they said the young couple planned to wed.

Johnston's mother is quoted as saying this is no shotgun wedding -- that the two teens had plans to marry even before they knew Bristol was pregnant.

On his MySpace page, which has now been made private, Johnston reportedly said he's in a relationship, but didn't want to have kids.

His mother is also quoted as saying she was worried about her son handling the spotlight, noting, "It's difficult enough for teenagers to deal with any pregnancy, and having the entire nation watching makes it worse."

The New York Daily News sheds further light on Johnston.

As the News puts it, "On his MySpace page, Johnston proudly declares: 'I'm a f---in' redneck.'

'I live to play hockey. I like to go camping and hang out with the boys, do some fishing,' he says on the site.

He also warns that if anyone messes with him, 'I'll kick ass.'

The Web site, before it was removed, appeared not to have been accessed for a year.

On it, he admits to having a girlfriend.

On the part where it asks about children, he wrote, 'I don't want kids.' "

The News adds, "Mark Okeson, the assistant principal at Wasilla High School, told the Chicago Tribune that Bristol started her junior year last fall, in the town where Sarah Palin grew up.

He said Bristol inexplicably transferred to an Anchorage high school midyear, leaving Levi behind."

The pregnancy is hardly surprising. The rate of teen pregnancy among teens raised in evangelical families is substantially higher than in the general population. And remember, Palin is one of the last six Americans who thinks birth control is against god''s will. Looks like she got across to her kid.

Sarah Palin - Dan Quayle in a skirt. And do you notice how all the right-wingers with their pro-Palin talking points can''t even pronounce her NAME correctly? There''s Sean Hannity, almost saying she''s the best thing since sliced bread, and he cannot even pronounce her NAME correctly. Oh, yeah, she''s a big star in the Republican firmament, alright. You Republicans have watched her with amazement for YEARS (lol). And she is absolutely ready, with ZERO years of foreign policy experience, to be a cancer attack away from taking over for a senile dumb*ss who''s 72, has 1100 pages of medical records on various conditions, and who would be the oldest President in American History if, heaven forbid, he actually survives to be elected. And back to the Palins. Obama says their misadventures are off limits. But it''s NOT off limits to me: If all the sordid details on the Palins had come out, but she were a DEMOCRAT, the right-wingers would never let us hear the end of it. We''d never hear the end of chantss of "family values." And the lack of upright character by Palin and her familly IS relevant. It shows that John McCain is so desperate to have the power of the Presidency that he would pick someone, as his running mate, who has ZERO meaningful experience to be one cancer attack away from the Presidency. McCain''s choice of Sarah Palin for his prospective VP shows that John McCain lacks the JUDGMENT to be President.

The fact that CBS is attacking an 18 year old guy who is not even yet the son in law of Sarah Palin is illustrative of just how afraid the liberal media is of this woman. Two whole degrees of separation away from the actual candidate. . . . . wow.

We need to stop the proliferation of WELL MEANING BIGOTS (WMB''s). Well Meaning Bigot is defined as someone who, while not advocating violence, is still incapable of critical thought and suffers from the delusion that there is only one way to help a person improve their position in this world, and that is through increased government help/intervention/ interference in people''s lives.

The WMB''s are the ones who are angry with McCain and Palin. The attacks against Palin are nothing more than the most recent form of bigotry, unless the person can bring up a specific example of how she''s not qualified to be Vice President.

Executive experience, even at the state level, is more relevant. Hell, what was Bill Clinton''s foreign policy experience in 1992? He was up against a sitting Vice President! There are a huge number of factors that go into determining the quality, goodness and character of a candidate. It''s very simple: Obama is a product of far left radical, anti-American interests (Just google ACORN, Woods Foundation, etc.). McCain is a product of the American military experience and spent more time being tortured because he was a POW than Obama has spent in national politics.

Please help stop the proliferation of WMB''s!!

One final comment - when is America going to have a serious multi-party democracy instead of the ridiculous circus that you currently have - don''''t you ever feel embarrassed?

No, we feel proud of it.The US system was designed to be much more robust than the English system.

While the English system is respectable and not to be scorned it simply is too vulnerable to emotional or mob rule mistaken as Democratic process.

I am pleased you love your country and ways and admire the English past historical contributions to the great changes in government and freedom.

It is commendable you are proud of the socialist government your people have developed into. The proud freedom loving traditions of the English seem to have slowed the typical socialist decline into mediocrity, totalitarianism and tyranny of the masses.

God Save The Queen!

I''ll take a true American self-professed "redneck" over an American hating, Marxian poseur ANY day! After all, "redneck" simply means one is in touch with the outdoors and hard physical work - a pejorative ONLY in the snobbiest and elitest of circles.

Is it significant that Chelsea is an up-market, sophisticated area of London - and seems perfect for a Clinton child

Bristol, however, is a down-market, slightly battered city which has seen better days - remind you of someone?

I never realised Bristol was a girl''s name. Is this a new development in the US - to use British place names as personal names - what next, Liverpool Spiers? Cardiff Obama? Macclesfield Bush?

One final comment - when is America going to have a serious multi-party democracy instead of the ridiculous circus that you currently have - don''t you ever feel embarrassed?

It''s quite apparent that the left-wing liberal would rather have a bunch of fat, lazy, non-working, welfare sucking goofs on their side than honest, hard-working outdoors-type of people. After all how can they keep their voting base if people are not dependent on the liberals for their food, housing, income, etc..

My current son-in-law is a redneck. That is, he''s a hard working, outdoors loving, hunting and fishing fanatic who loves my daughter and takes good care of his children. My wife and I couldn''t be happier. He''s the backbone of this country and looks more like the folks that settled this great country than anyone you''ll see on the streets of New York.

The RNC was beyond pathetic! I watched for about 5 minutes, I turned the channel due to the massive BORDOM I experienced watching it all. I kinda feel sorry for them...on second thought....naw I don''t..lol. I wanted a chance to get an idea of who Palin was and I also wanted to get a look at the family, not because I really cared, my mind is already made up; but rather to stay informed. Upon carefull observation for a short period of time...it did''nt take long to decide how I feel about the McLame and Pittyfull Palin ticket. Did you see the daughter lick her hands then smooth the baby''s hair out with her spit! Yuck...or did you see the boyfriend making snide comments during the speech. I just did''nt like any of them from Palin, to the boyfriend, right on down to the daughter...so he calls himself a redneck? THEY ALL ARE SO; I''m thinking...I could''nt have said it better myself...rednecks to the T. Certainly not the type of trash we need at 1600 Penn Ave...AGAIN. I just wanted to make sure that my efforts of registering 36,000 new voters for Obama here in my state was the right decision

Is Obama gay?

What''s the story about him and Donald Young?
It sounds like this is a story that the Obama media stooges would rather not investigate.

Here is an absolute, devastating indictment of the Republican spin machine. This one piece illustrates how the far right can be on both sides of an issue depending on whether the individual in question is either Republican or Dem. We always talk about the astonishing hypocrisy, here it is and I challenge any McCain supporter to take a few short minutes and see exactly what we have been saying all along.

In there own words here is:

Karl Rove on VP qualifications

Oily Bill on teen pregnancy and Juno Palin

Hannity and D!ck Morris on sexism; no, I%u2019m not making this up

The face of evil, McCain%u2019s senior policy advisor on the %u2018gender card%u2019

And finally Sarah Palin in her own words

If this one clip were shown nationally as an ad for one week this election would be over, it is that devastating. A must see.

I can''t believe the ignorance of people who would judge someone based upon the contents of a myspace written at least a year ago by a 17 yr old boy. A "redneck" because he likes to hunt and fish and wasn''t planning a family yet. When my son was 17, he considered himself a "gangsta". After his urban phase, he went on to become an army soldier, with a laundry list of achievements and awards. We should all try to remember how silly we must have seemed when we were 17. The important thing is that the now 18 year old man is standing by this girl and facing adult responsibilities at a time when his life has just been put inside a fishbowl. Good luck and God bless them both.

Hey "karvictho". How do you know they did not try the contraceptive methods taught in school... AND IT FAILED.

Fact is, wheather you like to admit it or not. Abstinence is the only 100% effective method against unwanted pregnancies.
