US Airways says it will start removing in-flight entertainment systems on domestic flights in November to save about $10 million annually in fuel and other costs.
Spokesman Phil Gee says the movie systems weigh about 500 pounds each, forcing planes to use more fuel to get around the country.
Jet fuel costs have skyrocketed in recent years, slashing profits and leading to thousands of layoffs and flight cuts throughout the industry.
Gee says US Airways will cut the movie systems from about 200 aircraft. But it will keep movies in its widebody aircraft for international flights and trips to Hawaii.
US Airways says it will test a lighter, seat-back TV system later this year. However, Gee says a new entertainment system is a long way off.

- Saving 500 pounds on movies is nickel dime.

A few years ago Northwest said they weren''t painting their planes cause it save money on paint and fule.

- Watching a movie on an airline is NO WAY to watch a movie. Especially since they edit them to their standards. Take a portable DVD player (like I do) and view them that way if you must.

- We don''t need seats. We can stand on short flights and lie on big shelves on longer ones.
This just shows what clowns are running the airlines (into the ground). People aren''t freight. Treat people right and they will pay a fair price. - Reply to this comment

- Looks like the big guys are starting to finally act like AirTran and JetBlue. Never been on either, don''t fly much, but I understand they provide pleasant service, good fares, and basic pleasant flying.
If AirTran and JetBlue can get such high remarks on their method of service and be profitable when the big guys can''t seem to, why didn''t the big guys start modeling after them years ago.
Its corporate greed, not fuel prices that have continually run the big airlines into the ground. No pun intended there. - Reply to this comment
- Well, so much for flying US Airways anymore. If I cannot have in flight entertainment, I may as well fly southwest and REALLY save some money. I guess US Airways is on its way out now.

- And now the airlines are asking us, their customers, to lobby Congress for fuel price relief on their behalf. I''m sorry folks, but before I do anything nice for the airlines, they''re gonna have to treat me a whole lot better than they have been.

- Ho, HO, HO Block busters.
finally a moment to take a sigh of relief.
No more in flight wavy screens & untrained video delivery dudes trying to fix loose connections.
On the flip side,I''m wonder,if few smoker seats can be allowed as deprivation without entertainment will take away fun from flying.
Thanks for news,I''ll sleep tight tonight. - Reply to this comment
- Why would a movie system weight 500 pounds in this day and age, anyway? I can think of no good reason they would need to weigh more than 50.

- The people complain because it is their right to. Lets face it the airlines treat their customers like sh*t and we let them get away with it. They over charge us but high surcharges on everything and take away anything we may have that might allow us to actually enjoy our flight. hell i have seen elementary school bus drivers treat passengers better
