In his second presidential campaign, Edwards ran as a populist, with a focus on poverty and health.

(CBS/ AP)  The ex-mistress of former presidential candidate John Edwards said Saturday she will not participate in DNA testing to establish the paternity of her daughter.

Rielle Hunter's lawyer, Robert Gordon, says his client is a private individual who wishes to maintain the privacy of herself and her daughter.

In a statement, Gordon says that Hunter is ruling out any kind of testing that could establish who the daughter's father is.

"Rielle will not participate in DNA testing or any other invasion of her or her daughter's privacy now or in the future," he said.

On Friday, Edwards admitted to having an extramarital affair with Hunter in 2006 but denied that he was the father of Hunter's 5-month-old daughter. Edwards said he will take a paternity test to prove he is not the father.

The decision by Hunter means that the issue of who the father will remain an open question.

Hunter's daughter, Frances Quinn Hunter, was born on Feb. 27 this year, and no father's name is given on the birth certificate filed in California.

A former Edwards campaign staff member professes to be the father.

Edwards, a former North Carolina senator who was the Democratic vice presidential nominee in 2004, confessed to ABC News that he had lied repeatedly about the affair with Hunter, then 42. In an interview which aired on ABC's "Nightline" on Friday night, Edwards said he would be willing to take a paternity test to put the issue to rest but wasn't sure whether Hunter would be willing to.

"I am and have been willing to take any test necessary to establish the fact that I am not the father of any baby, and I am truly hopeful that a test will be done so this fact can be definitively established," Edwards said.

The National Enquirer first reported on the affair in October 2007, in the run-up to the Democratic primaries, and Edwards denied it.

Last month, the Enquirer carried another story - the blaring headline referred to an Edwards "love child" - stating that its reporters had accosted Edwards in a Los Angeles hotel where he had met with Hunter after her child's birth. Edwards called it "tabloid trash."

Edwards' admission has stirred up more questions, reports CBS News correspondent Kelly Cobiella - When exactly did Edwards end the affair? And how did Hunter end up in a $3 million California home?

Fred Baron, a longtime financial backer of Edwards' campaigns, said in a statement Saturday that he helped pay for Hunter's move from North Carolina because of "harassment by supermarket tabloids," reports Cobiella.

Edwards insists he knew nothing of Baron helping Hunter move.

He also denies any knowledge of recent tabloid pictures that claim to show him holding Hunter's baby.

"I don't know anything about that photograph," Edwards said in the ABC interview. "I don't know who that baby is. I don't know if the picture has been altered, manufactured, if it's a picture of me taken some other time holding another baby. I have no idea."

In her statement Friday, Elizabeth Edwards said it wasn't easy to find out about the extramarital affair in 2006 but indicated she did not believe that her husband was the father of Hunter's daughter.

"This was our private matter, and I frankly wanted it to be private because as painful as it was I did not want to have to play it out on a public stage as well," she said. "Because of a recent string of hurtful and absurd lies in a tabloid publication, because of a picture falsely suggesting that John was spending time with a child it wrongly alleged he had fathered outside our marriage, our private matter could no longer be wholly private."

Edwards declared his presidential candidacy in December 2006. His wife campaigned enthusiastically with him and by herself in the months that followed. She announced in March 2007 that her cancer, formerly in remission, had returned and there apparently was no cure.

Edwards dropped out midway through this year's primaries. He recently endorsed Barack Obama and had been mentioned as a possible running mate. But as rumors spread of Edwards' possible affair it became clear that he would not likely speak at the Democratic National Convention later this month in Denver.

Edwards and McCain are both admitted adulterers. Like Edwards, McCain committed adultery while his wife was in the hospital fighting for her life. McCain''s wife waited for him for 7 years while he was a war prisoner in Vietnam. McCain divorced her. McCain married Cindy who was rich and young enough to be his daughter. If you care about this behavior from your president shouldn''t vote for Edwards or McCain. Edwards and McCain are the same in terms of their lack of personal morality while saying that they are a superior choice to Obama on family issues. Be an informed voter! Research the media claims and claims above. God Bless You and God Bless America!

I saw his interview on TV and if he thinks because he discusses this freely on TV and admits to "making a mistake" that we will forgive him, I hope that he is very wrong.

I was appalled at his demeanor and his arrogance and I disliked him more after the interview than when I just heard about him cheating on his wife.

An affair is always disgusting, but to cheat on a woman who is battleing cancer with children is just unforgivable.

I doubt his family is behind him, I recall a press conference they did last year and she was several feet away from him, I wondered about it then, but I do not wonder about it anymore.

A woman was on TV today and said that the woman told her that John said that he was in a loveless marriage and something else about his wife that I forget.

It appears the lack of love was on his end.

BTW - every man or woman that apologizes for their infidelity only does it because they were caught, and not a minute before, and that is what they are really sorry about - getting caught.

The New York news media tried to spike the story about Edwards until Obama needed a smokescreen. He is now behind that smokescreen trying to figure out a new strategy, now that they realize that America doesn''t want to elect a World President.

My posts have been deleted from CBS threads for no reason other than a whiny poster got mad at my opinions, stated they were going to report me, and the next thing I knew, I couldn''t login. Sounds like the aclu needs some CBS clients as well.

Evidently cheating on your wife doesn''t make you a bad president. Ask all the Bill Clinton supporters. Just like being one of the most liberal senators in the country apparantly does not make you a bad president. Ask all the Obama suporters. Why is Obama such a good choice? Is it because he will raise taxes for the rich to give to the poor? That sounds great, but remember that families making 42,000 per year are going to be considered rich. Throws a different spin on it, huh? Retired people may come out a little better and the rich can afford it, so...as always, the middle to lower-middle class will be the ones suffering the most. Drilling for oil?? He has consistently voted against it, so why is everyone stupid enough to think he will actually do what he says, none of the rest of them do. He just tells the oil companies, "drill on the land you have or lose it when the leases are up." That doesn''t mean "HE" is going to do anything to make sure that someone drills off-shore. He''s like ALL politicians, his world is so different than mine and yours, that he doesn''t care how long his "change" will take or if it even works.

"she will not pursue DNA testing to establish the paternity of her 5-month-old daughter"

1. The sl*t may actually know who the father is (or has narrowed the list to a couple of dozen).
2. She doesn''t want to jeopardize the hush-money payments she gets.

The loony-left liberal media has been hiding the facts about the scandalous affair of edwards for many months (while his wife has been dying of cancer!). They have found it better just to concentrate on their ALL-HUSSEIN, ALL-THE-TIME propaganda.

But the truth about slimebags has a way of getting out, and now that edwards has been exposed the voters are finally beginning to smell the stench from the outrageous behavior of the liberal media in its distortions, lies and cover-ups. They are also beginning to understand that the liberal media has fully and completely abandoned all journalistic ethics and will do anything to ensure victory for their favorite left-wing candidates.

In November the voters will, hopefully, reflect their disgust and outrage over how they have been treated by the liberal media by voting appropriately.

how come nobody has answered why it is so important to have a woman president?

Posted by jamesm12341 at 01:19 PM : Aug 11, 2008

It''s not. It''s important to have a qualified one. We currently have neither. If Hilary had gotten the nod, she was no more qaulified than current contender for several of the same reasons. Don''t care for McCain either, now what?

It''s NOT! It''s important to have a competent president, with sensible, concise plans and solutions...which Hillary was and had! As opposed to "that other guy" or the ''wrinkledy little white guy''.

So, in other words, Edwards is not the father of the child. Otherwise, why not have the paternity test done? This Hunter chick just wants to keep the speculation going. I don''t buy her BS for one minute!

Even if we assume that Edwards IS the father...so what? She''s a cute gal and his wife has grown "matronly", to say the least and is suffering from cancer. I would have nailed her myself. The real problem for Edwards is the MONEY issue. Where did the money come from? Was she qualified for the job she was ostensibly being paid for? Were taxes paid? etc.

Quite frankly, Lying Lizzzie does not even have any resemblance to a breast cancer patient who has gone through radical chemotherapy and radiation to try to cure such a disease!

I''d be willing to bet she had a tiny cyst removed and possibly a little radiation to guarantee against a malignancy...and then went on happy way eating herself into a happy scamming pudge!

How you could come to that conclusion is beyond explanation. It is quite clear from what I previously posted that my main concern IS the children. You either can''t comprehend what you read or you are so blinded by your libtard views that you grasp at straws to support your twisted views of reality...get a grip.

Here''s a scumbag (Edwards) who thought so little of his supporters and his party that even knowing he had cheated on his wife and fathered a child continued a run for his party''s nomination.

What if Edwards (scumbag) had won the nomination and this came to light four months prior to the election.

I''''ve never heard anything so stupid in my life! I know plenty of people who voted in the democratic primaries, and not a one based their vote on Elizabeth Edwards! Obama clinched the nomination long after Edwards had already withdrawn!

Yeah, after the DNC mafia had used John Lying Edwards face in their last gasp endorsement scam so they could push superdelegates to migrate to Obscamma...when the DNC and Obscamma all knew Edwards was a lying piece of skum, whose happy blooming family and disease ridden wife image was a fraud!

AGAIN, BOTH the Edwards should be made to pay back ALL donations to their scam campaign alleging their championship of the poor and how the people of this country deserved the TRUTH from its leaders!

Elizabeth Edwards is the reason and the woman who kept our nation from the First Woman President. If Elizabeth would have been an honest person, Hillary would have been the nominee. It is a sad day for all woman.

This is an issue between him and his wife.

Posted by concorde5 at 12:00 PM : Aug 11, 2008

No....it is between him, his wife AND his children. I
am sure his children will always remember how daddy was banging a s-k-a-n-k as their mother was dying. Not only are they losing a mother they found out what their father is really like. And I''''d put money down that the child is his...what a loser.
