(AP)  A body with its hands bound was found Friday at the apartment of a woman who showed up at a hospital with a newborn she falsely claimed was her child but later said she had obtained for $1,000, authorities said.

The body was found in the home of 38-year-old Andrea Curry-Demus, police said. Authorities would not say whether it was male or female.

Wilkinsburg Police Chief Ophelia Coleman said the body was found lying face down. She said she didn't know how long it had been there.

Police visited the building Thursday night but did not go into that apartment, Coleman said. Instead, a relative of Curry-Demus led them to another apartment, she said.

Earlier Friday, police said they were concerned that the infant's real mother - described as a thin, black female in her 20s or 30s named Tina - might be in danger, or need medical attention.

The description was provided by Curry-Demus but authorities aren't sure how reliable it is because she "has a history of emotional problems," Coleman said earlier Friday.

Curry-Demus pleaded guilty in 1991 to aggravated assault after stabbing a Wilkinsburg woman in an alleged plot to steal the woman's infant. Curry-Demus, then known as Andrea Curry, was sentenced to 10 years' probation.

Allegheny County homicide detectives have taken over the investigation, but Allegheny County Police Assistant Superintendent James Morton declined to comment at the scene Friday night.

The mystery started when Curry-Demus showed up at West Penn Hospital in Pittsburgh on Thursday with a newborn baby, police said. Tests later proved she was not the mother - despite her claims to the contrary, police said.

Curry-Demus was arraigned Friday on a child endangerment charge and jailed until she posts $10,000 bond and undergoes a psychiatric exam.

"I didn't do nothing," Curry-Demus told reporters as she was put into a police car Thursday.

The baby's umbilical cord was still attached when Curry-Demus arrived at West Penn, but tests proved she was not the mother - despite her claims to the contrary, police said.

Curry-Demus then told police she miscarried in June and didn't want to upset her own mother by telling her she had lost the baby. Curry-Demus said she befriended a pregnant woman and discussed buying her child when it was born, according to the criminal complaint.

Curry-Demus told police she paid a woman named Tina $1,000 for the baby, but authorities have said they don't know how she got the baby.

Keithle1: If I was your mother, I would have been very tempted to abort your azz - is that why you are so bitter about women, or is it that you just can''t get laid?
There is nothing MANLY about you except your name...

You cannot by ANY stretch of the imagination call this a MISJUDGMENT. If it turns out that this body found was the mother of the baby in question, and it turns out the baby didn''t cut it''s own way out of the womb, but was stolen by this psycho who should have been in a locked ward, are you suggesting that we should just LOVE her back into society, and she would NEVER do this kind of thing AGAIN??? Look at her past history - she has already tried it before. Think that her need for a baby is satisfied now, and no other pregnant woman would be in danger around her???
What kind of fairy cloud do you live on?

We must remeber the victims. There is now a mother that will never hold her child, a parent that has lost a daughter. It is a tragedy for all involved. Is prison the answer? Should the rest of the country foot the bill for this woman to be incarcerated for the remainder of her life? I say make her family pay for it. What better way to teach responsibility than to have families responsible for their own.

ColonieNY

Is your idiocy a product of growing up in a male dominated society, or are you just simpleminded all on your own?

Women like you give all strong, self-reliant women a bad name. Stop blaming, stand up and live up to your potential INSTEAD OF BLAMING!

Maybe she didn''t. Maybe she is the body that was found face down with hands tied. I wouldn''t believe anything about this case until all the facts are in.

Our nation is getting crazier and crazier. All these weirdos, when arrested, need to be tested for various kinds of drug presence and the results entered into a database for future information.

Any attack on a pregnant woman should be treated as 2 and given double sentences. Unless the woman is carrying twins, then it should be 3 terms and so on...

And this should apply to ANY stage of pregnancy, even if the perp couldn''t have known.

All this blaming will get society nowhere. This woman obviously is desparate for love, and the structure of life probably taken away from her by a Dominating male society, be it an individual or school authorities.
What type of sports did she play in HS ? I would bet that all the funding went to MALE sports, and thus this is another case where the women are left out. We need to disband male sports and give that money to help girls/women cope with the male dominated society. Who is to blame here ? Society and male sports.

This time, the mother lived, but only because the nut, didn''''t cut the baby out. She was waiting for the mother to give birth.
janeyre?

Where did you read the MOTHER lived? It states dead body in the apartment. Not that it was the mother.

Oh no you didn''t Keithle1. This is so sad, and you think women are bad? Most of the crimes are committed by violent males. Surely you are aware of this. I am not sure what motivates the violent males, but, they sure create more death and mayhem, than any female could.

We have a nut here, that tried to take a baby, from it''s mother. This time, the mother lived, but only because the nut, didn''t cut the baby out. She was waiting for the mother to give birth. These women should get the death penalty. They will only repeat it. Look at this nut. They gave her 10 years probation, Why?

And TackItOn, not to mention most of the rapists and serial killers (who have done FAR MORE SCREWED UP THINGS) are men but hey...let''s ignore that shall we? If women are all that then there are not enough words in the English language to describe how f**ked up and sick men can be, and...AND how society can be when men are let off the hook ESPECIALLY when it comes to crimes against women (ahem...honor killings is the first thing that comes to mind).
But that''s not being f**ked up, that''s just being "manly", HA!

Families need to take MUCH better care of their mentally ill relatives. -- They ARE responsible you know. -- The same way you are responsible if you know someone is drunk and you hand them your car keys. -- We must do a better job of dealing with mental illness, and a better job of raising our kids to be sane and healthy. -- The whole world is depending on it.

So what tackiton? I know of a woman who cut off her two children''s hands with a chopper because her husband was a gambler and she wanted to stop them gambling. The truth is that both genders are equally capable of violence. The female gender gets a lot more sympathetic treatment when it perpetrates it though.

Yeah Keithle1,
It''s nothing like the man who threw his children off a bridge and killed them because he had a fight with his wife. You act like women are the only ones who are nuts!

Not to even mention all the men including my ex who beat the you know what out of women and kids.

You men have no room to talk!

If they still have that umbilical cord laying around, they should use it to strangle Curry-Demus.
