Events, key players and a history of the world's most unstable region.

(CBS/AP)  Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama defended his proposal to negotiate with Iran Wednesday and said he would use "big sticks and big carrots" to persuade the country's leaders not to develop nuclear weapons.

"My whole goal in terms of having tough, serious direct diplomacy is not because I'm naive about the nature of any of these regimes. I'm not," Obama said at a press conference. "It is because if we show ourselves willing to talk and to offer carrots and sticks in order to deal with these pressing problems, and if Iran then rejects any overtures of that sort, it puts us in a stronger position to mobilize the international community to ratchet up the pressure on Iran."

He said a nuclear-armed Iran would pose a threat to both Israel and the United States.

The campaign of Republican presidential candidate John McCain quickly responded that Obama was backtracking on his expressed willingness to meet with Iran's leaders without preconditions.

A year ago, Obama was asked whether he would meet personally, without preconditions, with leaders of Iran and other hostile nations during the first year of his administration to resolve differences with the United States. Obama said he would.

On Wednesday Obama said, "I think that what I said in response was that I would at my time and choosing be willing to meet with any leader if I thought it would promote the national security interests of the United States of America. And that continues to be my position. That if I think that I can get a deal that is going to advance our cause, then I would consider that opportunity. But what I also said was that there is a difference between meeting without preconditions and meeting without preparation."

This was Obama's second press conference during his trip to Afghanistan, Iraq, the Middle East and Europe, part of his campaign's attempt to establish his credentials as a potential world leader. He spoke in Sderot, near the Gaza border. The city has been a frequent target of rocket attacks from Palestinian militants, and the news conference was held beside a display of the spent rockets.

Obama tried to use Wednesday's event to allay doubts about his support for Israel. Many Israelis are worried by Obama's willingness to talk to Tehran, a bitter enemy of the Jewish state. Many U.S. Jewish voters supported Obama's rival Hillary Rodham Clinton for the Democratic presidential nomination, and some have questioned his commitment to Israel.

Obama said it is in Israel's interest to achieve a lasting peace with the Palestinians, but he emphasized Israeli's right to defend itself. He also said that Jerusalem will be the capital of Israel, but that the issue should be settled through negotiation.

"That's an issue that has to be dealt with the parties involved, the Palestinians and the Israelis, and it is not the job of the United States to dictate the form in which that will take, but rather to support the efforts that are being made right now to resolve these very difficult issues that have a long history," Obama said.

Many Israelis are concerned that Obama - a first-term U.S. senator with little foreign policy experience - would push Israel too hard in negotiations with the Palestinians. His family's Muslim roots have added to the unease, even though Obama is a Christian.

"I bring to Sderot an unshakable commitment to Israel's security," Obama said. "The state of Israel faces determined enemies who seek its destruction. But it also has a friend and ally in the United States that will always stand by the people of Israel."

Palestinians doubt Obama or any other U.S. leader would reverse what they see as Washington's bias toward Israel.

Earlier in the West Bank town of Ramallah, Obama assured Palestinian leaders he'd get involved in the Mideast conflict quickly, a top Palestinian official said.

In his meeting with Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas, Obama confirmed "that he will be a constructive partner in the peace process" and would not "waste a minute" if elected, Abbas aide Saeb Erekat said.

Obama plunged into the intricacies of the region's longest-running conflict with a packed schedule of meetings with Israeli and Palestinian leaders.

CBS News anchor Katie Couric spoke exclusively Tuesday to Obama in Amman and to McCain via satellite.

Donning a Jewish skullcap at Israel's Yad Vashem Holocaust memorial, he laid a wreath of white chrysanthemums and lisianthus and lit a memorial flame. "Despite this record of monumental tragedy, this ultimately is a place of hope," he said.

"At a time of great peril and torment, war and strife, we are blessed to have such a powerful reminder of man's potential for great evil, but also our capacity to rise up from tragedy and remake our world," he wrote in the visitors' book.

American tourists who passed by him at the memorial told him, "Remember what you see here," and he replied, "Yes, I understand, I understand," said Yad Vashem's director, Avner Shalev.

Late Wednesday, Obama met with Prime Minister Ehud Olmert. Entering the session, Obama said his talks with Abbas indicated "there's a strong sense of progress being made" toward peace. Olmert nodded and said, "That's right."

Earlier, Obama met with Israeli Defense Minister Ehud Barak and parliamentary opposition leader Benjamin Netanyahu, whose Likud Party takes a hard line against the Palestinians.

Obama met with Barak and Netanyahu at Jerusalem's posh King David Hotel, where an "Israel for Obama" campaign poster was draped over an armchair in the lobby. The poster included Obama's campaign slogan - "Change you can believe in" - in Hebrew.

Obama left Abbas' headquarters without speaking to reporters. But on Tuesday, he cautioned it is "unrealistic to expect that a U.S. president alone can suddenly snap his fingers and bring about peace in this region."

His meeting with the Palestinians stands in contrast to the decision by Republican presidential hopeful John McCain to visit only Israel in March, without stopping in the West Bank.

On the road leading to Abbas' headquarters on Wednesday, police were out in full force, standing 10 yards apart and outfitted in full battle regalia, wearing camouflage uniforms, helmets and bulletproof vests and carrying truncheons and assault rifles.

Obama arrived in Israel Tuesday night from neighboring Jordan and is to leave for Germany early Thursday.

mcvet-you do sound more lucid. Good for you. Before you start the ranting and name calling, remember, not everyone shares your view of obama. We are still permitted to hold another poltical view. I am not a Bush supporter and have not been for a long time. However, I am conservative and do not trust obama. He is being handled, he is being shoved down our throats, he is a marxist. As for ignorant, Bush was not and is not ignorant.
Last night I watched footage of the empty suit stepping off the plane with his hand in his pocket, chewing gum and, by God, swaggering. I feel obama is arrogant and smug. He is a pure Chicago politican with questionable ties that would have caused the downfall of any Republican. If your guy does make it to the WH remember, he will not be setting policy, his handlers will. AND we will be in a world of hurt.
Perhaps you are for "redistribution of wealth". Me, I pay high taxes, that''s enough.
Now, you are off to a good start. If you reply, be civil and remember, I still have the right to my own opinion.
Glad you appear to be feeling better.

Posted by MCVet,

Unfortunately, there were many of us who thought moral character was more important than job performance. Yes it is desirable to have someone with a decent values, but those were also lost with the lies of this administration.

I am a professional and I value competence in my leaders. As far as their religious beliefs, they are none of my business and to make it part of the hiring decision is descrimination.

Obama is far better choice because selecting McCain is selecting the GOP and its their agenda that is responsible for economic downturn.

I have to go to work, have a great day!

For the second night in a row "stubborn" Obama still can''t admit that the "surge" has worked.

First it was on ABC and last night with Katie on CBS. Obama is "more" stubborn than George Bush!

Looks like Obama justs wants to "stay the course" on his 16 months US troop withdraw from Iraq, which is based on "nothing".

Look Obama is clearly over his head and like a fish out of water. The guy has "no business" where he is today. It just goes to show''s the power of corrupt "mass liberal media",Hollywood and our MSM wolfpack press. Together they have taken a totally unqualified guy, Obama, and used the power of "propaganda" to put him where he is today.

Thank God the American people are starting to see through this horrible hoax..............sad

Then again, after a Bush, the world would welcome a donkey with open arms too.

But then again, Obama''s great statemanship is just a bonus. It marks him as the next leader of the United States, his undeniable, inevitable march to the White House and the overthrow of the neocons and their horrific reign.

Obama is playing his role to the "t". He gropes and touches and embraces as if he''s been buddies with other statesmen. Yet another display or presumptive arrogance. This is just as disgraceful a showing as when President Bush would flub his pronunciations and try to act the same. Obama''s behavior and mannerisms are low class and very unstatesmenlike. He is uttering nothing more than well written sentences that most intelligent people would be able to state. I am sick and tired of seeing the face of this phony contrived and fraudulent individual all over the media as if he were the second coming. He is all about rhetoric and bravado and lacks substance and relevance. There are unfortunately far too many who are intellectually derelict when it comes to seeing Obama for what he is - another empty political suit and hack that vomits nothing but cliches and catch phrases that appeal to the pedestrian masses.

Stop voting for the old school democrats and republicans, we want term limits two 4 year terms only for all of Congress so there are fresh ideas and less corruption.

This should be for all government positions, we get too entrenched in the old guard''s way and forget how to grow our economy.

Old people stop voting for old people and young people look for those running with at least 7 years of experience in government and read where they stand on the issues.

Don''t be brainwashed America, we have marketers brainwashing us on every product from clothes to toys including drugs, we have the media brainwashing us on who to vote for with their slanted coverage.

I can''t in good faith vote for either candidate but will vote for any one other than Democrate or Republican just as a protest about our system of voting.

You say you are not a Bush supporter, but the only viable alternative to Mr. Obama is a direct clone of Bush, guaranteed to continue the failed policies that were the last major step that got us into the mess we are in.

You also say on one hand that Mr. Obama is "handled", then turn around and say he is a "marxist", which is a direct contradiction. If those "handling" Mr. Obama were marxists, then we would already be a "marxist" state. Because the people "handling" him are the same people who "handled" Bush, i.e., big corporate money, and these are the last people who would create a "marxist" environment.

Redistribution of wealth? Far from it, what we need is the recirculation of currency. So you were lucky, and made some money, which you have locked away from circulation. Since so many of your peers, large corporations, war profiteers and the like have done the same, the lack of money circulating is not enough for a viable economy to function, so what is your solution?

Would you deny those working just as hard, if not harder than you, a chance to receive just compensation for their labor?

Our brave American soldiers have gone to the most dangerous part of the world and replaced a murdering dictator with a democracy. Most Americans honor them and appreciate their patriotism.

The commander-in-chief wannabe showed up in Iraq for a few photo photo opportunities and should have stopped there. As soon as he opened his mouth he quickly reminded everyone how little he knows about foreign affairs or the military. This fraud would not even pass an FBI security clearance to get into the service as a private because of his association with the bomber, Bill Ayers.

Obama is unqualified and unfit to lead the best military in the world.

After reading coverage of these same events in several other news venues AND after hearing Katie Couric''s interview with Obama, I am convinced that CBS is pro-
McCain. Other articles stress how LITTLE time Obama spent with the Palestinians, while it''s right in the headlines from CBS. I am saddened that CBS has decided to become a republican propaganda machine and no longer covers news stories in a neutral fashion. Frankly, I am very impressed with Sen. Obama''s grasp of the extremely complex and delicate situations he faces in the Mideast as the next President of the United States.

It''s amazing how Obama puts world leaders "at ease" they are easily impressed and trust his intellect.

Obama is more then qualified to be commander in chief and President because he uses a tempermant and sound judgement of a strong but smart leader.

I know Republicans are dissappointed at their nominee. They more they see how delusional, and out of touch with reality makes people in his own party shudder at the idea that America could make another horrible and disastrous decision by putting John McCain in the White House.

John McCain doesn''t know who the enemy, doesn''t know how admit defeat for himself and his party and John McCain only admitted that he knows little about the economy. These things alone make John McCain unfit and UNIQUILEY UNQUALIFIED to lead this nation.

Thank goodness most Americans already know that.

This is Obama''s plan, legacy, and shows his charisma as well. First, all he is is a black teacher at law school. That''s what he is using. Traditionally, when I think of a black professor, I think of someone who knows the laws dealing with "minorities" over everything else. I mean that''s what they are best at, what they like dealing with, and what is expected of them by their students. So, here comes along Obama with that label. Minorities such as radical extreme Islamist groups can use this fatherly protection against the United States to come in and learn how to fly planes for example. Obama is keeping his fingers crossed when he talks to the heads of countries such as Palestine, Iraq, and Jordan. It might work in the short term for the terrorists. Maybe they want to see what they can get. Thus, unintentionally or intentionally Obama is telling countries such as these that maybe he wants to send American troops to Afghanistan to kill them like over 10,000 Russians were killed there. That''s Barack Obama''s plan, legacy, and secret. That''s why I''m begging you to vote for John McCain. John has the experience to get things done. God Bless Senator John McCain, our troops, and the United States

Later, he said: "I am always taken back to sort of the core question of humanity that the Holocaust raises. That is, on the one hand, man''s great capacity for evil, and on the other hand, our ability to come together to stop evil."

The fact that he actually admits there is evil surprises me, but anyway Mr. Obama, how did we stop that "evil"? We had to fight not redraw that''s how. This is his first priority to the American people. To withdraw our troops from Iraq. What people need to realize is what doors will be opened to the world and America by terrorists once we retreat from our quest to keep them down. They will view us as the cowards we will become because of the weakness of Obama to be a strong leader to protect his nation''s people. We have allowed ourselves to become so blinded by the crazies on the left who actually believe that we do not have to fight for freedom, that we have become weaker and weaker. And so the other anti-American haters in the world will step in and take us by force one day. What will you who support such ideas say then? Even the Israeli and Palestinians see his weakness on foreign policy. Him being the appeaser that he is, will turn his back on Israel and leave them a sitting duck for the Palestinians and other factions to destroy. America''s final downfall is coming when we turn our back on God and His people which is where all of our Christian values came from and which we founded this nation on.

Seven of every ten Italians, two-thirds of all French and Germans, and half of Britons sober enough to be able to respond to a poll question would vote for Obama to be president of the U.S.A. if they could.

However, if you asked the French, the Germans, the British and the Italians if they%u2019d vote for a black candidate to govern their own countries, the results would be different, even if the candidate were the black JFK du jour. Those million Germans in Berlin will all be long gone before a man or woman of African descent becomes chancellor, prime minister or president of any European country. The French had a hard enough time voting for a chap of Hungarian descent; the odds of them voting for a %u201Crat%u201D %u2014 as they quaintly call their North African immigrants %u2014 are impossibly long."- DENIS BOYLES

Being a liberal like yourself with all of your self-loathing and living in America must be hell for you. You have a mental disorder and yes, it is sad that all these people are opening their arms to the likes of Obama bin Laden. I don''t trust him and we will all see in the end so don''t be surprised or upset when the neocons say, "I told you".

Obama, has grown up with the hatred of whites so much that he is planning on actually bombing the White House to destroy the word "white". He will use the failed flight 93 in his plan since that may have been their target.
