CBSNews.com ranks the top contenders to be McCain's running mate.

(AP)  Republican John McCain told a mostly female audience Friday that his plans to cut income, business and estate taxes would help women while Democrat Barack Obama's proposals would only erect new economic obstacles for them.

A day after Obama devoted a day of campaigning to women's issues, McCain did the same.

He told several hundred women in western Wisconsin that his tax cut plans would be particularly helpful to women because so many of them own or work for small businesses.

"Yesterday in New York, Senator Obama went on at great length about how much he cares about women's issues," McCain said at a town-hall forum in Hudson, where women vastly outnumbered men. "I believe him. But when you cut through all the smooth rhetoric, Senator Obama's policies would make it harder for women to start new businesses, harder for women to create or find new jobs, harder for women to manage the family budget, and harder for women and their families to meet their tax burden."

Obama's campaign disputed the claims and noted that McCain opposed a Senate measure to lengthen the time that workers have to file pay discrimination lawsuits, a priority for some women's groups.

McCain told the audience that he has a record of supporting equal pay for women. He later told reporters he opposed the Senate bill because he didn't want "open-ended litigation by trial lawyers." He said he has demonstrated his support for equal pay "in a whole broad variety of ways, from support of women in the military to all kinds of laws that provide employment" to women.

Republicans believe McCain has a chance to pick up Democratic and independent women who are angry or disappointed that Hillary Rodham Clinton lost her bid to become the first female president. But the Hudson event seemed geared to hard-core conservatives.

A woman drew loud cheers and applause when she told McCain: "The Democratic Party has moved so far to the left they're almost falling off of the planet. Will you hammer away at their socialist, Marxist philosophy?"

When the cheering finally died down, McCain revived it by answering, "Yes."

He eased the tone a bit later, talking of his willingness to anger fellow Republicans in the Senate by working with liberal Democrats such as Russ Feingold of Wisconsin and Edward M. Kennedy of Massachusetts, who is "in our prayers" because of his battle with cancer.

The event had a friendly, often lighthearted feel. LouAnne Reger, owner of J&L Steel Erectors, warmed up the crowd by talking of buying clothes, losing weight and getting divorced and remarried (more than once).

Cindy McCain continued the theme in introducing her husband. She said helping run a presidential campaign was a good way to lose 30 pounds, adding that the white slacks she was wearing were two sizes too large.

Some men's bathrooms in the J&L Steel facility were converted to ladies' rooms, forcing male volunteers to stand in line while the women's restrooms were wait-free.

Meanwhile Friday, the political arm of the National Association of Wholesaler-Distributors endorsed McCain. The group's chairman, Jim Risk, said Obama's policies "are contrary to business interests," mainly in the area of taxation.

"Obama just won the primary out of sheer luck. He is NOT a leader of this country by any means.

You don''t win an election by sheer luck. Either you win because people voted for you or because you got a big help from Diebold.

What''s McCain''s latest? Ah! He tells a Pennsylvania news reporter that upon being shot down over Hanoi, during his first interrogation he gave the names of the defensive line of the Steelers as his squadron mates. A lie. In his book and other interviews, it was the Green Bay Packers. For those of you who went through SERE, you see the real truth. He was painted as a reactionary and a liar during his first interrogation, which means he broke and told everything within a week or so. Another American hero created from BS.

According to McCain "smooth rhetoric bad ... outright lies good" ... neanderthal.

oh please. "So many" work for or run small businesses. I would like to see the stats supporting that and comparing it to how many work for large corporations.

All this guy can talk about is taxes. And then he has the nerver to claim he (the guy who was dating his current wife before elaving his first disabled wife and has called women very derogatory names) is the best candidate for women. Wow. That is one huge set of...

The Best choice is John McCain. The other choice is just nonsense. Obama just won the primary out of sheer luck. He is NOT a leader of this country by any means.

*In this time of crisis, we need the Best.

We need Experience. We need Hillary and Bill.

Under the Clinton administration, the average income went from $43,000 to $49,000 a year. The budget was balanced and inflation, including oil and gas prices, were kept in check.

We can still have Hillary.

It IS up to US. All we have to do is let it be known that Hillary backers are NOT going to vote for Obama under any condition. Thats all it takes. If we don''t play thier game with them, there is no game and the candidate that most Democrats cast their votes for in the Primary will be the next President of the United States.
Write in Hillary''s name on the November ballot. Call your local voting place,
(on your registration card) and find out if you have to do anything special to receive a write in ballot. In some states you have to be registered as an
Independent. Do this before October 1st.

REMEMBER!! Obama is just the "presumptive" Democratic Candidate. The Super

Delegates, who can change their votes right up until the last minute, can

still make Hillary Clinton the Democratic Candidate at the Democratic National

Convention in August.

LET THEM KNOW YOU WANT HILLARY!!!!!

Chrisl45 writes "In general, John McCain can give your children an education worth a lot of money in today''''s market. If they would only believe in and invest in the US''''s current stance on Iraq and Afghanistan it would be worth big bucks to them"

So like Dorothy being told by some strnge creature to "follow the yellow brick road" or Alice scurrying after a rabbit ... one is supposed to follow blindly this script for success. No ... someone is going to have to .... as they say ... "show me the money".

In general, John McCain can give your children an education worth a lot of money in today''s market. If they would only believe in and invest in the US''s current stance on Iraq and Afghanistan it would be worth big bucks to them. They will become a member of a large team, an excluse group, and get a ticket to the good life. All they have to do is make the correct choices just like many have before along their path to a better life. It''s a good way of life that I''m offering you, and a secret that you now know.

Imagine a sports commentator objecting to Tiger Woods golf game because his stroke was too good ... or Michael Jordan being criticized because his jumper went in too often ... wouldn''t happen you say.

Then what''s McCain''s criticism of Obama''s eloquence ... or the fact that he can fill a stadium ... or carries himself with a little class.

No because an opponent is better at representing himself his ideas and his country is not reason to consider McCain ... its reason not to.

Senator McCain''''s policies are geared toward helping the top 2% of the population, male or female. He cannot win on these issues with low and middle class women. To have an estate tax to worry about, a woman (or man) now has to die with $2,000,000.00 (two million dollars) in assets. That leaves out every woman I know personally. Who are the Republicans kidding?

Posted by ERoosevelt08,

The Republicans are just throwing BS out to divert attention from the fact that they have failed us with their misguided leadership. Do not be fooled.

The only agenda the GOP has is to line the pockets of their base or the elite and wipe out the middle class. The problem is there are more poor and middle class voters than the elite, so they need to lie and distort the facts or they would never win the election.

The best way to make up your mind is to use the events of the last 8 years to make your decision. If you are better off than you were under Clinton, vote for McCain. If not vote for Obama.
