Bob Novak Retires After Grim Diagnosis

(AP)  Conservative political commentator Robert Novak announced his immediate retirement Monday because of his diagnosis of a malignant brain tumor.

Novak told the editor and publisher of the Chicago Sun-Times that he plans to focus on his treatment and recovery, said Sun-Times spokeswoman Tammy Chase.

Novak told the newspaper his prognosis is "dire," the Sun-Times reported on its Web site.

"The details are being worked out with the doctors this week, but the tentative plan is for radiation and chemotherapy," Novak said.

Chase confirmed Monday that Novak's tumor is malignant. He was discharged from Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston on Saturday, said Kevin Myron, a hospital spokesman.

Novak announced that he had a brain tumor late last month, less than a week after he struck a pedestrian with his Corvette in downtown Washington and drove away. He received a $50 citation for the accident.

Novak, editor of the Evans-Novak Political Report, has been a columnist for the Chicago Sun-Times for decades. He is perhaps best known as the longtime co-host of CNN's "Crossfire" from 1980 to 2005.

He was the first to reveal the name of CIA operative Valerie Plame. His 2003 column came out eight days after Plame's husband, Joseph Wilson, said the Bush administration had twisted prewar intelligence to exaggerate the threat posed by Iraq.

So your saying that 2 wrongs DO make a right? Your justifying all of this hate with %u201COh yeah! Well you started it%u201D. I suggest you try to bring your level of maturity above a 5 grader. I will agree with you that anyone who said anything hateful about Senator Kennedy is an A$$, who much like yourself and others here, does not understand the difference between disagreeing with someone and hating them. And one more thing%u2026.dismiss this.

I do not kow how you all can be so cruel. Yes he dropped Ms Plame - but look honestly the wheels were in motion waaaay before he REPORTED what it appreaed the country wanted. You followed the case - you read his column - I bet that one at least. Have some humanity the man is very ill and most likely will not make it.
I do not want backlash from this - all I am saying is you call him inhumane - so do one better DO NOT act like you are too.

"Has anyone or anything been compromised because of Novak''''s story?

The leaking of any intelligence agents name regardless is treason.

Intelligence is not one person with one bit of info. It''s the combination of lots of data large and small and then compiled by intellegence analsts. Most informants have no idea what they report is useful or not.

But instead the little minds only think of revenge. Nothing of the impact on other intelligence agents who think, "Should I continue if my cover might be leaked at any moment?" or even worse "Should I even get into this business?"

There is no such thing as a "benign brain tumor".

You can have a benign polyp on your colon, but ANY growth in your brain is not benign. snip?Posted by Nancy_Naive at 06:48 AM : Aug 05, 2008

Actually one can have a benign tumor in the brain, if you use the medically recognized difference between benign and malignant. Malignant is "Tending to metastasize; cancerous" and benign is "not recurrent or progressive".

I hope that this unfortunate situation causes him to take pause and look at the dishonorable way he''s lived his life including and especially his betrayal of his country.

He is one of the many modern conservatives who has chosen his party over honor, truth, country and even humanity.

The CIA said that she was covert and that her outing destroyed an ongoing investigation in to WMD proliferation and endangered other operatives who were cooperating with the United States. The Republican prosecutor and judge said she was covert and that her outing was extremely damaging to U.S. intelligence and security.

The way the law is written you have to prove intent to prosecute, therefore it is extremely difficult to prosecute.
