Tom Hanks' Son Stars In New Comedy "The House Bunny"

(CBS)  When it comes to comedy, actor Tom Hanks has passed the torch to his son Colin.

Colin Hanks is stepping out of his father's shadow and is co-starring in the new comedy "The House Bunny" alongside actress Anna Faris.

Hanks sat down with Early Show co-anchor Julie Chen to discuss his new role and being the son of Tom Hanks.

"I think that maybe some of it is genetic, but I also think some of it is really pretty dependent on the environment that you're raised in," Hanks said. "If everyone is cracking jokes and you're always wanting to crack the bigger and better joke and get the bigger and better laugh."

In "The House Bunny," Hanks plays the love interest of Shelly (Faris), a former Playboy Bunny who gets kicked out of the Playboy Mansion and joins a sorority.

"As a former Playboy Bunny, she feels that she needs to study up and try to impress me because surely someone like me who wears a jacket must be smart."

Like in real life, Anna's character has "a heart of gold."

"To my understanding Anna created the character and it was sort of her child and she got it going. Then I got this call saying 'Hey would you like to be part of this' and because I find her to be so talented, I said sure I would love to, that would be great," he said.

Although Hanks has never had the pleasure of attending a party at the Playboy Mansion, he has briefly met the legendary Hugh Hefner.

"I know that after the premiere the party is there (at the Playboy Mansion). So, never in my life have I gotten more calls from my friends asking if they can go to the post party. 'I don't want tickets to the premiere, I just want to go to the party,'" Hanks said.

In a couple of days, Hanks will be chatting it up with Hefner and his Playboy Bunnies.

"Yes, if I can get away from the monkey cages, then yes I will," he said.

According to Hanks, there was a lot of waiting around on the set of "The House Bunny."

After spending 20 minutes in the hair and make-up chair himself, Hanks had to wait for almost two hours for all of the eight actresses who had to get primped in hair and make-up and wardrobe for their scenes.

And Hanks will find himself in the hair and make-up chair again soon.

He is taking on another acting endeavor on the TV side and will appear in three episodes of "Mad Men."

"It’s very exciting. I'm playing a priest, which is a great challenge," he said. "I am a huge fan of the show. I kind of talked my way onto the show."

Whether it be Playboy or priesthood, Hanks is proving that he can swing big screen and TV gigs, just like his dad.

I love Tom Hanks, in my opinion he is one of the greatest actors! I hope Colin Hanks turns out to be just like his father if not better.
