(AP)  A man accused of shooting at a traffic light was arrested near the University of California at Los Angeles with five loaded semiautomatic pistols and thousands of rounds of ammunition in his possession, police said.

Gene Bush, 52, was being held Monday at a county jail and was expected to make an initial court appearance Tuesday.

He was arrested late Friday by campus police after he allegedly shot at a traffic light a block away from the university. Police searched him, his van and a storage unit, finding weapons, ammunition and what police called an anti-government manifesto.

"Given the situation, with the amount of guns and ammunition involved, we thought it best that he remain in custody until we know the full story behind him," said UCLA police Sgt. Phil Baguiao. "We would consider him a danger to society given the circumstances."

Police said officers found Bush carrying the pistols - which were equipped with laser sights - and 400 bullets. They also found another 7,800 rounds of ammunition in his van and 3,000 more in his storage locker, police said.

A press release said Bush appeared to have no criminal history and was living out of his van.

After his arrest, Bush made anti-government statements and told police to look in his nearby suitcase for "the secret," the release said. A Los Angeles police bomb squad found timers, paint thinner and other suspicious items inside, as well as his manifesto.

UCLA police spokeswoman Nancy Greenstein said police believe Bush was acting alone and didn't have a specific target. "He had writings and a lot of them seemed to be anti-government, talk about 9/11," she said.

It wasn't immediately clear why police didn't announce Bush's arrest until Monday, more than three days after the incident. It wasn't known if Bush had retained an attorney.

Oh please. This is such a non-news story. this is LA we''re talking about. There are large sections of the city where the average resident carries 7 assault rifles, 3 dozen pistols, and enough ammo to be his own armory to defend his 50 kilos crack/cocaine.

"five semiautomatic pistols" & "11,000 rounds"?

Is that all? That''s nothing. Half the population of the USA is walking around with that.

You call this a news story? YAWN.

I don''t think his name got a thing to do with it. He just wanted to be a bad arse. What the the hell was he doing a ton of fire power..that makes no sence. Why the traffic computised lights..Any person knows the lights can''t do any thing but tell people when/not to do..If anything that pisses me is when drivers run the walk signs when it is walk. I am not pissed at the car but its driver.. I am not pissed at the cell phone but the rude person. So as nice as the ASAs are, people get pissed at them..Yes I do tell them is well yer know shut the pie hole..at that mage he knew better..I will turn 54 this month and really that right to bear arms is so abused. The bloody fool did not need that much fire power. Every day there is a shooting over the dumbest stuff. Are the parents teaching their kids the values of right from wrong..The rage is worse today. Everyday they shoot some body/ies,,Being a hot headed ang killing is not right. If the man wants to hate America fine but don''t go firing guns etc to hurt others. It don''t help plus they did not hurt yr.

He had done more damage,, Back to this man..he had to know he be hurting himself by that behaviour. wWas TV his baby sitter growing up. The lights did not do any thing to to **** him as they are things. I hate them ASAs..Yep we all talk to them and they are a cumputer..I do get pissed at them..So I try to answer the poor thing''s ?s but it don''t get it...Gene was pissed and why did he snap had he gone home and mined his business he be free. Tennessee Volunteer fan, no doubt. All that ammunition was for celebration. Good thing they lost.

Nancy,
Vol fans prefer shotguns and we don''t waste ammo celebrating. We prefer beer. Kudos to the Bruins for a well played game. They showed great heart in the comeback last night.

now there is obviously something wrong w/ this guy, but i don''t like the emphasis the article has about his anti-gov''t statements, because who of this country that is actually paying attention and not being misled by republican propoganda isn''t saying anti-gov''t statements.....

Given the limited information and flattering photograph of this guy, he does seem to be a bit off, and I would also want to know a bit more before sending him on his way, although I would not be too surprised to hear he really is nuts. If he is shooting at traffic lights in Westwood, he definitely has a problem.

However, I would like to know a few more details before jumping to conclusions. The article mentions five loaded semiautomatic pistols. First, I have to wonder if this really means what it sounds like, or is it the LAPD version of loaded, which could mean that there was ammunition anywhere in the proximity of the weapon. That is comparable to the Washington, DC, version of %u201Cmachine gun%u201D, which they define as any weapon capable of holding twelve or more rounds of ammunition.

If he is living in his van, his vehicle obviously does not have a trunk in which to lock a weapon. I would guess that he was living somewhere else before that, and was sent packing for reasons yet unknown. Where else should he have kept these weapons?

Also mentioned is an anti-government manifesto. Are they referring to Newsweek, Rolling Stone, or the LA Times?

It is always enlightening to see half of a story reported, and which half it generally is.

That''''s because the NRA spends all of its time trying to make EVERY POSSIBLE USE of firearms LEGAL! See? They are so impressed with the "logic" (and I use that word loosely here) of "if guns are outlawed, only outlaws will have guns" that they want to make sure that ANYTHING and EVERYTHING you can do with a gun is LEGAL. The situation is already so ins.anely bad that they have all convinced themselves that ANYTIME they "feel threatened", they have the "right" to "defend themselves" by killing the person or persons they think are threatening them! Since NRA members, by and large, are ALL IN.SANE, you should be able to understand that this "logic" leads to chaos, anarchy, and death on a massive scale... The NRA wants nothing less than the complete annihilation of civilization!
======
I was a member of the NRA, and my shrink says I''m perfectly sane. :)

Can you do me a favor please? Show me on the NRA''s website or pamphlets, where they want EVERYTHING legalized. Don''t show me the "Handgun Control" ''s information-- it has to come from the NRA. If you can''t, then you''re talking out your a**.

Have a nice day:)
Patrick.
