  • Photo Essay Sarah Palin

Alaska's youngest and first female governor tabbed to be McCain's running mate.

(CBS)  CBS News senior political correspondent Jeff Greenfield takes a look at the pros and cons of this bold, maybe risky pick of relatively unknown Sarah Palin - one that suggests the McCain camp felt the Democrats pulled off a successful convention that required a "gee whiz" move.

Pro: She's a woman. You probably noticed that. It could be a way to draw disaffected Democrats and independents who felt Clinton was victimized by gender bias.

Con: But if it's seen as an "affirmative action pick" - one made mostly because she is a woman - that might not be the way into those white working-class men.

Pro: A fresh start. As a Republican who's fought her own party's establishment in Alaska, she underlines McCain's "maverick" image, and implies a break with the Republican Party, whose brand is badly tarnished.

Con: That experience issue you heard about may kick up the "age" issue. Can you put someone with no connection with the wider world a "heartbeat away" from the Oval Office with a 72-year-old president?

Pro: She delights the right. The evangelical community sees her as a heroine - she's one herself, and that helps McCain with part of the GOP base who have had a testy relationship with her.

Con: I's her first time in the ring, unlike McCain, Biden, and Obama. Can she handle the frenzy of intense media scrutiny - answer questions about, say, international conflicts.

One other key here: She's the mother of a Down Syndrome child, one of four million American children with disabilities. For millions of parents, and relatives of such children, the idea of someone in the councils of power who really understands their needs could be an "x" factor in this campaign we simply don't know how to measure.

Obama, made a major political mistake on not getting Hillary. Period!

McCain helped his campaign by picking another maverick and female who can stand up to anyone. A new inspiring pick the republicans need. She has 80 percent approval in Alaska. She taxed oil companies and gave it all back to tax payers at $1,200 each.

Obama is a smart inspiring speaker, but Palin''s actions speak louder than political words. She has fought corruption in both parties in Alaska. When she speaks she says it like it is, unlike polished career politicians. Some people can talk the talk, but Palin can walk the walk.

Now the race is exciting! History will be made period with either Obama or McCain!

Response to Raflin: What world are you living in?? You state "most of America is laughing" in your post. People like me -- independent, undecided voters -- are not laughing at all. We are excited and energized by this choice of VP candidate. Mother of 5, parent of a special needs child, the only of the four candidates with executive experience (Governer), a proven reformist, and clear blue-collar roots with a fisherman husband and union memberships. This adds-up to a dream candidate for the ticket without ambiguity. The fact that she''s easy on the eyes on camera is a bonus point not a problem as you suggest in your post. If you feel this choice is laughable, then please know much of the laughter is not snickering but glee from independents like me whom both parties are trying to attract in this tight race.

SARAH PALIN IS MORE THAN JUST ANOTHER STATE GOVERNOR. She shook up Alaska to its roots.

McCain has made a bold and telling move selecting someone with Chief Executive experience %u2013 the only one to have any, of the four running for the White House.

Discussing the war on the Glenn Beck show, she stated that "We''re fighting in some sense over energy supplies." I just don''t see why our soldiers should be dying for that reason. If we were in Iraq to find weapons of mass destruction, then fine. If we%u2019re there to root out terrorists, then fine. In fact, as long as we%u2019re fighting to protect American lives, then I can understand her support for the war. But how can she say that the war is about oil and still approve of us having sent thousands of America%u2019s young men and women to die in Iraq? Keeping the price of gasoline down by a few cents isn%u2019t worth a single American soldier%u2019s life. It simply doesn%u2019t make sense to (1) believe that we%u2019re fighting for oil, and (2) still support the war.

For anyone who would like to hear the above quote in context, the interview is available on YouTube and the relevant bit is at exactly the eight-minute mark.

I think McCain has taken this pick to show just how stupid he thinks the country really is. He did it for his own perverted enjoyment so he can laugh at all you idiots that will vote for him because she''s a woman and good looking. And he want''s to drill in Anwar so bad the oil companies probably have her in their pockets too. This is an oil company pick and McCain''s last hope to get Hillary''s vote. He knows he''s in trouble. This was a desparate move, and a bad one. People don''t want her for President or Vice President, they wanted the Clintons. And what''s going to happen if McCain dies. He''ll be almost 80 before he finishes his first term. How much longer do you think he has? That''s all we need a senile, old man a pretty looking woman that has no idea what she would be doing. LOL :) I think McCain is giving up. He doesn''t want to be president, he wants Barack too. This is a forfeit move.

Wow,
Senator Obama''s great political fortunes return as once again during this election his opponent turns out to be a nincompoop. Senator McCain shows his political prowess is equivalent to that of Allan Keys -remember him, the non-Illinois token minority freak show the Republican Party sent to prevent Obama%u2019s election to the Senate. And now McCain picks a token female to woo disgruntled Clinton supporters, revealing just how stupid and superficial he and other Republicans think those supporters are -somewhere George Carlin is begging to be brought back to life to tell just a few more jokes. Yes, she%u2019s been a governor and mayor of the least-populated state -smaller than most US cities- and a tiny town, -I think they now have a stoplight though -and she%u2019s a moose hunter, a sports reporter and a beauty queen. A lifetime member of the NRA and chair of the Interstate Oil and Gas Compact Commission -Cheney approves. A BS in journalism-communication from Idaho -very prestigious; clearly no other education is required. Fully qualified, you betcha; to ruin Republican chances to keep the Presidency. She makes me yearn for Dan Quayle! Senator Joe Biden vs. Governor Sarah Palin, there%u2019s a wartime VP debate for the century. President-Elect Obama might as well start selecting his Cabinet%u2026Ding-dong, hello Mrs. Bush, I%u2019m Michelle Obama, would you mind if I came in to measure the drapes, thanks.

Do not be fooled by crusty old republican white guys, dialing in on their modems, who say they were Hilary supporters and will now vote for the lipstick (Palin) that Karl Rove put on the pig (McCain)! They''re tryin'' to pull one over on you. Hilary supporters with brains wanted Hilary because she is intelligent, etc. A beauty pageant contestant with only an undergrad journalism degree (!) from Idaho holds no candle to someone as intelligent and well-educated as Hilary! Again, Karl Rove put lipstick on a pig! End of story.

Todd, can you not read? The sentence says that crusty old guys are writing in posing as Hilary supporters; and reference to those crusty old guys ("they") does not constitute a reference Palin, obviously. Take some reading classes bud.

She is an anti-choice evangelical who wants to teach creationism to our children - which of Hillary''s true supporters is going to be swayed by her? None!!! only the fakes managed by the Rove people. The Palin choice is a desperate move by the McCain handlers- you can be sure that the Rove team made the choice since McCain barely knows her. With her lightweight resume: beauty queen, sport fishing , snowmobile rentals, and 2 years governorship of an idiosyncratic state with a very small population. They haven''t even fully vetted her since she is caught up in a local scandal- WootenGate in Alaska. After all the hot air emitted by the McCain/Rove team about Obama''s lack of experience they look even more hypocritical than ever. This is a ploy that will come back to bite them - only hard-core conservatives will buy into it. Who could want this person, as nice as she may be, to be a heart beat away from the presidency given McCain''s age and health history. This is a gift the Obama/Biden campaign. The neocons self-destruct yet again!!! Thanks John.

Neither McCain nor Palin are reformers. (No mainstream politician actually is, including Obama.) She has several formal and informal ethics inquiries ongoing. She has no business in the governor''s office because of her conflict of interest: Her bub is an exec. for BP. (Or alternatively, he should get into a new line of work.) And the Obama campaign did NOT "attack" her, which implies the type of ad hominem nonsense John McCain''s been using against Obama, only disgracing himself. The Obama campaign released public information that the voters in the lower 48 wouldn''t otherwise know. We need to know about the ethics issues for both campaigns. That is NOT attacking, that is campaigning. Oh, and by the way, Katrina made landfall in MS as a CATEGORY FIVE, not a Category Three. She was a FOUR when she hit coastal LA because she went back into the Gulf briefly before making landfall a second time, long enough to pick up more steam. She actually dropped to a Three near New Orleans, which of course was devastated more by the levies failing the night after the storm. It would be nice if you people could make at least an effort at research and journalism, even if it''s just a facade. You are not even trying!

Clinton''s hysterical followers aren''t gonna go for an anti-abortion beauty queen if that''s what you were thinking. Could you have possibly picked a LESS qualified candidate?!!! Are you trying to compete with Barry? WHY NOT HUCKABEE OR ROMNEY? This is the last straw McCain! BARR ''08!!! Apparently he''s a REAL CONSERVATIVE, not some flip flopping back stabbing closet liberal who thinks with his little head.

McCain just blew his own argument against Obama...not enough experience to lead. Apparently, according to McCain, experience is not important after all. So far, all McCain has proven is that his ticket has less experience than the Dem ticket AND that he lacks sound judgment as well.

This is a knee-jerk reaction selection by McCain and his puppet masters. If he can''t make a sound, measured decision on selecting a running mate, what kind of response can we expect with his finger on the button (for more war, Iran maybe)?

How can any American back the GOP ticket with such a poor choice of candidates?

This woman has been the governor of a state with a population of what? 650k? I am in a tier "B" city and our metro area alone has twice that. she has done that for what? under 2 years? McCain is out of his mind. This just proves what have suspected all along. He is losing it quickly. Imagine what he will be like in a year or two.

Two senior Republican officials close to Mitt Romney and Tim
Pawlenty said they had both been rudely strung along and now "feel manipulated."

"They now know that they were used as decoys, well after McCain had decided not to pick them," one Republican involved in the process said.

Alaska - population 670,000. Hong Kong - population six and a half million. London - population eight million. HK''s Chief Executive Donald Tsang, and London''s mayor Boris Johnson have both been responsible to more people than this woman. Far right Republicans think disgruntled Democratic women are so dumb they''d vote for Anne Coulter if she was on the Republican ticket, so they have given us Charlton Heston in a dress. Another sign of how out of touch the far right of the Republican party is. It''s sad. Because it would have been to all our benefit for there to be a close race in November. McCain has thrown in his cards.

The Republicans AND McCain play the RACE CARD.

Yet another story CBS did not cover.

See http://abcnews.go.com/Video/playerIndex?id=5678062

McCain and the Republicans are finally out of the closet. They sell fake dollar bills with Obama''s picture -- their own version of the RACE CARD. While the local Republican Chariman says it has stopped and will not happen again; SHE ALSO SAYS NO ONE WILL BE PUNISHED (in another report). Sounds like Republicans condone the action while also seeking cover to me.

Did he even run this pick by any of his advisors? Surely somebody told him it was a terrible idea. This Hillary supporter just made up her mind and became a firm Obama supporter.

Deciding to give life to a Down4s child is wonderful. But it carries with it an added responsibility. This child needs its mother. Not a nanny, not a grandmother or only a father - Ms. Palin made this decision and she should STAY HOME and take care of this child full-time. Not take on even more outside distractions and duties - Vice President? Insanity. Come on you evangelical Mommies! Get off the pot! What would YOU do with a child like this? Aspire to one of the highest offices of the land? I don4t see her as any sort of a hero. Follow through with the responsibility you have, Mr. Palin, and take care of this child like it deserves to be taken care of. You have a tough enough life ahead of you with the everyday challenges which you will be faced with. Do this - renounce your big-wig jobs - then I will call you a hero. Not by your giving in to the lures of a political ego-trip.

24 hours after the selection of Sarah Palin, I''m still good with this decision. All of you who criticize her for not "staying home" with her children are sexist. Barack Obama has children at home too. Why aren''t you criticizing him for being away from his children so much? All of you who criticize John McCain for selecting her because of her "light" experience should look in the mirror, for you who voted for Obama selected a person even less experienced than Sarah Palin. Sarah Palin''s incredible strength of character will show over the next two months. McCain/Palin have my vote.

Is governor Palin qualified to be Vice-President? Answer, under the law, yes. She is a citizen and of the legal age. Then the question besomes: is she qualified based on Temperment, Accomplishment, and Experience? The answer has to be another question. Compared to whom?

"I would rather lose an election than lose a war."

Hmmm. Is she really the most qualified person that would take over for a man that would be 77 during his first term? I was a Hillary supporter (a regular one, not the nut jobs with the crazy eyes), and I was upset that Obama kept getting so lucky during the primaries. Now, I am ecstatic that he got so lucky. McCainiacs - you get an "A" for blind optimism and an "F" for substance. You%u2019ve been watching Hannity again, who is an idiot, and his audience has proven to be among TV''s most ignorant. This woman - a governor of a state with a whopping 600K citizens that is floating on oil has - in her barely 2 years in office - had to deal with only one crisis...Getting an honest state employee to fire a state trooper because he happened to be divorcing the Governors sister - now that%u2019s great Republican experience - worthy of Monica Goodling - though at least she had a phony law degree! Do you really think McCain would have picked her if she was a man? All the Republican hypocrisy over affirmative action and McCain passes over many more imminently qualified men and women to pick a NRA-loving pro-life, nobody. That%u2019s judgment we can trust (to ruin our country)!
McCainiacs - your knowledge of history - Zilch. Obama has equivalent experience to Abraham Lincoln, John F. Kennedy, Harry S. Truman, Theodore Roosevelt, shall I continue? I guess this token, unqualified, uneducated, affirmative-action-for-political-expediency McCain-pick does have Biden and Obama on one bit of experience; they%u2019ve never won a swimsuit competition...

She''s more conservative and pro oil than *** Cheney.
She''s more anti-abortion than Mike Huckabee
She''s more ultra-religious than most televangelists
She''s a firm believer in Creationism, hates those who teach evolution.
She''s about to be indicted for firing a State Commissioner who refused to fire her ex-brother in-law Mike Wooten.
She''s pro drilling off shore
She called the Exxon Valdez accident a minor mistake, with no long term effects
She thinks global warming does not exist.
She was a mayor of town for 8000 for one term, then governor of ALASKA for little more than a year.
She''s a trophy Veep

McCainiacs- Yes running a REAL state is a challenge, especially if you''ve done it at least two years (she hasn%u2019t yet). Alaska has only 600K citizens, and that%u2019s only during the summer. This right-wing-nut has neither the education nor the experience to be competitive for selection as a Whitehouse Intern, much less a senior and permanent member of the National Security Council. McCainiacs - Wasn''t it your God people who were praying for it to rain in Denver last week...and now they have their answer - Katrina''s big brother Gustav is bearing down the same way during your Republican sham convention? How is it that the religious in Europe seek greater social services to protect the children that ARE born and the "religious" in your party only seek to protect them to birth and could give a crud beyond the womb? The tale of the tape -- experience

Obama 3 years federal experience, 8 years state level experience, 12 years teaching Constitutional Law, 7 years a Lawyer.

Palin 0 years federal experience, 2 years state level experience, 14 years local experience and a degree in Journalism.

Obama appears to be the clear winner. Factor in the number of Court losses for the Bush Administration including the possible release of Gitmo terrorists into the US and a president that knows the constitution does not sound bad either.

Actions

A governor that resorts to legally questionable actions to protect a single individual is failing to protect all persons in their state by making appropriate changes either administratively or in conjunction with the legislature. I would consider that an example of unsuitable experience because of poor judgment.

A governor that encourages use of an opportune political environment to push an earmark for a bridge to nowhere does not get credit for experience as a reformer later when that governor cancels the project. An experienced reformer blocks the action before the scandal not after the uproar occurs.

It is disappointing that both of these examples are applicable to Gov. Palin.

The idea that Hillary voters would flock to Sarah Palin is a amazingly insuulting. Many Hillary supporters were drawn to a strong woman who supports freedom and the idea of being a good steward to the Earth, while Palin''s church teaches women should be subservient to men and wish to ban the pill, and Palin herself thinks Creationism should be taught in science class, and doesn''t believe the science behind climate change.
