PETA Likens Bus Beheading To Animal Abuse

Animal Rights Group Tries In Vain To Run Ad Using Image Of A Victim's Throat Being Cut

  •  (CBS)

(AP)  The animal rights group PETA has tried unsuccessfully to run a newspaper ad comparing the beheading and cannibalizing of a passenger on a Greyhound bus in Canada last week to the treatment of animals by the meat industry.

People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals said on its Web site it wanted to run the ad in Manitoba's Portage la Prairie Daily Graphic, which is distributed in the city near where a man stabbed a fellow passenger multiple times, then beheaded him and ate pieces of the body.

However, city editor Tara Seel said Thursday the newspaper had no intention of running the ad, which uses imagery of a victim's throat being cut, in reference to the slaughter of animals on factory farms.

"His struggles and cries are ignored ... the man with the knife shows no emotion ... the victim is slaughtered and his head cut off ... his flesh is eaten," reads the ad posted on the PETA site.

"If this ad leaves a bad taste in your mouth, please give a thought to what sensitive animals think and feel when they come to the end of their frightening journey and see, hear and smell the slaughterhouse," it says.

Lindsay Rajt of PETA said the ad was intended to be shocking and is meant to spur people to think about the terror experienced by animals who are raised and killed for food.

"Like human victims, animals in slaughterhouses experience terror when they are attacked by a knife-wielding assailant," the statement said. "We are challenging everyone who is rightly horrified by this crime to look into their hearts and consider leaving violence off their dinner plates."

Vince Weiguang Li, who immigrated to Canada from China in 2004, is charged with second-degree murder in the death of 22-year-old carnival worker Tim McLean. He has yet to enter a plea.

Thirty-seven passengers were aboard the Greyhound from Edmonton, Alberta, to Winnipeg, Manitoba, as it traveled at night along a desolate stretch of the TransCanada Highway about 12 miles from Portage La Prairie, Manitoba last Wednesday. Witnesses said Li attacked McLean unprovoked, stabbing him dozens of times.

As horrified passengers fled the bus, Li severed McLean's head, displaying it to some of the passengers outside the bus, witnesses said.

A police officer at the scene reported seeing the attacker hacking off pieces of the victim's body and eating them, according to a police report.

Li was been ordered by a judge earlier this week to undergo a psychiatric evaluation before he faces trial.

PETA's ad comes a day after Greyhound scrapped one of its ad campaigns that extolled the relaxing upside of bus travel.

The ad's tag line was "There's a reason you've never heard of 'bus rage."'

I also believe that animals should not be killed in an inhumane manner, but this is to much of a stretch of the imagination.

This is what you get when people watch too many children''s movies with anthropomorphic animal characters in them. The person that actually thought that this ad was a good idea really needs to go back and study human psychology and learn to differentiate the complexity of the human thought process and emotions from those of animals.

Humanity is in such a mess & these fools are worried my dinner must be from a chicken that is dead of old age or suicide.Strange how the real world is all around them & they are oblivious to it.

Part of what PETA is trying to get accross I think, is that abuse is abuse no matter how you try to excuse it. Sure, most of us eat meat, but that doesn''t mean we want animals to be abused in the process. It is disgusting no matter how you look at it, but the fact is we eat meat. But what is it about the slaughterhouses that seem to enjoy the torture more than anything. I truly believe these people are sick and I wouldn''t want them around me.

I really tried to make your connection with this story, but the only conclusion that anyone with a resonable view of the world would come up with is that you suffer neurotic & psychotic obsessions. Get help!

Last year a friend at work watch as a pitbull jumped a fence & attacked her neighbor''s Shih Tzu and rag dolled it until it''s back legs were literally ripped off. The owner of the Pitbull had the dog out down after that. Where does PETA stand on the issue of either dog?

This is what happens when liberals are allowed to breed and run around - unsupervised. What a bunch of total losers.

Injecting salt in to the brains of 9 month old babies is ok with these guys, but by God.....don''''t let us catch you being mean to animals.

What a twisted world we live in!

For crying out loud PETA please get off of our planet. Believe it or not humans are at the top of the food chain. In your twisted minds you compare this monstrosity to inhumane treatment of animals in a slaughterhouse. There is no connection what so ever. No wonder you people have no more credibility than the fanatical anti abortionists that think it is ok to murder doctors that perform the procedure.

I used to contribute to PETA regularly, and as someone pointed out, they do promote some important issues, but I''m really disgusted by the blatant lack of sensivity of this ad. It''s really quite unbelievable. This behavior by PETA only causes a loss of supporters and ridicule from potential supporters. This is one reason I refer to myself as an "animal advocate" instead of "activist." Because of PETA, "activist" has mostly negative connotations.

Assuming this info is factual Peta has just sealed(n0 pun intended) its fate even among people who might agree with a few of their ideas.
