"Step Brothers:" A "Brotherly" Love Story

(CBS)  It's been two years since Will Ferrell and John C. Reilly have teamed up to make "Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby."

The two funny men are at it again - bringing their on and off screen comedic chemistry to the set of their new movie "Step Brothers."

Ferrell and Reilly sat down with Early Show co-anchor Harry Smith to share the laughter and sarcasm - and to prove that comedy is not just two guys "goofing around for money."

In the comedy, Ferrell plays Brennan Huff, a "sporadically employed" 39-year-old, who lives at home with his mother Nancy (Mary Steenburgen).

Reilly plays a "terminally unemployeed" 40-year-old, who lives at home with his father Robert (Richard Jenkins).

What starts out as a story of two step brothers bumping heads, ultimately becomes a brotherly love story, Smith observed.

The idea of the film came from "the desire to want to hang out together again after 'Talladega Nights,'" Ferrell jokingly said. He also admitted that Reilly was the one who kept the wheels in motion.

"We had so much fun working together," Farrell said. "It was really John who kind of was the impetus to keep this thing going. We sat down with (director) Adam Mckay and came up with this idea."

The movie borders on a true "bromance."

"It's almost like 'Brokeback Mountain' meets 'The Odd Couple,'" Smith said.

"Without the sex," said Reilly.

"And the horseback riding," Ferrell chimed in.

The movie offers the chance to see another side of actress Mary Steenburgen, who plays Ferrell's foul-mouthed mother.

"It isn't appropriate for those not allowed into R-rated movies," Reilly admitted. "But if you do happen to sneak in, it's not going to be like one of those things where it breaks your mind or something and you're damaged for the rest of your life. It's all pretty innocent fun with a little blue language."

At 55, Steenburgen is barely old enough to be the 41-year-old Farrell's mother.

"We had to try to make her look older, which was impossible," Ferrelll said.

"Step Brothers" opens nationwide Friday, July 25.

My husband and I love Will Ferrell movies! The more stupid they are the better we like them. Just recently, however, we rented "Semi Pro" and were very put off by all the foul language. I don''t ever remember any of his movies being as such. If "Step Brother" is anything like "Semi Pro" then I''m out!!!!
