(CBS)  If you're one of those people who hasn't cleaned out your closets in decades, you could be in pretty good wardrobe shape: It's time to pull out those bell bottoms and pop on those platform shoes!

Being "fashion forward" this fall means looking back, to the styles of the '60s, '70s and '80s.

InStyle magazine's Subira Shaw brought outfits harkening back to those days and discussed the new/old trends, and how you can dress "retro" at any price, whether you're dressing up or down, on The Early Show Saturday.

All were influenced by clothes and accessories from those three decades.

You could go the whole-hog or just buy a few key pieces to look modern with a retro feel.

She says designers have discovered there's an interest in bringing something from the past back but giving it a twist and making it fresher and more modern - but not just from one period. Rather, the focus is expanded to 30 years.

'60s

Lots of signs of "Mad Men," and clean lines. A tailored look.

'70s

Shaw showed what she calls an "over the top, funky combination," but one that's practical if you want to work with outfits like it - the heart of the trend. The furry vest looks '70s. Everyone might not be so daring, but you could still make the trend wearable. The differences are striking, from one decade to the next.

'80s

It's a lot of fun, the base is black, it's sequins for day. If you work at a more fashion-forward job, this will work. But the idea is to have more sparkle. It looks very '80s with the sequins and ankle boots and a clutch. It's all about mixing and matching. First, look in your closet, then find the look that suits you best.
