Police found Ebony Garcia, 21, lying in a pool of blood at about 2:10 a.m Saturday. She was stabbed about a dozen times and died two hours later at a local hospital.
Witnesses say neighbors ignored the woman's screams for more than 30 minutes before someone called the police. One neighbor said she ignored the cries because she thought the victim had been drinking.
"She was screaming, 'Help, help, he stabbed me on the neck, I'm bleeding from the neck," the neighbor told the New York Daily News.
A police source told the newspaper that Garcia had been out drinking at a local bar when she ran into her ex-boyfriend, Segundo Penafiel, 25, against whom she had obtained a restraining order.
"She was in a bad situation. She was a young girl, a good girl," the victim's cousin told the Daily News.
Garcia was the mother of a 2-year-old daughter, the newspaper reports.

- Since polls indicate that 95% of Americans claim they believe in God, clearly secularism is NOT the problem. It seems more reasonable to conclude that somehow religion has failed to install a viable conscience in the people who ignored this woman''''s cries. Perhaps they were claiming "it must be God''''''''s will that she die". A pathetic excuse.

- Get on your ominipresent cellphones & call the police. How tough is that to do?
Look out for your ex-boyfriends & your ex-husbands. They always get murdered AFTER they have taken out the restraining order.
Stop quoting the bible here, people. I''m sick of it. This isn''t the 700 Club. You want to do that then go to church. - Reply to this comment
- What they say about people in NYC minding their own business is TRUE!I alway''s thought this was just a saying until I visited the Big Apple while I was on leave from the military.I have seen people stepping over a dead guy in the subway,I watched my wrist watch,it took 37 min.before someone actually stopped too see if he was gone(that isn''t counting me,I checked for signs of life)He was already purple and rigor was present,I am a medic so I know. But ignoring screams that is a whole new ball game.

- I think it''s disgusting for people to be in their homes and hear someone screaming and let it go on. No one got up to look and that woman was screaming for a half an hour? If I were in her family I would press charges against the whole block. That is absolutely horrible. Now a little girl has to grow up without her mother. It''s people like the people in that neighborhood that is making this world into a cold place. The first sound of something out of the ordinary and I look out to check. I live on a quiet street so thank God I haven''t had to called the police but I''ve been in neighborhoods where I had to call the police for people. It''s a scary thought to think an entire neighborhood ignored her. God forbid I''m never in that situation in that neighborhood.

- The indifference towards others that this shows can only get worse with the ascendancy of secularism in America.

- When i lived in California, i heard a woman scream one morning, wernt outside, didn''t see anything so went back in and called 911. The police showed up and caught a man raping a woman in a car. It isn''t like you have to be a hero to help someone.

- Its so sad that cry for help went unlistened to.And yet in the bible it talks about the good samaritan, who after, the man was attacted by thieves and nearly beaten to death ,one kind man took pity and saved the man and took him into his home to feed him ,and care for him.what has happened to our society.love and compassion is for all of us.i am appalled at the lack of both in this situation.after all it could have been them too,or their children or family.

- Been thinking about this story some today. I''m very thankful to not live in NYC. Usually if someone screams in my neck of the woods,....it''s from maybe burning their pie in the oven, or the chickens got out and uhm, checked out the wife''s flower bed. My wife''s a real sweetheart, except when that happens from me not latching the door. I will say I learned that a chicken will actually ricochet off the wall from the kinetic energy transferred from a good kick. Bet that hen hated my guts for that :(
