(CBS)  As Hurricane Gustav prepared to strike the Gulf Coast, the Republican Party and the McCain campaign decided to curtail most of the planned activities of the first day of their convention in St. Paul, Minn. According to a new CBS News Poll, three-quarters of Americans approve of that decision.

Ten percent disapproved of the changes.

Americans also approve of President Bush’s handling of the response to Gustav, according to the poll. Fifty percent of Americans who know enough to say approve of Mr. Bush, compared to 19 percent who do not. However, 31 percent of those interviewed Monday and early Tuesday don’t know enough yet to say.

That’s in stark contrast with Katrina three years ago, when Mr. Bush received very low marks from the public for his handling of the disaster. In the weeks after Katrina hit in 2005, 58 percent of Americans disapproved of Mr. Bush’s handling of it, compared to 38 percent who approved.

The president’s overall job approval fell only a little immediately after Katrina - 41 percent approved, little changed from the 45 percent approval rating he enjoyed in July 2005. But it never rose above 42 percent again. Mr. Bush’s overall job approval stands at 28 percent now.

Overall, confidence in the federal government’s ability to respond to a natural disaster is higher than it was in the days after Katrina in 2005. In September 2005, 49 percent of Americans said they had not much or no confidence in the federal government’s ability to deal with disasters. Now, that number is down to 26 percent. Nineteen percent in the current poll said they had a great deal of confidence in the federal government, and 54 percent that had a fair amount. Comapre that to a similar 19 percent who said a great deal in 2005, and 32 percent who said a fair amount of confidence.

This poll was conducted among a random sample of 342 adults nationwide, interviewed by telephone September 1-2, 2008. Phone numbers were dialed from RDD samples of both standard land-lines and cell phones. The error due to sampling for results based on the entire sample could be plus or minus five percentage points. The error for subgroups is higher.

But...McCain voted AGAINST Katrina aid.

Now he stands at a podium with grave concern all over his face.

Sad and stupid.

Taxes will go up for the rich and the war profiteers.

And will hyper-inflation continue and even get worse for our fiat-currency without shoring up the "dollar" with taxes?

Well just look around, it''s already obvious.

Stop listening to Republicans on the economy, they know nothing, they''re idiots.

Officials of the Alaskan Independence Party say that Palin was once a member of their party, which since the 1970s has been pushing for a legal vote for Alaskans to decide whether or not residents of the 49th state can secede from the United States.

Lynette Clark, the chairman of the AIP, tells ABC News that Palin and her husband Todd were members in 1994, even attending the 1994 statewide convention in Wasilla. Clark was AIP secretary at the time.

AIP founcer, Joe Vogler man who said, "I''m an Alaskan, not an American. I''ve got no use for America or her damned institutions." This same man, AIP founder, also said, "The fires of Hell are glaciers compared to my hate for the American government."

I suspect McCain and his aides didn''t know about any of this. Indeed, they couldn''t have -- they didn''t vet her. But now that this revelation has come to light, what''s the defense?

This is just wishful thinking on your part. You don''t know people like you think you do. I believe McCain will carry 75 % of the states. You don''t hear the big majority talking or saying anything, but they are sitting back and when they get in that booth, they will be afraid of Obama. Also this woman VP candidate is very popular with the exception of you liberals that are shook up because she has been selected. All the criticism about her daughter is unbelievable, and most of us know what it is like to be kids and criticism of them is hypocrital.

Hardliners demand less government. It appears they disapproved the changes for the RNC.

The moderates felt that the President''s leadership is essential to recovering from an event resulting with declaration of a disaster qualifying for federal aid. It appears they approvered changes in the RNC plans.

Action speaks louder than words. Government will be there for its people, where it is needed and when it is needed. Neither hardliners, nor moderates can raise the approval ratings for past performance, only present and future performance.

After personally speaking to survivors and flying over the disaster area myself the same day of the levy breach, one thing was clear - without leadership responding and commiting to serving the needs of the victims, the desparation escalated to panic proportions quickly and couldn''t be reversed.

Now, for some reality - the levy broke on a clear day three days after the storm, which was perfect flying weather for the helicopters that effected the repairs. The biggest disaster was the perception, not the performance of the recovery team.

The media was grossly unfair to the perception and made it worse. I offer this proof - Mississsippi had far more damage from Katrina than New Orleans. The stench of dead animals and people could be smelled from an airplane flying 1,500 feet over the terrain. Many relief workers approached and left the area over the stench! None of that was broadcasted on CNN or FOX.

Well, that''s a change I can live with as well.

Maybe you all could stop dancing on the graves of American soldiers as well. No? Oh, well baby steps I guess. Can''t expect you to become human being overnight I suppose.

Plese, there is no comparison between Gustaf and Katrina.

Category 1 vs Category 5 storms but the GOP says they are equal, and because there''s no real damage in New Orleans, everything is now "RIGHT".

That would be similar to buying a Maybach 62S automobile, at 400,000 dollars, and dealer tries to give you a Yugo when you arrive to pick up your car. Both autos, but both worlds apart.

This was a no-brainer of a decision. It was obvious, especially given the Bush admin''s past record regarding Katrina.

What was not a good decision was McCain canceling on Larry King simply because CNN''s Campbell Brown pressed a McCain representative on air to provide examples of what foreign policy experience Sarah Palin had from being Gov of Alaska for 18 months. He never did answer the question and she kept asking, which is what she is supposed to do.

McCain looks petty and manipulative because of it.

Voltaire777 - don''t you find it amusing that the good citizens that stayed behind for Katrina declared war on each other.

Looted...

Shot at each other....

Resisted the attempts of others to help them.

Yet when the Red river overflowed its banks in Grand Forks, the people helped each other.

Gee - I wonder why ?

You have to be able to help people and not want something back in return. And not want to be a hero. Disasters leave people in desperate need of help.. help that won''t be rewarded. Gustav category 1

Bush managed to handle Gustav, well of course he did, it was 20% of Katrina and they had the abject failure of Katrina to learn from. What did you expect?

I know Bush is an idiot but Jeez, he can walk and talk, that was all expected from him.

"Bush Higher Marks For Handling Gustav Compared To Katrina"

Yes, COMPARED TO KATRINA, Bush did a heck of a job! When Katrina hit, Bush did NOTHING! We lost a major US city! Afterwards, Bush gave out no-bid contracts to the chosen few to rebuild... nice new mansions for his wealthy buddies! (and screw the rest of the people!)

So, this time, when the hurricane sputtered out, barely doing any damage, Bush has done a "better" job?

Bush is a MISERABLE FAILURE.

Vote for McCain/Palin if you want more of the same: lower standard of living for all but a few, jobs exported to third-world countries, the economy in shambles, privacy rights eliminated, free speech relegated to little fenced in areas underground, endless wars for oil, the president morphed into a king, the US Constitution in tatters.
