(AP)  Clayton County police say a daughter's refusal to stay in an arranged marriage led to her death and resulted in her father's arrest. The victim, 25-year-old Sandeela Kanwal, died of strangulation early Sunday.

Authorities allege that 54-year-old Chaudhry Rashid argued with his daughter, then choked her to death. The homicide occurred just after 3 a.m. at the family house in Jonesboro.

Rashid was placed in the Clayton County Jail. His first court appearance had been scheduled for Monday but was postponed until Tuesday.

At that proceeding, Chief Magistrate Daphne Walker learned Rashid's primary language is Urdu, according to The Atlanta Journal Constitution. Walker said an interpreter will be brought in to help with the judicial proceedings.

According to a police report, Kanwal was forced into an arranged marriage in Pakistan a few years ago. Police say Kanwal wanted to leave her husband, which angered her father.

Police say Kanwal's husband now lives in Chicago.

DaVicar2 - actually yes, however, you have just proven that prejudice and stupidity, like anger, are not racially nor mutually exclusive.

Acceptance and tolerance is universal -try it sometime, you might find that you are a much more pleasant person.

Give us your poor, your tired, your huddled religious Luddites. Another fine example of how all desert religions are at best, anti-woman, misogynistic and homophobic. And at worst outright dangerous. In the Bible, Lot "gave" his daughters to an angry mob to appease them. Desert religion is the most pervasive evil on the planet. Islam, Christianity, Judaism--they all believe this junk.

racist, anti-immigration - call it what you want.

The fact is - he killed her because she did not tow the line. Murder is NOT part of the practice of arranged marriages - EVER!! For him to tie it to "practice their colorful, rich traditions and customs?" was bogus and ignorant.

Be angry over the murder and the fact that morals are going down the drain in this country and it has nothing to do with immigration!

In Mexico, 45 year old men marry 13 year old girls.
So we should just accept that?
In many cultures around the world, men have multiple wives. Should we accept that here?
In Pakistan, if a business deal goes bad for one group, a person from that group can ask the tribal elder for permission to rape & beat a female member of the other group. If granted, the women gets raped & since he had permission, there is no crime. Should we accept that here in the US??

Chaudhry Rashid, 54, of Jonesboro, lives an Atlanta suburb. Go to CNN there is a picture of this guy.

I dont think he knew it was against the law to kill another person in the USA. Look at a picture of this guy it looks like he has some SERIOUS ANGER MANAGEMENT ISSUES.

All I wanted was to focus on the crime. Fry him and send his ashes back to Pakistan!

Does that make everyone happy? I am so sick of hatred and people being so judgemental.

Just for the record, Christianity does not teach violence. It teaches forgiveness and acceptance, and you really don''t understand it that much if you say otherwise. Unfortunately, there are always extremists in EVERY culture and religion who really just don''t get the point. And by the way, you can take any quote out of the Old Testament, and it will work one way or another in your favor. The book is to be read as a whole. Just wanted to correct your knowledge.

Hmmm...

Another sad part of this will be his prosecution. It will likely cost a couple of million dollars by the time all the appeals run their course, for the next several years.

If it was up to me I would have him kicked to death and deported to his home town.

Add to that the incarceration cost of about $100 per day, plus medical, dental and vision incidentals, and you can see how this piece of manure Rashid will become a BIG burden to the taxpayers - in our very civilized, non-Sharia society.

It would be better if he would concentrate on willing himself to die. Unfortunately, any man that would strangle his own daughter, does not have the b@lls to end his own life.

OK if you doubt the truth of god''s word in the old testament, how about some new testament horror stories:

Jesus criticizes the Jews for not killing their disobedient children as required by Old Testament law. (See Ex.21:15, Lev.20:9, Dt.21:18-21) 7:9-10

Jesus says that he has come to destroy families by making family members hate each other. He has "come not to send peace, but a sword." Matthew 10:34-36

Brother shall deliver up the brother to death, and the father the child: and the children shall rise up against their parents, and cause them to be put to death. Matthew 10:21

Sounds just like the preachings of Islam and Judaism to me.

Now if you want to pick and choose which ridiculous fairy story you want to believe, that''s your ignorance, not mine.

I stand by my opinion that ALL desert religions are incompatible with modern thought and morals.

So, who among us hasn''t wanted to strangle his daughter at one time or another? Lord knows I have. You can''t do it legally unless you belong to certain religions. Didn''t this guy belong to a religion where you''re allowed to? No matter , the way our political system is headed we will live in a Theocracy before long and it will be legal then ''cause God''s law will override all the others. Then we can spiral into the abyss fighting over which God has the supreme law.......

Ok, dacmqc-dinijahd , what are you smoking? Uh, let''s see: Inquisition , crusades, Rev. wright, Holocaust (Nazis were catholics- I think ). Read the bible. Jesus is coming with a SWORD. A terrible swift sword my dear Christian soldier. One reason Christians, along with all the rest, are violent is because they are people and people are violent. Can''t escape it.

Yep,our lawmakers keep changing our laws, to suit the immigrants. I dont understand how these people can come here and expect to live by the laws of the land they ran from. I am sick of having to ''tolerate'' people who come here and then expect us to accept them for who they are, and expect Americans to change, fight to change our laws to resemble, or be exact to ones of the countries they fled. Being female, I have been confronted, and had men from middle eastern coutries attempt to intimidate me, and call me names, for not bowing down to them. But as an American, I am forced into being polite, or I can be arrested for being racial. We need to start reining in on so many changes, because on far too many levels, the culteral clashes are putting too many people in alot of unneccesary danger, and causing the hate. We as Americans have our own culture, and deserve just as much respect, but dont get it. Either accept the American laws and way of life, or go back to where you came from. This man should be in the express lane to the needle. Some of these cultures would have required her brothers to kill her. Some still mutilate a young girls private parts, and other horrible things. Live here, live and respect us and our laws. If they want there own culture, go back to where ever they came from.

WTH??

Christian Identity has been associated with founders of the Aryan Republican Army (ARA), a paramilitary gang which has been connected to hate fueled terrorist attacks involving train derailments, assassinations, bombings and a string of professionally executed armed bank robberies planned to finance an overthrow of the US Federal government.

Identity Christianity asserts that disease, addiction, cancer, and sexual venereal disease (herpes and AIDS) are spread by human rodents via contact with unclean persons, such as through "race-mixing".

In 2001, at the height of the United States anthrax scare, more than 170 abortion clinics and doctors offices in 14 states received letters containing white powder and the message "You have been exposed to anthrax. We are going to kill all of you. Army of God, Virginia DARE Chapter.

Aryan Nations followers admire Adolf Hitler and claim that minority group members are "mud people" and spawns of Satan. Aryan Nations doctrine follows that of Christian Identity which claims that Jews are satanic, blacks are subhuman.

The Ku Klux Klan - Christian theology; They have often used terrorism, violence, and acts of intimidation and murder, such as cross burning and lynching, to oppress African Americans and other social or ethnic groups.

This is America, you should never have to be polite ro someone who is rude to you.If i were to see someone treating you like that i would straighten them out very quickly. I was brought up to show respect for a lady. I consider them equal, you can do some things beter than men and men can do some things better than women. It is a difference to be respected.

Right. The Muslims are just a bunch of happy-go-lucky, wild and crazy guys. Party animals is what they are, always joking around, clowning, laughing at life and themselves. They laugh the hardest when they behead someone or beat a woman to death, in the name of Allah. They''re just fun-lovin, good-timin'' folks. Why can''t the world see that?

Sistatee: Of course your over the top generalization is ridiculous. There are narrow-minded zealots in all groups. Sound familiar? Certainly, there are Muslims who want to murder Americans. Does it follow all Muslims feel this way? Would you want the world to think you are the same as Charles Manson, or Ted Bundy, or Jeffrey Dahmer? I hope not. I know I am different from these animals. But, they received and still receive an enormous amount of media attention. They are/were still Americans. Again, does that mean we are all like them? I know the answer for me. I am not so sure for you. If you are able, think about it.

Well, thanks to Kanwal''s stupid, crazy father--she has indeed left her husband--FOREVER and now her crazy father will be leaving his wife...bet they never taught the ramifications of applying old country rules to living in America. Why was he so angry? Too much money involved with the families to allow her to go? If Urdu was the language and not Hindi--odds are very high we just witnessed a Pakistani enraged dad who thought his word and the old country rules was law.

Now you go to Prison Rashid. Welcome to our version of "the law"

Nope--Lot tried to give his girls to the mob to prevent them from raping the 2 angels that God sent. But the crowd was so corrupted and deviant, that only raping the men was an option, so they turned Lot down--ironic isn''t it, that right after that little episode, Lot''s girls got their dad drunk and fvcked him eh? Maybe giving them to the crowd would have been the less of 2 evils since they seemed to be hornnny as hell and turned to incest by trickery instead.

I know a lot of Muslims and have Pakistanis in my family. They do not condone the terrorism per se, but they also are not on the side of the US when it comes to how we deal with terrorists. When we have get togethers, the most reviled comments are reserved for the US and what we are doing in the ME--esp. Iraq. If you think Pakistanis are sympathetic to Americans in the how we are prosecuting this war--then you don''t personally and intimately know anything about them. Their hatred of Israel is as rabid as is many others in the Arabic speaking world.

In Pakistan, Fathers or other males have the right to kill female relatives with no repercussions if they do not obey, if they dishonor the family, if they are defiled (even through rape). All over India and to a lesser extent in Pakistan, females are SOLD into sexual slavery and in poor families, young males are also sold for sexxxx, becoming houris that live in certain groups and cater to the homosexual needs of the married men. It is not uncommon for Pakistani men to use boys under 12 for sexxxx in lieu of obtaining another wife. This is known. It is also known that girls are considered a burden and yes, Pakistanis also practice dowry and bride price--and they do still believe in the right of families to "cleanse" their own clan through murder if the father thinks it is right. I am good friends to a girl who was to be killed at the age of 5 because her grandfather molested her--she was spared when another relative offered to adopt her and took her to the US.
