In-Depth VP Hot Sheet: McCain CBSNews.com ranks the top contenders to be McCain's running mate.
"I'd love to give a speech in Germany. But I'd much prefer to do it as president of the United States rather than as a candidate for president," McCain told reporters after a meal of bratwurst with local business leaders at Schmidt's Sausage Haus und Restaurant in Columbus' German Village neighborhood.
As Barack Obama delivered a high-profile speech in Berlin, McCain said he was focusing his attention this week on economic issues, including soaring food and fuel costs. He has been busy campaigning and raising funds in key battleground states like Ohio.
In what was clearly not a coincidence, McCain spoke with reporters shortly before Obama began his speech at Berlin's Victory Column.
At the same time, The Republican National Committee was running anti-Obama ads in Berlin, Pa., and other namesake villages in Wisconsin and New Hampshire.
McCain is trying hard to get attention during Obama's week abroad. He had planned to visit an offshore oil rig in the Gulf of Mexico on Wednesday, but rough seas leftover from Hurricane Dolly caused him to scrub that trip. He was to appear with famed cyclist Lance Armstrong later Thursday at a town-hall meeting here that is focused on cancer. And on Friday, he'll meet with the Dalai Lama, the Tibetan spiritual leader, in Aspen, Colo.
He said he regretted not being able to make the trip to the drilling rig, a visit intended to emphasize his support for Congress lifting the ban on offshore drilling.
"I'm sorry Congress is gridlocked again on offshore drilling," McCain said. "When I'm president, we'll all sit down together and work this out."

- Obama''s romp overseas was just a publicity stunt meant to promote his socialist agenda. Obama was too spineless to go without a humongous entourage. He''s a political coward and empty suit. All of his wardrobing, scripting, rehearsing and theatrics will not change the fact that he is a phony and an inexperienced and unqualified fraud. He is insubstantial, much like his dellusional supporters who aren''t up to the challenge to question and demand more from this rhetorical robot. Obama acts like he;s the new Napoleon, or the lunatic Julius Caesar, or the new ruler of the new global order. He certainly kept inferring in his speech before those in Berlin his vision for one giant pot being shared by everyone, including those that neither put into it, nor deserve any part of it.

- I believe that God is continious to appeal at this evangelical christians conservatives leaders has the call themself to me it take more than title to prove commision by God through His Holy spirit to lead His peoples the christians peoples so to speak. It is Ironic to see how for exemple this so call leaders like john haggee dobson and what not can interpret the signs the prophesy of olds and yiet fail to interpret or understands the sign of right now like mother nature stop and prevent senator John MCcain from attending a trip mint to press with a plan of drilling oil in a off shores coast of louisiana has MCcain as stated that He regretted not been able to go there because mother nature stop Him will that be a clear sign for this so call prophets indeed but nevertheless this prophets are prophets but not of God for theys are not listening to God words or following His signs I say has one who is commisioned by God they are falses prophets, liars, decivers and self appointed and not commision by God through the spirit of the Lord Jesus-Christ .For God is love unconditional love love one another that set.

- I believe the last thing John McCain needed to do was to campaign in a German resaurant - done in relation to Barack Obama''s visit to Germany. This just shows to me John McCain''s personality, a passive-aggressive. What has John McCain mainly focused on this week? Barack Obama and his trip to various countries. Wasn''t it McCain who suggest he go abroad? And didn''t McCain go abroad? If Barack Obama has 3 networks going with him that''s his decision. But I don''t want to hear McCain "whine" that Barack Obama getting more media coverage...McCain surely could have brought someone along to report on his abroad meetings.

- Sounds to me like Republicans are scared silly and don''t know what to do with themselves these days. It is hilarious just reading all their desperate yells for help. It seems as though they know their candidate, John McSame, has no chance of wining so they in turn have no hope. Has anyone noticed they have nothing good to say about John McSame but all they do is whine and attack Obama. The Republican Party...home of the whiners, blah, blah, blah. Here is some good news on John McCain while out a german restuarant yesterday six people showed up....Listen we all know the enthusiasm for John McCain barely breaks the teens so the few that are on this board are the few included. Their voice is small and worthless......just trying to save you guys some time..

- Obama might urge that black Americans take more personal responsibility, but his programs have government agencies trying to micromanage their lives. McCain%u2019s policies fit better than Obama%u2019s do with Obama%u2019s rhetoric.

- Can''t say he made a bad choice. After all, he''s running for the Presidency of the United States, not Germany. I for one couldn''t give a tinkers doggone what Europe thinks. Especially the ones whose rear ends we had to save not once but twice,......and PAID for it. Evidently the smart Germans left for here. I know plenty of them, not to mention related with Germans, and they are SMART as well as lovers of freedom. But hey, I guess a socialist has to go to a socialist country for commie strokes. By the way, how do you say Uhm, duh, etc,... in German? Folks love and tout the sound of Baraks vocal chords, but are rather quiet at the sound of his thinking impediment. That must be why they call dudes like him "talking" heads instead of being a "thinker"........That all aside, what I wouldn''t pay for a good German Jaegerschnitzel meal..... UGH! I miss it!

- The republican''ts seem to waste no time twisting the facts to continue to scare Americans into voting for McSame. Obama''s tour overseas included a visit to Iraq to ask questions of the commaders there and assess the situation in Iraq. And Obama went on to Israel and then to Europe to engage our allies. At least Obama is reaching out to our allies from whom we need help to fight the war on terrorism. It seems to me that McCain wants to go at it alone in Iraq and the war on terrorism by not engaging our allies. McCain is trying to relive Vietnam by saying that America alone can achieve the victory in Iraq and on the war on terrorism. When Bush goes to Europe, Bush is met with protest and demonstration. The excitement that Obama is generating by his visit inspires me to think that America can restore active diplomacy with our allies and generate a spirit of welcome and excitement just as Obama has done here at home. McCain inspires nothing but negative, xenophobic, status quo politics that don''t make any sense. America has had to endure almost 8 years of Bush''s crappy agenda that has left America''s economy in tatters, gasoline prices almost triple what they were before Bush took office, and european allies that are mostly cool to Bush''s foreign policy positions. If Obama is generating excitement among our allies, I can only wonder how that would help America in the long run. McCain = Bush And America needs a positive vision for the future. The status quo has to GO!!!

- Q: Please define victory for us in Iraq and when you know we''''ve achieved it?
McCain: I know how to win wars, and Obama has no military experience.
Q. Once again Mr. McCain, please define victory for us in Iraq. And, when will you know we''''ve achieved it?
McCain: I''''ve been right all along and the surge has succeeded. My opponent was against the surge.
Q. Excuse me sir. Please Mr. McCain, please define victory for us in Iraq. And, when will you know we''''ve achieved it?
McCain: Democrats want to lose in Iraq. They want to surrender.
Q. Thank you for your detailed answers Mr. McCain. - Reply to this comment

- Time for McBush to quit the snarky insults and tell us exactly how we''ll be better off with him as president. At least Obama hasn''t descended to his level of mudslinging. And McBush is a big, big target for mud. Next to Obama, McBush has nothing meaningful to say, just a bunch of half-truths and bromides. I guess that''s why he resorts to attacking Obama -- he''s got nothing else going for him. I''ll bet the GOP swift-boaters are gearing up...

- CBS intentionally edited CBS Nightly News McCain interview where he blatantly lied about the Awakening Counsel being established by the surge (happened to be in place months before there was any talk of a surge). Not a big deal? Either he is lying about Iraq strategy for political posture or he doesn''t know what is actually happening. Either way - the public has a right to know and NOT BE DECEIVED BY CBS - who coincidentally "edited" his answer with one given to an entirely different question.
DEMAND THAT CBS FIRE KATIE COURIC - Send an e-mail to CBS (@ "contact us" page) if you feel that the public deserve honest reporting and not deliberate editing of a presidential candidates lies. No doubt in my mind Couric had something to say about that edit. CBS - WAKE UP!! There is a reason your news rating have plummeted to their lowest level in 20 years. - Reply to this comment

He is so full of it. Why don''t he just shut up and campaign. He ran all over Mexico, Columbia, Canada, while his wife was in England, while Barack was talking to the heartland. He has been all over Iraq, blathered on and on about Barack''s lack for foreign exposer, on an on about how he should go to Iraq.
The only thing that I have seen McCain do is bash Obama. No ideas, just bash. Of course, that is the Republican way, so no surprise. But it is so silly and contradictory that I can''t imagine any thinking person could take him seriously. - Reply to this comment

Mccain you are a senator, why can''t you work this out now. Why? Because you are goe most of the time. You have missed 60% of the votes in this session - Reply to this comment
- CBS covered up McCain''''s ludicrous assertion that the "Surge" was responsible for the Anbar Awakening.
The Surge was in ''''07. The Awakening in ''''06.
CBS owes us an apology for the doctored Couric interview, and CBS needs to set the record straight on McCain.

- If Mc Bush handles this country like he is handling his campaign we are in big, big, trouble. Mc Bush wants drilling off shore and look what is going on in New Orleans today, there is a reason we do not want off shore drilling. This cbs format is advertised by Exxon Mobil. They can afford it look how they ripped the Alaska people off with there spill off. Thanks to a Bush court.
