Obama-Bayh Appearance Fuels VP Talk

Senators Campaign In Indiana; Obama Knocks McCain For Tire Gauge Mocks

  • Video Candidate Branding Battle

Presidential candidates John McCain and Barak Obama are getting personal in their campaign ads. Dean Reynolds reports on the success of this tactic.

(CBS/AP)  Democrat Barack Obama on Wednesday taunted Republican presidential rival John McCain for first mocking the idea of keeping tires inflated for energy conservation and then agreeing the practice works.

"It will be interesting to watch this debate between John McCain and John McCain," Obama said as he campaigned in Indiana with Sen. Evan Bayh, widely considered a top-tier candidate for running mate.

When asked about the air-pressure issue during an appearance Tuesday night, McCain said: "I agree with the American Automobile Association. We should all inflate our tires." Obama had noted that keeping tires inflated and cars tuned was endorsed by both NASCAR and AAA and should be part of any comprehensive plan to reduce reliance on imported oil.

However, McCain had spent recent days ridiculing Obama's remarks about tire pressure, telling a motorcycle rally in Sturgis, S.D.: "My opponent doesn't want to drill, he doesn't want nuclear power, he wants you to inflate your tires." The Republican National Committee, meanwhile, poked fun at the idea, sending reporters tire gauges with "Obama Energy Plan" emblazoned on the side.

The two rivals have been sparring for several days over energy.

Assailing his rival's energy plans, Obama said, "that's a debate I'm happy to have. Because Senator McCain's energy plan reads like an early Christmas list for oil and gas lobbyists. And it's no wonder - because many of his top advisers are former oil and gas lobbyists."

Obama's joint appearance with Bayh led to considerable speculation that Obama might announce a decision about his choice for vice president. But it was not to be.

Bayh said Obama would bring "a breath of fresh air" to the nation's capital. He said McCain "is not a bad man," but that McCain had some bad policies.

Bayh opened his introduction of Obama by saying he had some "good news" to depart. "In five short months, the Bush administration will be done," Bayh said. A McCain victory, he said, would mean "four more years of what we've had."

Bayh, a former two-term governor and son of former Sen. Birch Bayh, is a former supporter of Hillary Rodham Clinton, has executive experience and sits on the Senate Armed Services and Intelligence committees. Furthermore, Democrats view Indiana - which has not voted for a Democrat for president since 1964 - as competitive this year.

Later, the two made a campaign stop at Schoop's diner in Portage, Ind., where both shook hands. Obama ordered four cheeseburgers to go "with the works" and brushed aside questions on whether he might select Bayh as his running mate.

"We're in Indiana, we're campaigning with the most popular politician in Indiana," Obama said. Bayh, asked by a local reporter about the vice presidential speculation, said tersely, "Don't get me in trouble."

"[Is] he your vice president?,” one woman asked Obama during a brief stop at Schoops Diner where the two senators campaigned together, reports CBS News' Maria Gavrilovic.

"I haven't made a decision about my vice president yet," Obama replied and walked off to meet with other patrons. Several reporters pressed Bayh as well, but he wouldn’t budge.

Click here to read Gavrilovic's post in the "From The Road" blog.

Obama campaigned in Indiana as his campaign released a new television ad that seeks to link McCain to President Bush and questions whether McCain is the political maverick he claims to be. It shows McCain acknowledging that he agrees with Mr. Bush on most issues.

The ad also criticizes McCain on three economic issues of concern to middle-class voters: tax breaks for the wealthy, money for oil companies, and tax breaks for companies that send jobs overseas. The ad ends with a smiling McCain and Mr. Bush side by side.

McCain's campaign turned out an ad Tuesday in the other direction, suggesting that McCain differs from Mr. Bush and the GOP on important issues - without mentioning Mr. Bush by name.

In his appearance here, Obama also questioned McCain's claim to being a maverick.

While the Arizona senator has broken with his party on many issues in the past, he "reversed himself on position after position" to secure his party's nomination, Obama asserted.

"That doesn't meet my definition of a maverick."

McCain's campaign "ran an ad saying Washington is broken. No kidding. It took him 26 years to figure it out," Obama said.

Sigh, fresh young intelligent faces in the White House--what a wonderful thought---the Bush-Clinton-Bush reigns are OVER!!!!

At least Obama won''t be coming in with the same old baggage that has been carried in and out of the White House over the years.

I am really looking forward to a new look in Washington---out with the oldies (Pelosi Reed) in with brand new blood that has America in their best interest--not someone elses oil.

According to the recent polls, Obama, who had held a comfortable lead over "Bagdad John McBush (SURRRRRGE, DRILLLLL)" McCain is now tied in a dead heat with, as "HOT" Paris Hilton calls him, "that wrinkly white-haired old man"!

Today, it appears that "wrinkly, white-haired old man", just might be the next Great Emperor occupying the "throne" in the Oval Office (if he doesn''t have a stroke before then!). Obama''s campaign has stalled and now people are sending money to McCain instead of Obama. The only real attack against "SURRRRRGE" McCain, wasn''t from the Whimpo-crats, but from Paris Hilton''s video!

Yep, evil, cowardly Liberals, Progressives, and Whimpo-crats everywhere, we are headed for 4 more years of "George W. Bush". Karl Rove and Alberto "the Great Gonzo" Gonzales are ready to move back into the White House, and construction has already started on an adjoining office to the Oval Office where the Great Emperor Bush II will reside as McCain''s resident "advisor".

GOD HAVE MERCY ON US ALL!!!!!!

SIG HEIL, BUSH!!!!!!

You''re the craziest koolaid drinker of all if you mean what you say here. Four more years of Bush policies will bankrupt our country; even his former supporters don''t bring up Bush''s record anymore, they just attack Obama. Look at the way that McCain is trying to distance himself from this administration. Cheney has been told to stay home and I''m certain that Bush''s presence won''t be much appreciated either.

Unfortunately, our amended Constitution allows teenagers to vote in elections; that''s an unsettling proposition. I think it should be changed back to the minimum voting age of twenty-one. Hey, even during some of the caucuses, seventeen year olds were allowed to vote, so long as they''d be eighteen by the General Election.

Bush and McBush-- 2

Predictably, McBush and Bush move rightward toward disaster. From promising a blank check on Iraq occupation (already longer than WW2) to blessing the gyrations and plunder of Wall Street, McBush has nothing but more Bush disasters to offer. Already, Bush has left our country with a staggering debt to fund his own greed and folly.

Interestingly, the McBush you consider is not the McCain of years past. That McCain is long gone, and McBush replaced him. Like the "New Nixon", McBush is simply new packaging to sell an old product.

And the lack of effort and conviction shows.

Last February, McBush was on the ropes. In a test of character, McBush made a Faustian deal with the GOP to embrace the Bush faction platform in return for oil lobby funding and an agreement to leave behind many of his own criticisms of Bush.

Which left McBush simply more Bush-- stuffed and mounted to resemble the opportunist, criminally incompetent reprobate from Texas we know and loathe.

Proper tire inflation and tuneups are no joke.

Bush Administration estimates that expanded offshore drilling could increase oil production by 200,000 bbl. per day by 2030. We use about 20 million bbl. per day, so that would meet about 1% of our demand two decades from now. Meanwhile, efficiency experts say that keeping tires inflated can improve gas mileage 3%, and regular maintenance can add another 4%. Many drivers already follow their advice, but if everyone did, we could immediately reduce demand several percentage points. In other words: Obama is right.
***************************************************
How in the world are you able to keep up wtih the tires? Run over nails, getting them rebalance and rotated, and services every 6,000 miles is more cosly than inflating your dad gum tire. Oh guess what, the manufacture increasing the tire cost because of high energy (gas).

What!? The most incompetent and criminally corrupt administration in US history didn''t get your attention? To have passed through all eight years of Bush was incredibly difficult for America.

Most people polled express profound dissastifaction with Bush. Many consider him the worst president, ever, and a considerable number favor impeachment for what appear to be high crimes and misdemeanors against the people of the United States.

In contrast, Obama campaigns well on his own merit. In fact, Obama''s candidacy is centrist, and a sweeping breath of fresh air for American politics and hopes.

McCain''s overall campaign strategy ITSELF has ''flip-flopped''! He''s gone from being on one side THEN flipping to the other side (flip-flop strategy). TO,
being on BOTH sides simultaneously!

How''s that for a STRATEGY!? Now, since he''s covered both ways, he can please EVERYBODY---depending on where he''s at and who he''s speaking in front of!

How''s that for being a technical genius?! HUH?

All polls on the publics confidence in either candidate lean strongly toward McCain. This makes sense - Obama is a mysterious sudden global superstar that speaks nothings and makes people nervous. The only polls that favor Obama are the ones that ask "Who do you THINK will win..." A lot of people think Obama will win because he paid for huge media attention. Who will the people actually vote for? The one they''re more confident in, naturally.

Azure11, Obama is not right. Yes, we can save a little bit on gas, but gas is not the entire picture.

Automobile (gasoline) consumption accounts for only 20% of the US'' total use of oil. The other components of oil are used by power plants, jets, and industry. In case you didn''t know, gasoline only comprises a small percent of crude. Crude oil is made up of several hydrocarbons, which are extracted based on molecular weight and refined. Gasoline is a different liquid fuel than jetfuel or diesel or even the leftover gunk which is used in asphalt. Gasoline prices might go down $.10pg if we inflate our tires, but that won''t have any effect on other fuels derived from oil, and the economy will still tank. Jetfuel will still have the same amount of supply when car fuel consumption is decreased. Same with diesel... if we don''t INCREASE PRODUCTION ON OIL, then supply for jet fuel and diesel fuel will never increase, even if demand for automobile gasoline decreases. The truckers and airline industry are dying, and Obama''s plan does nothing to help them.

Saving on gas does nothing to help the other sectors. McCain, on the other hand, wants to increase crude oil supply, and he wants to decrease consumption. He too has called for more efficient cars. He wants to cut down on oil consumption from power plants by building 45 nuclear plants and more coal plants. Obama... "let''s just research alternatives while the supply diminishes and the economy burns."

Years of corruption!

so true. The talk about experience stopped quick when a little research showed that Obama had accomplished more in his short time in the Senate than McCain did in decades. Seems McCains "experience" is mostly in getting elected and playing politics, not doing anything for his country or his constituents.

Gee, if only we could get those rePUBIC-CON morons to do their JOB we pay them to do instead of playing stupid games with customized tire gages we might actually get a freaking BUDGET and some bill spassed.
FORGET the fact that for YEARS, AAA, car books and manuals and many others have advertised the long published FACT that proper tire inflation will save fuel, as weill avoiding ''jack rabbit'' starts and driving 55 instead of faster.
The rePUBIC-CON''s can only crack jokes about the inflation fact which they will soon learn about when they take their heads out of their azzes, the rePUBIC-CON''s energy ''solution'' is drilling off shore which as it was stated on the radio tonight will net about 200,000 barrels of oil a day by 2030, umm... Americans use today 20 MILLION BARRELS A DAY! 200,000 is about 1% over 20 YEARS, while Obama''s tire tip will save TODAY around 3%

NO ONE wants a nuke power plant in their ''backyard'' we havent even begun to solve the waste problem which people ALSO don''t want in their ''backyard'' stored underground for the next 50,000 years possibly contaminating their well water etc. That and COST is why none have been built in years, it can take 10 years to get a plant built and operational.

Coal is not the answer either, neither is drilling for more finite limited fossil fuel, the root of all of the problems is TOO MANY PEOPLE for too few resources. The USA had 150 million in 1950, now it''s over 305 million- doubled in some 50 years only.
Time to put a moratorium on producing CHILDREN, and then ONE child per couple because its guaranteed the oil is not going to last, coal cant run your CAR either
