(AP)  Canine cuisine is being sent to the doghouse during next month's Beijing Olympic Games.

Dog meat has been struck from the menus of officially designated Olympic restaurants, and Beijing tourism officials are telling other outlets to discourage consumers from ordering dishes made from dogs, the official Xinhua News Agency reported Friday.

Waiters and waitresses should "patiently" suggest other options to diners who order dog, it said, quoting city tourism bureau Vice Director Xiong Yumei.

Dog, known in Chinese as "xiangrou," or "fragrant meat," is eaten by some Chinese for its purported health-giving qualities.

Beijing isn't the first Olympic host to slap a ban on the dish.

South Korea banned dog meat during the 1988 Seoul Olympics by invoking a law prohibiting the sale of "foods deemed unsightly." After the Olympics, the ban was not strictly enforced.

Dog meat is also eaten in some other Asian countries, including Vietnam, the Philippines and Laos.

No dog on the menu for a while? That''s ruff? Eh, I just couldn''t resist. Guess it''s a dog''s life in China during the Olympics. [slap, slap] Okay I better stop this now and get some coffee.

Dog meat is considered the national food in South Korea. They banned it temporarily when they hosted the Olympics, concerned about what the rest of the world may think about their pet-eating habit. Since the Olympics is ''88, they eat dog meat daily. It is a staple, during every South Korean family gathering or festival.

I hope that in the future as the economy collapses and things get really bad, that America gets on an ''efficiency kick'' and recycling programs.

It would be nice if animal shelters turned healthy dog carcasses over to respective local sources for butchering, distribution, and consumption.

There are tons of perfectly good meat being thrown out everyday here in the U.S.. It''s terrible to let it go to waste---and not even save a ''doggy bag''s'' worth!

That last bit was for greygrrl. I''m signing off now
it''s taking too long to get my posts posted.

Just like cows, pigs and chickens here are considered a food source, in China and other countries, dogs and cats are considered a food source. Different doesn''t mean wrong, ignorant, backwards, disgusting or the like. Thinking it does though makes one wrong, ignorant and backwards.

You live in a big world, grow up and accept it --- your way isn''t the only way nor is it the "right way" for everyone!

The Chinese are some of the most humble, respectful people on this earth. They are different from us, therefore, they''''''''re bad - right? You guys really need to research and read up on the Chinese, their history, and their culture. You appear to know absolutely nothing about them.

Yeah right.
I know they multiply like rabbits (that''s wabbits in chineeeze).

They are known for violence.

Gweeeeeen?

If eating dogs is part of their culture it just shows that for a very long time China hasn''t been able to properly feed itself. In the West beef and chicken and pork have always been staples.

This is disgusting! As a person who has the good fortune to have 3 dogs in our family, anyone who would consider eating dog meat is sick! Have you ever seen the poor little dogs the Chinese eat? They are kept in undersized cages, look sad and miserable and pathetic. It''''s a shameful practice!

I''m sure that''s what people in India think about Americans eating cows.

Nothing wrong with eating dog.....I''''d love to try some.
Nothing should be off the menu.....animals are just that....animals. God says they are here for us to do with what we will.....we have dominion over all.....well that is clear enough to me......DINNERTIME!!

I have never commented before, but had to sign up in order to respond to the person who suggests that only humans have souls. I would not want to live in your world. What a sad view. I believe with absolute certainty that all living things have souls. Whether they do tricks or not. Whether they have thumbs or not. Those are hardly the standards of Holiness. Sacredness. All living things are Holy.

Does that mean the Chineses should not eat dogs? No. Living things eat other living things whether I like it or not. And I cannot object to that dynamic. All I can hope for is that the living things we consume had a chance to live with dignity first and to die as painlessly as possible.

I would never want to eat dog. Blecgh! Eew. Yucky. But I know that Asian cultures have different traditions.

By the way, if the ability to love in the way that most of us define love is what defines whether or not an entity has a soul (and therefor should be seen as food), then a great manyy of the men I have met should be eaten.
