Mom Of Missing 2-Year-Old In Fla. Knows Where Daughter Is, Grandmother Says

(CBS/AP)  The grandmother of a missing 2-year-old Orlando girl told an emergency dispatcher that a car driven by the girl's mother smelled like there had been a dead body inside, according to recordings of 911 calls released Thursday.

The mother, Casey Anthony, 22, is being held on $500,000 bond after investigators said she lied to them and did not report daughter Caylee Marie Anthony missing for more than a month.

Prosecutors said in court earlier this week that Casey Anthony is also a person of interest in what is beginning to look like a homicide investigation, though she has not been charged. Sheriff's deputies testified that her car smelled of decomposition and a cadaver-trained German shepherd noted a smell of human remains there.

"I think what's important is grandma's very clear initial suspicion that the daughter was involved," said CBS News legal analyst Lisa Bloom. "The daughter has no good explanation for where she is and there's that unmistakable odor of death in the car. The police, when they testified at the bond hearing a couple days ago, also said they smelled it as well."

Cindy Anthony, Casey's mother and Caylee's grandmother, called 911 twice on July 15. In the first call, she asked police to arrest Casey Anthony for stealing a car and money.

She told a dispatcher that she had just found Casey, who had been missing for a month, as well as the car she was driving, which had been towed. She also expressed concern that her granddaughter was not with Casey.

She called 911 again about an hour later, crying, after she said Casey Anthony finally told her Caylee had been missing for a month.

"There's something wrong," Cindy Anthony told the dispatcher. "I found my daughter's car today, and it smells like there's been a dead body in the damn car."

When Cindy Anthony made her daughter talk to the dispatcher, Casey Anthony said the toddler had been taken by a baby sitter who police now believe may not exist.

Casey Anthony said Caylee had been missing for 31 days, and the dispatcher asked why she hadn't called sooner.

"I've been looking for her and have gone through other resources to try to find her, which was stupid," Casey Anthony responded.

Cindy Anthony told CBS News' The Early Show that Casey knows who has Caylee but doesn't know where she is.

"She's been cooperating with the police and telling them from the get-go that the babysitter has her," Anthony said. "We just need to find that person who was responsible for Caylee the last time Casey placed Caylee in those hands."

"I've maintained all along my faith in my daughter," Anthony told Chen. "We are looking for a missing child, and I'm going to continue to look for her, if I have to look on my own."

Thus far, Casey Anthony has been charged only with child neglect, making false official statements and obstructing a criminal investigation.

But Circuit Court Judge Stan Strickland ordered her held on an unusually high bond Tuesday after hearing the evidence of possible human decomposition found in her yard and car.

Strickland said she offered investigators no useful information and questioned the truthfulness of the information she did provide.

Phone messages and an e-mail seeking comment were left Thursday with Casey Anthony's attorney, Jose Baez.

He asked to have her bond lowered to $10,000, saying she had a right to freedom while facing lesser charges. He said there was circumstantial evidence of a possible homicide but it hadn't left authorities confident enough to charge her with anything more serious.

"She has no charges whatsoever relating to harming, intentionally harming Caylee," Baez told The Early Show. "So, you know, when people are saying this is a homicide investigation, I couldn't disagree more. This is a missing child and we need to find her."

first she stole the car and went missing for 1 month. later the grandma called 911 for the stolen car then found her car towed with dead stench odor on it. the daughter was missing for 1 month and the granddaughter never reported lost by the mother for over a month and the car smelled death inside, what do you think happened? Casey Anthony is guilty of murder. Why murder, because she planned it and hide it by lying to her parents and to police.

Excuse Me, I think everyone sure as hell does know what they are talking about!

1. The mother recklessly endangered her daughter with the willful act of neglect she imposed on her by not immediately reporting that precious baby missing.

(BTW IMO this makes her look guilty of a lot more than what she may or may not have done)

2. As if # 1 was not bad enough she has done nothing but hinder the police investigation into locating her missing daughter by telling lies to the police.

3. The back yard of the grandparents home was searched with cadaver dogs and they hit on the smell of human remains, folks this does not happen without a dead body being buried in that location! Then the cadaver dogs hit on the same human remain smell in the trunk of the car that belongs to Casey Anthony, again folks that does not happen unless human remains have been there.

*And no before anyone says it garbage does not smell like human remains, nothing does, trust me I have smelled it and you never forget it once you have smelled it*

Now I believe all that is needed are a few more pieces of the puzzle and we will have the full picture of what happened to Caylee. I am of course hoping for a miracle that she is alive and well somewhere but logic is telling me that something terrible happened to that precious angel and either directly or indirectly because of her inaction Casey Anthony is responsible for it.

The calls actually contradict what was said later by the grandmother. This whole thing stinks of a cover up by the family to protect someone.

This is a tragic story. I think the grandmother knows everything. It seems to me that she is spending way too much time on TV. Her lies are unraveling now. Her 911 calls are being played on FOX News. As a minimum she knew her grand daughter was missing for a month and did nothing but try to pressure the daughter. I say throw the whole bunch behind bars until you find out the truth.

The kid is dead, period.

The mother absolutly knows what happened, and is very likely responsible for her death, and is obstructing justice (a charge that will get dropped when they find the body buried 2 feet down in a vacant lot less than 5 miles from her house - and charge her with murder). The mother was on a shopping spree after the kids went "missing", a very typical behavior pattern for a parent (usually mother) who commits infanticide.

The grandmother knows what happened too, and she is also obstructing justice with her subterfuge of new stories and lies every hour.

I think that one of two things have happened. One, something has happened to the child and the mother is hiding her to keep her safe. What mother wouldn''t want to protect their child! Or the only other plausable thing like everyone else the mother has done something.
