A look at the life and meteoric rise of the president-elect.

(AP)  Former President Clinton will have a role at the Democratic convention in Denver later this month.

Democratic officials said Thursday that Mr. Clinton will give a speech on the third night of the convention, before an address by the as-yet-to-be-named running mate for Barack Obama, the party's likely presidential nominee. The officials spoke on condition of anonymity before the details were formally announced.

Exactly what role the former president would play at the gathering Aug. 25-28 has been the subject of speculation since his wife, New York Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton, ended her bid for the Democratic presidential nomination in early June and endorsed Obama.

Obama clinched the nomination after a sometimes bitter primary contest with Clinton.

Sen. Clinton is expected to speak on the convention's second night.

Earlier Thursday, Obama dismissed suggestions that tension between his supporters and hers could upset the gathering.

Obama told reporters that their staffs were working out mutually agreeable convention logistics. At the same time, Clinton was assuring her supporters during an online chat that she and Obama were "working together to make sure it's a big success."

Neither answered questions about whether Clinton's name should be placed in nomination so that her backers could record their votes.

Amid reports that some Clinton backers hope to raise her profile at the convention or even continue to push her candidacy, Clinton and Obama were publicly trying to ease the strained relations that exist between some of their supporters.

Flying home to Chicago, Obama told reporters that he had talked separately this week to Clinton and her husband, and that they were enthusiastic about having a smooth convention.

"As is true in all conventions, we're still working out the mechanics, the coordination," Obama said. One such issue is whether there will be a convention roll call on Clinton's nomination, he said.

"I'm letting our respective teams work out details," he said. Asked if that meant he wouldn't object to her name being placed in nomination and a vote taken, Obama said: "I didn't say that. I said that they're working it out."

Clinton has not said whether she will seek a formal vote on her bid for the nomination.

During the online chat on her Web site, she wrote that she and Obama will ensure Democrats are "fully unified."

Clinton was expected to deliver a prime-time address to delegates on Aug. 26, the second night of the convention. With the delegate roll call planned for the next evening, Obama was set to accept the nomination with a speech on the convention's fourth and final night.

"We will ensure that the voices of everyone who participated in this historic process are respected and our party is fully unified heading into the November election," Clinton wrote. "While no decisions have been made yet, I will make sure that we keep you up to date and involved with all of the convention activity."

Obama was asked whether allowing Clinton's name to be placed in nomination might lead to a catharsis for the party.

"I don't think we're looking for catharsis. I think what we're looking for is energy and excitement," he said.

Clinton insisted during the Web chat that she was sincerely behind Obama after someone asked whether she truly was supporting him or was "just saying what you have to?"

Another questioner wanted to know if there was any possibility her name would be placed in nomination, arguing that doing so "would at least give your supporters a voice in the choice for the party's nominee." She was noncommittal.

Someone else posted a note saying he hopes Clinton becomes Obama's running mate. In her response, Clinton repeated that she will do whatever Obama asks of her but it is his decision "and I am going to respect the privacy of that process by not discussing it."

The Clintons' stance toward Obama's candidacy is being closely scrutinized as the convention nears - particularly after remarks by Bill Clinton earlier this week during a trip to Africa. Asked whether Obama was prepared to become president, the former president replied, "You can argue that nobody is ready to be president," and said he himself learned a lot in his first year on the job.

The remark was widely viewed as tepid and unenthusiastic, particularly in light of Republican candidate John McCain's frequent criticism that Obama is not ready to be president.

Everyone knows the CLintons are voting for McCain. All those people care about is themselves and their legacy which Obama has ruined. Hillary is waiting to 2012 to run again.

The Clintons are the most awful, low life, lying, murderous, cheating, scandal ridden duo in the history of this country.

Hillary was the most over rated canidate to ever run for president.

Neither of them should be allowed at the convention. Hillary should jump on her broom and fly around in New York and Bill should go back over to Monica''s.

Billary''s canidatcy is over and so are the Clintons

With all the beautiful words that Bill has had for Obama in the last couple weeks (sarcasm is intended here) you really have to wonder just what is being offered to the Clintons. Remember the only polls ever showing Obama going over 50% are with Hillary. Also remember that Hillary has not released her delegates and she is asking for a full vote with her on the ballot because it would be cathartic.

Of course it is most probable that the Clintons are just going to be there to give their support for Obama and he will go on to November with the dem party behind him. As a McCain supporter though, I hope for the best%uF04A. Besides we all know how noble the Clintons are%u2026cough cough.

Remember, a vote for Obama is a vote to take away the threat of veto for Pelosi. Scary huh.

So like what''s the deal with Hillary - the Clintons are so *** smart and keep their cards so close to the vest it''s enough to drive the whole country up the wall trying to keep them from commandeering the nation''s agenda . . .

Like, does she have some master plan involving information that we''re not privy too, some nugget of oppositional research she intends to unload days before the convention which''ll tempt delegates to tip the balance back towards her?

Or is she in that ''never quit'' mode of denial that had her saying she was ''just getting started'' the last night of Primaries when Barack had enough delegates to clinch the nomination?

What is going on?!? They scare me a little bit :(

pt 2

Or is it ''leverage'' . . . but to what end? It''s more than just the convention they''re haggling over, isn''t it?

Are they just lashing out and scapegoating Barack out of frustration, envy, resentment, whatever because he stood in their way of getting what they want and now he''s got what they wanted?

Or maybe they''d be satisfied with Bill having some dignity restored (which he lost as a result of Monica/impeachment and the race-card accusations), and Hillary saving face and having the option of an ''out'' from the Senate (which she may never really have wanted in the first place)?

Would it cost Barack anything to help Bill mend relations with the black community or to promise Hillary and her supporters that if he wins he''ll nominate her to the Supreme Court? He wouldn''t have to do or say anything specific now, just make a public pledge of commitment or something like that . . . like wouldn''t you think that would calm the Clinton''s down? And if so, why hasn''t Barack made any of these sorts of promises (?)

LOL I totally get what you''re saying about how the Clintons are just by nature dominators. But Barack''s got all the power now - why not give them that inch with the caveat that if they take more than their given, it will be revoked and they will not be given any more inches until they can prove trustworthy. So like when they DO in fact take that given inch as well as a foot, Barack can take back the foot and remind them that if they want another inch they have to show that they''re going to respect his authority.

Don''t you think they at least deserve to be given the chance? There''s protocol in the Senate and Hillary who''s like 67th ranked and junior to a whole host of nincompoops respects that order, so she''s shown she can accept limits . . . and Bill will accept the limits required to allow Hillary to be seen as a player in her own right because of the Monica humiliation, wouldn''t you think?

I wouldn''t worry too much about the Clinton''s. Their both millionaires and have been more sucessful than you could ever hope to be. Bill had the best economy in this nation''s history and his wife will end up being the most powerful senator in the senate.

With that being said, Obama hasn''t won anything yet and could very well lose to McCain.

Bill will be remembered as the last president to go through Impeachment and Hillary will be forever tied to one word. Monica

The Clintons were and are now more then ever the best political joke ever told.

As for them being smart, Hillary couldn''t even pass the bar exam and Bill doen''t know what the meaning of the word "is" is, how hard is that.

I couldn''t stand them during the primaries, which is probably why I never even noticed how little there is to Barack because it was just so great that he was there as a viable alternative to the Clintons.

Guess I just can''t help feeling a little sorry for them - like they enter public service, and there was peace and prosperity during their tenure, and then the Monica thing happened which led to Bill being impeached for denying he had an affair, and led to Hillary having to hear along with everybody else all the sordid details of her husband''s infidelity. Like, that had to have left some unfinished business there for them and because their private life became public . . .

Like it''s not Barack''s fault they have unfinished business, but doesn''t he sort of have the power to help heal some wounds? IF it doesn''t cost him anything, it kind of sucks to see him not make the effort . . .

Well, nice spin but if money, his economic legacy, and being Senator were enough to satisfy these two then wouldn''t they be off giving speeches, writing books, and doing Senate work rather than being all up in arms over the DNC Convention which is usually so boring nobody watches except as highlights on cable news?

They spent over $10mil of their own money on a campaign that was already a long-shot . . . that ought to tell you something about what matters more to them . . .

The problem I have with that is that they brought all their pains on themselves. Everyone wants to feel bad for Hillary but she had every advantage in the primary. She has been talked about as our next president ever since Kerry lost. She ran a horrible campaign, said awful things about Obama while praising McCain.

Not to mention Bill has raped and murdered people in the past. So if you ask do I think he was a great president because he happened to be in office during the .com boom, my answer is no. Don''t forget who signed Nafta.

Hillary ran a nasty over confident campaign. She has gotten what she deserves, its called carma

Bill Clinton is one of the greatest presidents of my lifetime if not the greatest. He had the best economy in the whole history of the United States and went out of office with an approval rating that ninety nine percent of presidents can only dream about. The only other in my lifetime was Kennedy who''s popularity didn''t shoot up until he was killed.

It''s no secret that the far left didn''t like him because he worked across party lines and the *** didn''t like him because of "don''t ask, don''t tell" but other than those two groups, everyone else should be happy including the republicans.

I have a hard time believing that you tramps were raped when you come back for multiple doses.

The steel mills were a rust belt and the auto industry had shrunk due to robotics and the high cost of pensions and medical insurance WAY BEFORE nafta which only affected Canada and Mexico. If Obama believes that we will just "fall in line" he has another thing coming. Hillary supporters such as myself are going to the convention to demand for a roll call! Many delegates who "fell in line" behind Obama early on are having serious buyers remorse and are wondering if they made the wrong choice in supporting him. Obamas flip flops, gaffs, arrogance, questionable background, militant socialist/fascist associations and friendships, inability to unite the party have all given delegates a cause to worry not only for this political season but for future party elections. If Hillary is not the partys nominee then we will be voting for John McCain. The Democratic Party Leadership has turned our democratic process for electing our partys nominee has been replaced by a Socialist Election Process where a few select delegates get to Dictate who are nominee will be. The media willnot report this fact but it is the truth. There are many of us in the Democratic Party who will not sign on any furthur to the party socialist agenda. We encourage other courageous Democrates to join our cause

I have no reason to think Hillary is a witch but since you mentioned Obama, he got elected due to being able to give a good speech along with the liberal and conservative media joining forces to defeat her. Much of that same liberal media is no longer portraying Obama as the messiah. You have to watch the media because the lib media and the con media often have the same objective smiling and praising you while they stab you in the back. The liberal media has become noticably less enthusiastic about Obama. Rather than crying at rally''s with warm feelings running down his leg, Chris Matthews sounds a lot like a McCain supporter. Imeagine that! I''ve also noticed that people have mysteriously stopped passing out at the hottest point of the year. Go figure!
