Afghan officials said at least 13 militants died in the attack, including six suicide bombers. NATO offered a slightly different account, saying three suicide bombers detonated their vests and three more were shot dead. NATO said seven attackers in total were killed.
The militants failed to gain entry to Camp Salerno in Khost city after launching waves of attacks just before midnight on Monday, said Arsallah Jamal, the governor of Khost. The base is just a few miles away from Pakistan's border.
The attack came one day after a suicide bomber outside the same base killed 10 civilians and wounded 13 others.
Soldiers on the ground, fighter aircraft and helicopters were chasing the retreating militants. NATO said its forces identified the attackers about 1,000 yards outside of the base perimeter and launched helicopter gunships.
Gen. Mohammad Zahir Azimi, the Afghan Defense Ministry spokesman, said Afghan soldiers, aided by U.S. troops, chased and surrounded a group of insurgents, and six militants in suicide vests blew themselves up when cornered. Seven other militants died in those explosions and a rolling gun battle, he said.
"(The Afghan National Army) is saying that anytime we get close to them, they detonate themselves," Jamal said.
The Taliban appeared to confirm that account. Zabiullah Mujahid, a Taliban spokesman, said the militants dispatched 15 militants for the attack on Salerno, and seven blew themselves up and eight returned to a Taliban safe-house.
Jamal said the bodies of at least two dead militants were outside the checkpoint leading to the base's airport, both of whom had suicide vests on. It wasn't clear if those militants were among the dead in Azimi's count.
Two Afghan civilians also died in the fighting, Jamal said.
Militants have long targeted U.S. bases with suicide bombers, but coordinated attacks on such a major base are rare.

Taliban spokesman Zabiullah Mujahid claimed a group of 15 suicide bombers entered the base and killed and wounded a large number of soldiers.
%u201CFifteen of our mujahideen, all equipped with light and heavy weapons, entered the military base and attacked several compounds inside the base, where the foreign forces were staying,%u201D Mujahid said in a statement posted at a Taliban website.
You know, their versions of events usually check out, whereas George-mission-accomplished-Bush has been known to tell a porky or two.

Yeah, they were laying around the pool drinking cool drinks before we came along. Iraq you could make a claim to unjust invasion. Afhganistan is a differnt situation. You have a KNOWN nuclear capable unstable country next door with the same religious group in both countries trying to gain power. They are not stupid, losers or crazy. They believe their religiuos leaders as much as Christians believe their ministers here. They live and believe something that is foreign to westerners, but not unprecedented. The Japanese had similar beliefs during WWII, and it took 2 nuclear bombs and total occupation to stop that threat.

So where was the invasion, OR EVEN CRITICISM, of Saudi Arabia since almost all of the 9/11 hijackers were Saudis?? Congratulations on being able to type whilst still in your vegetative state.
Some people just don''t get it.. Of course they are Obama voters all three of them..

THAT was related to Oil and I agree with you, that should have been addressed. But, always remember, follow the money and that will tell you the answer.
You can not possibly be that ignorant to think that the US invaded Afghanistan for oil. Afghanistan actually imports oil. Also NATO was not part of the invasion of Afghanistan. They came in much later when the country was in US control.
To see the Neo-Coms rejoicing in the misery of these people is really pathetic.

This conservative believes it is sad too. Those that strap on suicide vests are indeed without hope and misguided. I blame their own government who looks the other way, their religion that glorifies jihad. It is not the U.S. that is training and brainwashing these people, and to suggest we are taking advantage is silly. It is the one''s sitting in their safe houses that send them on their death errands that hold responsibility and no one else.
Also, greed of the U.S.? What would we gain from Afghanistan or Pakistan? Nothing, we don''t want to be there and are forced to because their governments will do nothing (mainly Pakistan) to abolish the Taliban and radical islam which is gunning for us, not the other way around. Remember 9/11, it was hatched and supported in this very area by the Taliban.
Why would you think that because many of the 911 attackers were Saudi citizens the US would invade Saudi? The planning took place in multiple countries with the help of individuals of many different nationalities. The leadership was located in Afghanistan and that is why Afghanistan was the target.

True, but dig around a little and you might find a vitally strategic pipeline or two. Dig around a little more, and you might find from years ago the arranging of that huge money-maker from a couple of todays players. I''ll give you a clue - dubyas dad and todays president of Afghanistan.
I have no idea what you are trying to get at in your second statement. You used the word "might" again. If you are talking about Karzai being chosen by the US you are correct, but what money makers are you talking about. Afghanistan has no money makers other than drug trade.

I''d call this just digging around to heap more blame on the Bush''s. If it was so strategic we would have heard about how the Taliban was going to exploit it. When the Taliban took over, the world watched the chaos they brought to the people of Afghanistan. The U.S. did not step in, they didn''t want to go there. So much for being strategic. Even Clinton''s concern was the Taliban and OBL when he lobbed a few missiles at their camps, not a word was mentioned about a pipeline.
Some people just don''''t get it.. Of course they are Obama voters all three of them..

So how many dead American troops will satisfy your need to get Bin Laden (who is either in Pakistan or dead)? Just like Iraq - it is time to bring our troops home.
How much money does the US plan to spend in Afghanistan? What is the end-state?
Seriously think about the similarities to Iraq?
Ol Scooter Libby was trying to cover ppl up by outing agents whose inspector/diplomat husbands said there were no WMD''''s or evidence of it in his investigation. Ol Bushy commuted his sentence because he was acting on Bush''''s behalf.
BS like this is the tip of the iceberg. Yes I would be ok with more of a war in Afghanistan because the ppl were there that attacked up on 9-11

OBL''s end is nearing. With Musharraf gone and Bush ending his term soon, there is no need to prop up that regime any longer.
I''m betting the US Army will breach the boundary into Pakistan soon and take out OBL themselves. Never trust anyone to do your own dirty work.
Can''t wait for a mythical UN response force under Obama''s guidance.
Goodbye Osama!
It''s about time, I say.
Too bad to spoil President McCain''s fun!

All jihadists must be destroyed. Not just the ones you''ve mentioned.
They (the jihadists) are all out for the same mission: To Islamicize the globe by forced submission and destruction.
So we have to include HAMAS, Hezbollah, The Islamic Republic of Iran, and all the other jihadists that are out there.
This is a war against Fundamentalist Islam, not just the Taliban and Al Queda.
