Boehner: Convention Plans Will Be Made "day By Day"

By Daniel W. Reilly

(The Politico)  ST. PAUL- House Minority Leader John Boehner told reporters Sunday afternoon that all plans for the Republican convention will be made on a “day by day basis,” as Hurricane Gustav continues to threaten the Gulf Coast.

The chairman of the convention, Boehner briefed reporters after a meeting with convention staff and representatives from Sen. John McCain’s campaign.

Boehner said the entire schedule for the week was still in flux, but said it was “doubtful” that there will be any type of formal program Monday night, except for consideration of the rules and the platform of the convention.

President Bush and Vice President Cheney have already cancelled their appearances in St. Paul, along with numerous other GOP lawmakers.

While Boehner said there was a chance McCain would not attend the convention depending on events on the ground, he dismissed reports that the Arizona senator has already cancelled as “nonsense.”

He also urged all delegates and convention attendees to do their part to aid the relief effort.

“There will be a significant fundraising drive to help the charities stretched thin as a result of [the Hurricane],” Boehner said.

Convention officials were expected to hold a press briefing at 3 pm Central Time Sunday afternoon.
