What to say to your child about Web porn and online predators, and how to look for signs of porn on your PC. Plus: warning signs that an adult may be communicating with your child.

(AP)  Fifty-five men, including a sheriff's deputy and at least one attorney, were charged with possessing child pornography following an eight-month investigation, authorities said Tuesday.

The U.S. attorney's office in Los Angeles said the suspects used peer-to-peer networks to exchange graphic images and videos, then stored the files on their computers.

All were charged with possession of child pornography. Some had been charged with additional offenses, such as production of child pornography and committing crimes while registered sex offenders.

Those facing charges include San Luis Obispo County sheriff's Deputy Bryan Jon Goossens and attorney Thomas Merdzinski of San Bernardino, said U.S. attorney's office spokesman Thom Mrozek.

A man who identified himself as Merdzinski hung up the phone after being asked for comment by The Associated Press.

Messages left for Rob Bryn, the press information officer of Goossens' department, were not immediately returned.

usclimey: I think you''''re right. I think that there is something genetic that causes certain behaviors. But oh, what a slippery slope we''''ll be on when we start screening people for what''''s acceptable and what isn''''t. Granted, pedophilia is definitely NOT acceptable but I certainly wouldn''''t want anyone deciding, for instance, whether being gay is acceptable, whether being depressed is acceptable, and so on.

The world is not ready to be making that choice.

To be genetic, it would have to be hereditary...
that does not compute.... ;)

I am not in any way a geneticist, but as I understand it there are recessive genes - they are heriditary, however they don''t show unless both parents have that gene. Eg blue eyes are caused by a recessive gene, hence two brown eyed people can have a blue-eyed child if this both have this gene. This could be happening with g*a*y gene, resulting in straight parents having gay kids.

And it IS dangerous. What if you were married, and you and your wife had a baby. If you''re that obsessed with child porn, do you think your wife would feel safe leaving you with your child?

It also fosters an environment of disrespecting another human being...a helpless victim, at that. It''s NOT normal. It''s pedophilia.

possesion of the material isnt dangerous to anyone. I think only the child molesters and abusers hould be put behind bars, and the ones who simply possesed child porn and didnt do anything else should recieve counseling.

Well, it sounds like you have some on your computer.

If you were a parent, and YOUR child was being put in pornographic situations, you would think differently.

Imagine some adult man violating your daughter...and it being share on the internet...how would you feel then?

Yeah, but they are supporting and encouraging someone who actually TOOK the pictures. So therefore they are just as to blame as the person who took the pictures. It''s called aiding and abetting.
