"CBS News RAW": An eyewitness describes the brutal killing and decapitation of a seemingly innocent passenger onboard a Greyhound Canada bus traveling between Edmonton, Alta. and Winnipeg, Man

(AP)  A man accused of beheading and cannibalizing another passenger on a Greyhound bus in Canada pleaded Tuesday in court for someone to "please kill me," and was ordered to undergo a psychiatric evaluation.

Prosecutor Joyce Dalmyn, who argued for the evaluation, revealed new details about the attack Wednesday night. She said Vince Weiguang Li had a plastic bag containing his victim's ear, nose and part of a mouth in his pocket when officers arrested him. The only response officers received from him was: "'I have to stay on the bus forever,"' Dalmyn said.

Li, who immigrated to Canada from China in 2004, is charged with second-degree murder in the slaying of 22-year-old carnival worker Tim McLean - an attack which witnesses aboard the bus said appeared to be unprovoked. He has yet to enter a plea.

Li was scheduled to appear Tuesday to determine whether he should undergo psychiatric testing, but the judge in Portage La Prairie adjourned the hearing for a short recess to allow a legal aid attorney to confer with him.

Since his arrest, Li has declined to speak to prosecutors and his court-appointed attorney.

When asked again by the judge after the recess if he wanted a lawyer, Li shook his head and then quietly said "please kill me."

Li's remark was heard by reporters and confirmed by court clerks, but was not acknowledged by the judge. He is due back in court Sept. 8.

Thirty-seven passengers were aboard the Greyhound from Edmonton, Alberta, to Winnipeg, Manitoba, as it traveled at night along a desolate stretch of the TransCanada Highway about 12 miles from Portage La Prairie. Some were napping and others watching the movie "The Legend of Zorro" on bus television screens when Li attacked McLean, allegedly stabbing him dozens of times.

As horrified passengers fled the bus, Li severed McLean's head, displaying it to some of the passengers outside the bus, witnesses said. He then began hacking at the body.

A police officer at the scene reported seeing the attacker hacking off pieces of the victim's body and eating them, according to a police tape leaked on the Internet.

A church pastor, Tom Castor, who helped hire Li soon after he immigrated in 2004 with his wife, Anna, said the man never showed any sign of anger or emotional problems when he worked there as a custodian. Church officials said they vetted Li by contacting references listed on his application and running a criminal record check.

Friends started a Facebook group called "R.I.P. Tim" after news of the attack.

"He was a great person, he was kind, thoughtful, and he did not deserve this. I feel for his parents and sisters and his lil bro," Jossiee Kehleer wrote on the site. She called him "a nice, caring guy," in an interview by instant message, but declined to say more.

More than 105,000 people have joined the online memorial group.

What a horrific death.

This man, Li, needs confinement, whether medical or in prison.

Li seems to be a severely impaired in his mental faculties. He surely deserves the strongest penalties, however, he should be thoroughly evaluated and treated even before he undergoes any trial, so that he can understand the severity of his actions. Of course he should never go free for his actions, it is a seriously deranged person who can commit such acts. Thoughts and prayers go to Tim''s family and friends, he did not deserve any of this. But sometimes mentally ill people behave in un-understandable ways.

A few years ago, there was concern that many of those fleeing from Cuban were psychotic, criminals, crazies, and druggies. It was assumed that Castro was "cleaning house" and glad to be rid of this trash and getting his revenge by having them all sent to the US.

Sounds like the Chinese might be doing the same thing!!!

SIG HEIL, BUSH!!!!!

Where is all this horriblness coming from? This is just one of many terrible things happening like this. Is it the drugs that are saturating our society? Or..is it the devil running amok amonst us?
How does one human being do this to another human being? It is scary as all get out when you don''t even
know if riding a bus, shopping in a mall, sitting minding your own business someplace, or even in your own home, not bothering anyone, is safe. There seems to be no sanctity from all this carnage any where anymore. Something is TERRIBLY wrong!!!

immigrated to Canada from China.. Why don''t they say it the way it really is.. He was kicked out of China knowing he would be taken care of in Canada.. China knew he was a nut job and gave him the boot.. Just like so many other countries that send their criminals to America..

Yep. Keep on importing these people from barbaric countries without adequate debriefing, background checks or safeguards. If ever there was a great biological weapon, a 3rd world country would just have to send us about 1000 people--infected with a deadly disease that had a longer incubation period. If the countries claimed they were computer techs or nurses--we''d ahve them here and in key positions to kill us all. Maybe the guy was having a flash back from the old country--where the "ancestors" told him to do what he did for some reason. As if North America does not have enough sickos without importing more from around the world.

So take him out and lopp off his head.I do have a heart and this man is clearly crazy. But a mind that would do what he did,I don''t believe can be fixed.Even if it could he needs to be in the ground where he would never have a chance to do something like this again.

Stories like these are severe tests of one''s personal compassion. So painful, and so tragic. But the question that I wonder about is, how can this happen with no warning signs? Is that really the truth?

Clearly insane - and clearly if he can do it once, he''s too dangerous to ever allow out - medications, complete recovery - no matter what.

I don''t know whether to call those actions insanity or evil - we don''t understand the brain enough to even know how much of anything we do is a choice versus two chemicals rubbing up against each other next to a neuron. But to me, it doesn''t matter. He''s shown he is capable of this - even if we understand what caused it, it could happen again. He cannot ever be set free again.

this man should have been shot on the spot...it is also a very very good reason for the death penalty...people like this man in reality do not want to live...they cannot live they way a normal person lives..to keep men like this alive or anyone who has taken a life in this way is itself cruel and unusual punishment. THERE IS NO JUSTIFICATION FOR LIFE IN PRISON, IN THE END IT IS A WORSE PUNISHMENT.

Maybe the police will accidentally leave a knife in his cell, and then if he doesn''t hack his own head off within, oh, say, 30 minutes, an officer can kill the inmate and say he feared for his own life. That would be plausible, would it not?

P51driver: "Take him out back and hack him up like he did to his victim."
Wineberry: "I agree with that."

So you come out in public and coolly state that you would like to hack a man to pieces-- a man you have never met, a perfect stranger.

You are loonier than he is, and more scary.

Li Said "Please Kill Me"
All those witnesses saw him.
Let save the cost of a trial, and give him his wish.
Instead they will end up spending a million, to give him life in prison.

Iagree we do not understand enough about the brain to know how it works completely. If he is asking to die then he must have regained his sanity to understand what he has done. No matter what i do not believe a person like this should ever be let loose in society again.

During the first years of Communist rule in China back in the 50''s the entire country tried to purge itself of anti-Communists.
Well, one of the things many villagers did was to tie any suspects to a pole and then gut him or her while they were still alive and watch them die as they laugh at the victim.
If they want to these folks can be merciless.

God is where he always is. He does not control the actions of humankind. If He did, this would not of happened. We all have the will to make our choices. This man is obviously mentally ill, or looking to cop the insanity plea. In either case God is not responsible for this act. Could He have stopped it? I suppose. But for reasons we wont know until we die, He did''nt.

"Those savage chinese". They''re just like the white folks who mercilessly tortured and killed white and non-white folks for centuries (or is it not torture when white people do it). Just like the black folks hack each other up in the name of revolution.

It''s in human nature to be amongst many things, savage. Stop the foolishness already. No ''race'' is superior or inferior to another.

As far a the gods are concerned... I don''t know. Nor, does anyone else. If they did, they would be able to work miracles like cure the sick, feed the poor and raise the dead. The only reports of that happening were the Buddha and a few hundred years later Joshua of Nazareth.

This is BAD press for the coming Olympics. To see a Chinese immigrant janitor blow a gasket is not a pretty sight. Many were horrified when the news was first released. The Chinese government immediately exercised some political muscle and had it REMOVED from many media outlets. They were so shocked that they did not know how the public would react. They needed a COOLING off period. Good decision or not, it in no way represents the average Chinese person. There are many good Chinese and a few wackos just like in any other society.

Who is at fault ?

As a Professor of Society and the World, I teach that the stress of new societies often ends in tragedy, and sometimes even death. Who is at fault ? Not the newcomer who is just trying to fit in. Perhaps a co worker was racist, of had a nasty look, just because he is not "from around here." We need to find out more. When so called crimes occur, we need not end up "blaming", one person, because we are all responsible, as social beings. We need to welcome people of lands like ours, so that together we can be free of "borders". If we had a loving , understanding and Helpful communal society, where no one earned more than another, just because of "station" or "luck" - we would all be the equal, with no need to have any rage. Lets not blame, that burden is too much to bear.

Now, this! I say, his request ought to be seriously considered! He''s probably too far gone mentally!
