(AP)  The U.S. military said airstrikes by its attack helicopters hit two vehicles carrying insurgents in eastern Afghanistan. The province's governor said 22 civilians, including a woman and a child, were killed.

A spokesman for the U.S.-led coalition said Friday the airstrikes in Nuristan province hit militants who earlier attacked a U.S. military base with mortars.

The helicopters identified the militants' firing positions, tracked them down and destroyed the vehicles they were traveling in, said 1st Lt. Nathan Perry.

"These were combatants. These were people who were firing on us," Perry said. "We have no reports of noncombatant injuries."

He gave no account of casualties in the vehicles.

Nuristan's Gov. Tamim Nuristani said, however, 22 civilians were killed in the Waygal district of Nuristan province. "This afternoon (Friday), two civilian vehicles were hit by airstrikes," Nuristani said over the phone.

Among those killed were a woman and a child. All 22 dead bodies were brought to a provincial hospital, Nuristani said. Seven other people were wounded.

"Last night, the opposition fired rockets at the (U.S.) base ... and today this incident happened," said Nuristani, speaking from Kabul.

The military base is 6 miles away from the place where the airstrikes happened, Nuristani said.

It was impossible to independently verify any of the claims because of the remoteness of the area.

In other violence, gunmen lobbed a grenade and sprayed a police checkpoint with gunfire in the southern Kandahar province, killing eight officers, said provincial police chief Sumanwal Matiullah.

Overall, more than 8,000 people were killed in insurgency-related attacks in Afghanistan last year - the most since the 2001 U.S.-led invasion. Violence has claimed more than 2,100 lives so far this year.

And the extermination continues............

More than a year and half before 911 the CIA Special Activities Division was conducting operations in Afghanistan, trying to topple the Taliban regime for the Caspian Sea Oil & Gas Pipelines...........We now call such activities terror.

February 12, 1998 John J. Maresca vp of UNOCAL oil appeared before a House sub committee. The purpose of the meeting was to gain support for exploitation of oil & natural gas resources, for the rights purchased by BIG OIL in the Caspian Sea area.

In his testimony he stated, "The key question is how the energy resources of Central Asia can be made available to nearby Asian markets ".

The exploitation option stated : "One obvious route south would cross Iran, but this is foreclosed by American companies because of U.S. sanctions (with Iran ) .
The only other possible route is across Afghanistan, which of course has it''s own unique challenges. " He continued saying, " the pipeline we have proposed across Afghanistan could not begin until a recognized government is in place that has the confidence of governments, lenders (world monitary fund & world bank ) ,and our company "......"

UNOCAL and other American companies are prepared to undertake the job ".

The province''s governor said 22 civilians, including a woman and a child, were killed.

Why yes, I''m gullible enough to believe the province''s governor. After all he lives there and is provided protection & payment by ....... Nato. Right??

The civilians were just forced to go along to cover the story for Nato. Right again??

Me speakum truth - No Taliban or Militant here! I just smokum the opium. Lot to do as province''s governor.

The US has the most wonderful weapons. Our bombs and missiles only kill terrorists, insurgents, and militants. They never kill innocent civilians. If you don''t believe it, just ask any government mouthpiece, and they will confirm it.

Bin Laden is a war criminal. He has successfully murdered thousands of rank and file Arabs. Bin Laden lives for self-glorification, greed, and tyranny. The Coalition should capture him to end the torture, rape, and propaganda. There is no reason to respect him as the enemy leader.

This amazing comment "There is no reason to respect him (OBL) as the enemy leader.".

I agree, You take him if you can get him.
But,for heavens sake, get the hell out of Iraq,Afghanistan & Gaza.

You can''t keep on putting stickers on dead bodies,as Alqaida or Fallen solder.

It is too pathetic to kill human beings, while your arse is in the air.

Afghan or Iraqi occupation by US & Coalition forces is inhuman, against international Charters of WAR.

But, Canadian forces have a choice.Either read LOAC & stay under oath to its 2005 Edition by Directorate of Law Training. For practical reason if its not possible to stick to book of War, it is your responsibility to know what "Never again" stands for.

All Islamic countries have a high birth rate. High birth rate leads to poverty. Poverty leads to violence. Violence leads to retaliation. Al Queada is recruiting children so they encourage a high birth rate. All civilians are considered to be soldiers in Allah''s army. Women and children can be used as weapons.

Absolutely- If they think as you do and support the current regime. It is corrupt and should be brought up on war crime charges and people like you should be incarcerated for lending support to it. Is that clear enough, even for you?

Osama Bin Laden is dedicated to death dealing. Taliban are routinely executed by his Guard. If not, they are blindly sent against Pakistani and Coalition guns. Bin Laden resorts to any method of reducing rank and file Arabs. He claims immortality and omnipotence. Taliban have every reason to reject Bin Laden''s despotism.

George W. Bush received a good graft payment today from the Saudis. They insist that the price for a barrel of oil will reach $200. Bush is the most bribed public official in this country''s history. After he leaves office, Congress will be free to investigate his felonious activities.

The Caspian Sea pipeline which will go through Turkmenistan, Afghanistan,Pakistan, to the gulf of Oman and on to India & Nepal.

It will be cheaper to construct if they can go through Iran, but regime change is necessary first. The Caspian sea area holds one third of the world''s oil and south asian oil markets are their target market.

This pipeline was also the reason for the Afghanistan invasion.

Cheney''s energy policy is the root of all these middle east wars, a federal court judge sealed all documents associated with it for the administration.
