Forest officials say the bear entered a tent at the Soda Butte campground, near Cooke City, at about 3 a.m. and bit a camper on his hand and arms.
The camper was asleep when the bear entered, forest spokeswoman Marna Daley said.
"The only specifics I know is that he was injured while protecting himself, and I believe he has bite and claw injuries to his arms," she said, adding authorities believed the bear was a grizzly, rather than black bear.
The camper received emergency care at the scene and was taken to a Cody, Wyo., hospital. A spokeswoman at West Park Hospital declined to release any information about his condition.
The camper's name was not released, and Daley said she did not know his age, whether he was camping alone or what attracted the bear to his tent. She said it appeared the camper had properly stored his food.
As a precaution, the Forest Service closed the Chief Joseph campground as well as Soda Butte. The sites are along U.S. 212 east of Cooke City, about five miles from the northeast entrance to Yellowstone National Park.
Daley did not know how many people were evacuated from the campgrounds.
In a news release, the Forest Service said there was evidence the bear visited the Soda Butte campground at least once after the Thursday morning attack. The campgrounds will remain closed "until the bear is located or the immediate concern subsides," the agency said.
The Montana Department of Fish, Wildlife and Parks is investigating the attack and will decide how to deal with the bear, forest officials said.
Daley said campers are being reminded to follow the forest's food-storage order, which includes storing food, drinks and personal hygiene products in bear-resistant containers, or suspending them at least 10 feet off the ground and 4 feet from any trees or poles.

- The above statement seems to be contradictory. The situation is very critical and need an experienced campaigner to resolve it.

- Maybe he was in the wrong place at the wrong time? Or was he just minding his own business, have some rotgut whiskey, and a bear walked into the bar... ? Otherwise, if he was in a bear''''s habitat, then nature took it''''s course and killing the rest of the bears makes no sense.

You sound like a fool. I just do not understand why some people believe that it is more "the bears'' habitat" than it it "the humans'' habitat". Humans are on the earth competing for food and space just like the bears.
It is totally idiotic to suggest that a bar or other building in a populated area is all that human can inhabit. Where do you think our ancestors lived? There were no condos for early man. If the bears could kill us all and take our habitat they would not have any problem with that. I have no problem with killing them. - Reply to this comment

- FOR the lady whose brother was killed by a grizzly, I extend my condolences. But the number of people who are injured or killed by bears is miniscule. Bear numbers are declining, human numbers are climbing. Look at the big picture.

If this was a dancing bear, and the camper took her home to his tent, does that constitute consent? - Reply to this comment
- Well Morgan the idiot, tell me one or more people that have gone to jail when killing a bear in self defense. U are an idiot for saying stuff so stupid. I wager a 1000 times more bears have been killed by people than people have been killed by bears, and I would win the wager hands down. And bears don''t go to jail, they just get shot down. U people know you are in bear country but prefer to act like you''re at your favorite mall or fast food restaurant wherever U go. Go move your trailer park closer to town or something.
