Detroit Mayor Wins Round In Court

(AP)  A judge ruled Tuesday that Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick didn't violate conditions of his bail in an assault case by visiting his sister, listed as a witness in the case.

Judge Ronald Giles rejected a prosecution move, agreeing with the mayor's attorneys that a no-contact order didn't include Ayanna Kilpatrick. The mayor had spent time with his sister during the weekend.

"I don't see the issue," the judge said. "I really don't. There isn't an issue."

Last week, Giles had sent the mayor to jail overnight in a separate perjury case after learning he had traveled to Windsor, Ontario, in July without notifying authorities, a condition of his release on bail.

Kilpatrick was released Friday.

That same day, the mayor was charged with assaulting two investigators who were trying to deliver a subpoena at his sister's house in July in the perjury case.

The state attorney general's office said in a court filing that the mayor had been ordered to have no contact with witnesses in the assault case.

Prosecutors said Kilpatrick violated that condition because he and Ayanna Kilpatrick were together Saturday at the home of their mother, U.S. Rep. Carolyn Cheeks Kilpatrick, D-Mich.

The defense said Magistrate Renee McDuffee had clarified Friday that Kilpatrick could have contact with his sister.

Giles said Tuesday the no-contact order was for the two investigators involved in the altercation.

If the people of Detroit are stupid for electing Kilpatrick twice, then so is everyone in this country for electing bush twice, and making Clinton a superstar for doing the same.

The prosecutor was just looking for trouble. Many people who live in border cities have relatives and family on both sides of the border. They cross it routinely. People not living in border cities wouldn''t understand the culture of casual crossing.

I am glad this judge was more fair-minded than the prosecutor. It is clear that the mayor has his enemies.

Let the justice system do it''s job. Political motivation makes poor justice just like judicial motivation makes poor politics.

"If you knew Detroit at all you would know why they elected a black mayor. Detroit proper is almost 80% black and when you have one of your own elected, it is hard to not do it again.

You sound very racist. "

Oh, stop whining with this nonsensical drivel about someone being racist. I lived in Detroit for 5 years during the Coleman Young administration and this is political reality. Consciousnes is dead-on.

Bush may be a pompas bumbling fool that can''t get his words straight, but he and his bunch arn''t any better than what the democrats have to offer. Besides, they don''t run the country anyway.
You say "Who runs the contry?"
Big Oil, the guys that are incharge of and have control of the big oil companies. Why do you think our cars drink so much gas?

I strongly believe that the people in Michigan and Detroit deserve a better AG ..... Not the current repug appointed by Bush & Gonzo. Cheers!
