CBSNews.com ranks the top contenders to be McCain's running mate.

(AP)  Democrat Barack Obama challenged his Republican opponent John McCain on Tuesday to stop questioning his "character and patriotism."

Addressing the Veterans of Foreign Wars convention, Obama reaffirmed his early opposition to the U.S. invasion of Iraq and said the so-called "surge" strategy of sending 30,000 additional troops to Iraq last year had not produced the political reconciliation necessary to achieve lasting peace in the country. McCain supported the Iraq invasion and was an early champion of the surge.

"These are the judgments I've made and the policies that we have to debate, because we do have differences in this election," Obama said. "One of the things that we have to change in this country is the idea that people can't disagree without challenging each other's character and patriotism. I have never suggested that Sen. McCain picks his positions on national security based on politics or personal ambition. I have not suggested it because I believe that he genuinely wants to serve America's national interest. Now, it's time for him to acknowledge that I want to do the same.

"Let me be clear: I will let no one question my love of this country," Obama said to applause.

McCain stood before the same audience a day earlier and said Obama "tried to legislate failure" in the Iraq war and had put his ambition to be president above the interests of the United States. He said the Illinois senator did this by pushing for a timetable for withdrawal of U.S. combat troops from Iraq and by voting in the Senate against a major appropriations bill to help fund the troop increase.

A decorated Vietnam war veteran and member of the Senate Armed Services Committee, the Arizona senator has sharply questioned whether the 47-year old Obama has the experience and character necessary to serve as commander in chief.

McCain has also spoken out strongly against Russia's invasion of the Republic of Georgia, using Obama's absence from the campaign trail last week when he was on vacation in Hawaii to take a hard line against the Russian government. His tough talk led some of Obama's foreign policy advisers to suggest McCain may have complicated the conflict.

Obama strongly condemned Russia's actions Tuesday but said the U.S. involvement in Iraq had imperiled U.S. ability to take a leadership role in the matter.

"We failed to head off this conflict and lost leverage in our ability to contain it because our leaders have been distracted, our resources overstretched, and our alliances frayed," Obama said.

The Illinois senator also praised Joseph Biden, the Senate Foreign Relations Committee chairman thought to be among the top contenders to be Obama's running mate, for calling for an additional $1 billion for reconstruction projects in Georgia.

Obama is being too sensitive. People have every right to question his patriotism and anything else for that matter since he proclaimed himself a candidate for the presidency. With his disgusting decade''s long relationship with anti-US racist bigoted hate-mongerer Jeremiah Wright, and long-term reltionships with other filth like Pflager, Ayers, Farraskhan, etc. Obama isn''t exactly a role model for patriot nor appreciative or dedicated American. Boo-hoo-hoo the poor baby''s feelings have been hurt. Ooo, let''s all go and have a time out and contemplate being nicey-nice and all kumbaya now.

Most people in the USA are a lot worse off than they were 8 years ago. Inflation is all due to the failed policies of the Republicon Fascist Party, the devalued dollar is the cause of high fuel prices, all caused by the mounting Republicon irresponsible policies of borrow and spend away the US Treasury causing massive debt of the US government. Bush/McCain are the worst America has to offer. Imprison liars Bush/McCain!

Stop questioning my patriotism???

Sen. NObama by your own admission and writings, there is no question about your patriotism, because we all know you are a 50%-Amerifrican at best.

I only question what the folks who actually think of themselves as Americans are smoking these days to be supporting an empty suit like you.

A suit so empty this "feeble old man" left you wearing your butt for a hat this weekend in those BrokeBack Mountain style debates you whined for.

One thing has been made clear by the Rick Warren Show--McCain is a cheater, a liar, and a panderer.

Cheater--knew questions in advance;

Liar--his fairy story about the NVA guard and the cross in the sand is pure fantasy;

Panderer--didn''t really have a dialog with Warren, just trotted out the usual talking points for the born-agains.

Not to mention the radio broadcast he did for the North Vietnamese praising their air defenses.

Not to mention how he cheated on and dumped the wife who waited for him while he was in the prison camp.

Definitely Republican presidential material, like Bush.

Bush lied (too many times to document), cheated (wore a wire in the official Presidential debate), pandered (duh!)

But one big difference--Bush never cheated on or abused his wife. Give Bush credit for that.

Just another example of McCain being a nasty, old man who thinks he is owed the presidency because of his age, and his misfortune of being a POW. If you think the jerk in the white house is bad, just wait til the lunatics in this country elect this old geezer. Obama needs to take the gloves off and quit trying to be so above it all...

Sen. NObama, you are ranked the #1 most Libtard member in all the US Senate....A Senate that is comprised of admitted socialist, and plenty of un-American libtards....Yet, you are the ranking member??

And, you don''t think us real Americans, who are very pleased with our nation as built should be the least bit concerned about your patriotism?

An inexperienced, community organizer that has spent his whole professional career teaching folks how to suckle from the federal nipple??

Oh, I think there is plenty of reason to question your patriotism. Even discounting all the criminals, black seperatist, domestic terrorists and various other un-Americans who have been your moral and spiritual guides your whole adult life.

Oh yes, the fascists are very patriotic, wrapping themselves in the flag as they wipe their a$$es on the Constitutions.

Why do the Republicans hate our freedoms?

Why do the Republicans want to destroy our nation?

Greed? Power? Or just stupidity?

The name of the Bush-Cheney regime is Treason. But some rightwing talking heads think that is patriotism.

Before you go to whipping out the "fascist" reference at the GOP, why don''t you first explain your bosses at the DNC using their power to disenfranchise millions of votes from your fellow DemoTard lemmings during the primaries, so they could use their secret "Super Delegates" to install this 50%-Amerifrican empty suit as your candidate??

I thought it so closely resembled the night of the long knives....Wasn''t this what they called Hitler''s take over of the Nazi party full of fascist??

Who cares how do you calculate percentage of US Citizenship? There is no legal definition for the calculation. In the end the only thing that is important is they are both constitutionally natural-born US citizens eligible to become President. Can we now discuss a real issue dealing with a real problem facing this country?

I am not questioning Obama''s patriotism, Not at all!

What I am questioning is his ability to lead the nation patriotically. It just isn''t there. He repeatedly demonstrates that he needs help from others. His own campaign shows the evidence by all the flip-flops because he is getting and completely relying on help from his staffers. This does not impress me at all and in fact scares the living begievers out of me if he gets into power.

Just because he hangs out with America hating terrorists who blew up buildings in the 70''s, that''s no reason to question his patriotism.

All McCain is interested in is defaming Obama, rather than discussing policy and bread ''n butter issues important to the American people. McCain knows he cannot win on that, so all his campaign can do is tell lies, belittle the other candidate, and make personal attacks.

America deserves a debate, but we ain''t gonna see it with JukeBox John running a Bush campaign with Karl Rove taught handlers. By election day, Americans will not have a clue what McCain stands for since he has changed position on over 65 issues since he started campaigning.

And someone tell McSame that the American Petroleum Institute and NASCAR state that properly inflated tires and a tuned car seriously improves gas mileage.
