(CBS/AP)  Lebanese security officials said Wednesday the toll from the morning rush hour bombing of a bus carrying civilians and members of the military in the northern city of Tripoli had risen to 18 killed and 40 wounded.

The officials said the dead included 10 off-duty soldiers. The blast occurred Wednesday morning when a roadside bomb went off on a busy main street of Tripoli as a public bus drove by.

It raised suspicions that al Qaeda-inspired Islamic militants may have sought revenge on the military for last year's fatal clashes.

But local media also link the bombing to tensions ahead of a visit later Wednesday by Lebanese president Fuad Saniora to Syria to patch up stormy relations between the neighbors.

Television footage showed a small public bus riddled with shrapnel from the blast. Shattered glass could be seen in the Banks Street in Tripoli's center.

The officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they are not authorized to speak to the media.

Tripoli has witnessed sectarian clashes in the past weeks that killed and wounded dozens of people.

The city is also close to the Palestinian refugee camp of Nahr el-Bared, which witnessed deadly clashes last year between Lebanese troops and members of the al Qaeda-inspired group Fatah Islam.

The explosion comes at an especially sensitive time for Lebanon. After weeks of struggling, the parliament on Tuesday approved a national unity government that gives the Iranian-backed Hezbollah opposition a more powerful say in the running of the country.

Also Wednesday, Lebanese President Michel Suleiman was expected on a landmark visit in Syria - the first visit by a Lebanese president in about three years amid soured relations between the two neighbors.

Get a life, FloydZepp. If you hate Christianity so much, become a muslim jihadist! They will take you right in and fit you with your own custom made suicide bomb belt.

What''s holding you back! You can take your aggression out on Christians and Jews just like they do, and then you can justify it by holding up the Quran which instructs you to do so.

Go for it Floyd! "Allah" is calling your name.

What is striking..
They let their sons and daughters get killed or suicide bombed..
They kill their neighbors..
They kill their fellow arabs..
THey kill each other

In 1970, Yasir Arafat and his Soviet-backed PLO attempted a coup in Jordan. The Jordanian military responded swiftly. Their Army and Air Force shelled and bombed the Palestinian settlement where Arafat was holed up mercilessly and INDISCRIMINATELY until no-one fired back. After 3 days of relentless, continuous bombardment, 20,000 Palestinians were dead, killed by their Arab brothers, ther co-religionists.

Nothing Israel`s done over a 3-day period even comes close to this.

Yasir Arafat escaped and re-established himself in the Nahr el-Bared refugee settlement mentioned in this report, before escaping again in 1982 to North Africa.

History almost repeated itself last year after residents of Nahr el-Bared settlement killed members of the Lebanese military.

This time, it was the Lebanese military that shelled the Palestinian settlement relentlessly and mercilessly. However, memories are long in the Middle East, so most of the Palestinians fled into the surrounding countryside when they realized what was happening. Only a hundred or so died this time.

A few days later, however, they returned when the bombardment stopped to find only half of the homes were inhabitable, leaving 10,000 homeless.

Once again, the Palestinians were attacked by their Arab alleged "brothers".

Terrorists thrive on confusion and chaos. They muddy the waters. There are really only two sides. You are either a jihadist or an infidel. A jihadi believes he has a mandate from Allah to murder and he will be rewarded in heaven for doing so.
