Sumatra Suspects Plotted To Kill American

(AP)  Indonesian terror suspects executed a Christian teacher in front of his family and were planning to assassinate an American language teacher before their arrest this month, a top anti-terrorism official and the suspects' lawyer said Monday.

The ten alleged militants have also told officers they were plotting to attack the Supreme Court to avenge the upcoming executions of the Bali nightclub bombers and attack a joint Singaporean-Indonesian military exercise, the security official said.

The revelations point to the resilience of Islamist militant networks in Indonesia despite a U.S.-backed crackdown that has netted more than 400 suspects in recent years and reduced the risk of more large-scale attacks on Western targets, most experts say.

Since Sept. 11, 2001, Indonesia has been hit by a string of suicide bombings blamed on members and associates of the regional militant group Jemaah Islamiyah, including the 2002 nightclub bombings on Bali island that left 202 people dead, many of them foreign tourists. The last major strike was in 2005, also on Bali.

The group of 10 militants were arrested in early July in a series of raids on Sumatra island. Officers have said one of the suspects was a Singaporean who trained in Afghanistan with al Qaeda. Twenty bombs packed with live bullets were seized from the men.

The men's lawyer Asludin Hatjani said Monday the group was responsible for shooting 59-year-old Dago Simamora, an Indonesian teacher, to death in front of his children last year in the south Sumatran town of Pekanbaru. The crime had previously been unsolved.

"It's true, they did that," the lawyer told The Associated Press. He gave no motive for the attack.

Late Sunday, the anti-terrorism officer revealed the men were also planning to execute an American teaching English in the town of Sekayu, which lies just west of Pekanbaru. He identified the teacher by his first name of Samuel.

A teacher at the SMU-2 school in Sekayu confirmed a U.S. citizen called Samuel used to work there, but left several months ago. She did not give her name. The U.S. Embassy in the capital, Jakarta, declined comment.

The anti-terrorism officer spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity, saying that revealing his identity would jeopardize ongoing anti-terror operations.

Hatjani declined to comment on that allegation, saying interrogations were continuing.

The officer also said the group planned to detonate one of the devices in the car park of the Supreme Court in the capital, Jakarta, to coincide with the executions of three militants convicted in the Bali attacks.

Authorities say they expect to execute the trio before the beginning of September.

He also said the group was planning to attack a joint Indonesia-Singaporean military exercise at Baturaja, the Indonesian military's major combat training area. It is located in south Sumatra.

The official declined to say how advanced the planning was in the operations.

Officers have previously said the group also planned to attack a cafe in the Sumatran tourist town of Bukittinggi, but aborted it at the last minute out of fears there would be too many Muslim casualties.

You have a point, but that doesn''''t mean we should declare Islam our enemy. We should rightfully declare Muslim extremists our enemy. It may seem like spliting hairs to you, but here is a world of difference if you come to know more about the situation beyond just the nightly news.

it is the responsibility of the media to put more ''face time'' for rightious muslims. The media tends to blur that very point. The fight against RADICAL islam MUST BE fought alongside the moderates and the more liberalized muslims..THAT IS NOT GOING TO HAPPEN BECAUSE it will not sell any pop-up advertisments.
Liberals NEEDS TO UNDERSTAND that this MAYBE thier glorious achievement per se, IF THERE IS SOMETHING THAT WOULD WATER DOWN THIS RADICAL FORM OF ISLAMIC IDEOLOGY..it would be liberalism. BUT THESE LIBERALS WOULD NOT COME FRONT AND CENTER because they decided to align themselves with radical islam because they share a common enemy..which is the United States of America. this calling for this hatred beats louder that thier calling to save innocent people.

The christian religion is being used as a devise to instigate war and pilfer resources from muslim and third world countries....It seem any country in the world with oil has war problems.

The term "muslim country" is a misnomer. Muslims didn''t exist anywhere until mohamed declared himself a prophet with a mission to start a new religion. He immediately invaded neighboring towns and the slaughter began and has continued for 1400 years. It''s all about the expansion of a political force in the name of religion to control property and resources. They are the original invaders and occupiers of the Middle East and continue worldwide in Africa, Europe, Asia, Indonesia and the Americas.
There was no USA or oil to blame...

That is because Followers of Allah are sub humans.. They do not value life.. They are jealous of the west because of the luxuries we have. They would rather live in the stone age so they may have their women un educated, un cleaned and unshaven..

I''m glad that I live where there are no muslims.. (that religion of hate should be outlawed) in a place where there are no strangers.. where people wave at each other and greet each other on the street.. A place where we help each other in hard times.. And not in a place where we treat our women like cattle..

I have a sad suspician that this story is written to continue to perpetrate anti-Muslim propaganda

When muslins are murdering people all over the world and have been for 1400 hundred years ''propaganda'' isn''t needed. The truth speaks for itself.

Its far to easy to stay in touch. It seem any country in the world with oil has war problems. You can be sure that Certain Interest Associations have something to do with it.

The city of Pekanbaru is also where Caltex oil companies have their regional headquarters and refineries. It is oddly coincidental how "religious strife" is always near western oil concerns.

"Now Indonesia? The whole world is against us. Whaaaaa!!!" Posted by anon00

Don''t believe all you read, there is much more to this story than the press will let you know.

Dago Simamora is a Batak name, and the Batak are a majority Christian ethnicity, although there are also large numbers of Muslim Batak people living just to the south of Lake Toba.

North Sumatra has just emerged from a bloody civil war in Aceh province, where separatists, tired of all the oil resources going to Jakarta and out of the country while they remained poor, revolted, and the revolt was an opportunity for criminal elements and local "mafias" to have their turf wars under cover of fighting the central government.

The recent tsunami caused so much devastation that differences were temporarily forgotten as the country pulled together to aid Aceh, and during the post tsunami cleanup, a peace agreement was signed between Jakarta and the separatists.

Now that the civil war has been declared over, and the army has withdrawn, the old local mafia rivalries are beginning to surface.

It is doubtful that "revenge" killings for the execution of the bombers would take place 2,000 miles away from Bali, more likely the victims are those in the crossfire of new turf struggles.
