(AP)  Dozens of insurgents in eastern Afghanistan were killed in a battle Sunday after more than 100 attacked a government center near the border with Pakistan, officials said.

American troops and aircraft assisted Afghan forces during the battle in Spera district of eastern Khost province, Governor Arsallah Jamal said.

The militants attacked police guarding the district center from four directions before being pushed back, Jamal said. More than 50 militants died, while the rest fled into Pakistan, he said. Two policemen died and four were wounded.

The troops "called for air strikes consisting of heavy machine-gun fire from helicopters," NATO said in a statement.

"Some insurgents attempted to take cover in a nearby building that helicopters then struck with missiles," it said. "The number of insurgents killed is in double-digit figures."

Also in Khost, a suicide bomber targeting a road construction crew killed one person and wounded four others Sunday, deputy provincial police chief Yaqoub Khan said. All the victims were road workers, Khan said.

Separately, several militants were killed and four were detained during an operation in neighboring Paktia province on Saturday, the U.S.-led coalition said.

The troops were searching compounds when a group of insurgents fired on them from a fortified position, the statement said. "Coalition forces responded with small-arms fire, killing the militants," it said.

Afghanistan faces growing militancy nearly seven years after a U.S.-led invasion ousted the hard-line Islamic Taliban movement from power.

The number of militant attacks in eastern Afghanistan has increased by 40 percent so far this year from the same period last year.

Afghan and Western officials say Pakistan has not done enough to crack down on militant hide-outs on its side of the border, a charge Pakistan rejects.

More than 2,700 people - most of them militants - have died in insurgency-related violence this year, according to an Associated Press tally of official figures.

"Silly child - al Qaeda was never IN Iraq. They''''ve ALWAYS been in Afghanistan - wondering WHY we''''re not trying to hunt them down / kill them.

Now they''''ve had ample to time to rebuild and are stronger than ever, while the non-terrorists in Iraq, have "been defeated"."

Sure they were. Even the Iraqi commanders testified they were training there. And we KNOW Saddam was paying $25,000 to each family that would strap on a bomb and go kill some Americans.

Hungry has this weird idea that Saddam was a saint...reckon he''s been listening to Obscamma too long?

Bin Laden plans to sacrifice every Taliban Leader to the Coalition. They only represent the rank and file, in his mind. Bin Laden thinks he will sit on a mountain of money from poppy sales. Taliban only face certain death.

2,700 Taliban died this year because Bin Laden sent them against Coalition Troops. Osama will clear every village of Arabs. He envisions the region filled with poppy fields to make him rich and powerful. Why share the profit with the average people? Bin Laden preys on the Arab People like a deadly parasite.

Wow, 50 militants each getting his 72 virgins. 3600 virgins used up in just one operation.

The Office of Virgin Redemption & Distribution, parcels out the women (some of them quite advanced in age) a few at a time, in order to prevent the very situation to which you refer.

What''''s left of the insurgency and al Qaeda in Iraq have fled to Afghanistan, where they are foolishly attacking U.S. and Afghanistan forces - and the terrorists are getting slaughtered.

Had we pushed on in Afghanistan when we started instead of backing off, maybe things would be different. We let the principle playmakers escape into Pakistan instead of sending them on to allah when we had the chance. You did a hell of a job, Rummy!

The number of militant attacks in eastern Afghanistan has increased by 40 percent so far this year from the same period last year

-could it be that they have been chased out of Iraq and back into Afghanistan? It seems to me that the activity with the Taliban was next to nil or non-existant and our troops were hardly engaged in combat in Afghanistan over a year ago. The 40% increase we''ve seen, and this is still pretty low level of engagement on our troops behalf, shows that it actually was next to nil so therefore no ball was dropped. Now if we could go into Pakistan and finish off the rest of the terrorists hiding there we''ll show them there is no where to hide. I think it is a silly arguement to say we should have left our troops in Afghanistan when there was next to nothing going on. If we had not gone into Iraq then the troops that left Afghanistan for Iraq would have instead been sent home based on the level of security we reached years ago. It''s strange, the surge that started last year in Iraq has worked and all of the sudden from last year there is a 40% increase in Afghanistan. Does anyone think this is a coincidence?

Pakistan can no longer protect the terrorists it supports. The ruse is over. Pakistan as a country has large areas that support the Taliban and al Qaeda, If pakistans own government can''t control these regions perhaps the UN should be authorized to do so see how these regions are disrupting regional peace.

caliguy55, I read the article about the army of volunteers that Obama employs to do things such as communicate in forums such as this. Considering I have seen virtually the same message and the same language on several other sites in recent days, I propose that you are not an average person who wants to engage in some politcal discussion but a person working for Obama. You are using the same "name-calling" phrases, the same buzzwords and putting forth the same message that I have seen elsewhere. Lets keep this for the average person and save the advertising for TV and Radio.

Question:

Who is supplying the money to purchase all the weapons used by the Taliban and Al Qaeda?

Does anybody know?

This is why McSame is becoming such a pathetic figure. Obama will beat him into the ground come November. And, McSame knows there isn''t anything he can do to stop it. McSame''s attacks will become even more negative as the election approaches. But, these attacks will only prove that McSame is devoid of any ideas as to how to clean up the mess left by the Bush/Cheney Administration. Obama 08!!!
