The State Department had some explaining to do to the top three presidential candidates after it was revealed that their passport files had been breached. Jim Axelrod reports.

Under Secretary of State for Management Patrick Kennedy met with lawmakers and said that the State Department is investigating the passport breach of the presidential candidates.

  • Video Need A Passport? Get In Line

New rules requiring Americans to show passports for flights to neighboring countries have spurred a surge in passport applications and long lines at processing centers. Nancy Cordes reports.

(CBS)  CBS News Investigative producer Laura Strickler wrote this story for CBSNews.com.

Nine “high profile” passport files were accessed more than a hundred times according to a new report from the State Department's Inspector General. Officials will not reveal the list of "high profile" individuals whose passports were repeatedly accessed but CBS News has learned that one of the most frequently accessed files was that of musician Beyonce Knowles.

The authors of the report took a sample list of 150 celebrities and found 127 files were accessed a total of 4,148 times in a six year period. One high profile individual’s passport file was accessed 356 times by 77 different users. The report says it did not determine if those who accessed the passport files were authorized to do so.

The Inspector General’s report indicated the agency’s oversight of passport files had “many control weaknesses including a general lack of policies, procedures, guidance, and training". The agency was also criticized for having no standardized response or disciplinary process for employees who breach personal files.

This spring, news broke that the passport files of presidential candidates such as Senator Barack Obama (D-Il), Senator John McCain (R-Ariz) and Senator Hillary Clinton (D-New York) had been accessed by contractors for the State Department. In response, the Inspector General for the State Department examined how often celebrity files were accessed.

Over 20,000 federal employees and government contractors have access to 127 million passport files.

The State Department agreed with 19 of the Inspector General’s 22 recommendations.

Strange, that Republicans can''t seem to put two and two together...

Don''t forget that it was previously OBAMA campaign staffers who were attempting to see what was in his records. I wonder why? Are they afraid of what might be there?

And SECURITY is the issue RepubliCONS'' say is their STRENGTH!? They''ve got to be kidding us, or rather themselves! Since, we have seen absolutely no sign of any expertise on that issue from this administration!

Au contraire, their ''goof ups'' are legion! From open borders, to open ports, to test bombs being snuck into the country, to most govt depts pcs being broken into, to misrouted warheads, to missing nukes, to govt labs broken into, to missing intel, to two years of missing White House emails (wink), on and on and on! And now, more passport breaches! Holy cow!

What security?! This administration absolutely stinks when it comes to this issue. It''s pathetic! The security is so lax, you''re left wondering if it isn''t the intent of the current administration to purposively undermine the U.S. in order to set us up for some future attack!?

Another piece of Republican disinformation. Have the honesty to do your homework before you post statements about a candidate.

The Truth:
One of the contract workers who accessed the information worked for Analysis Corp. The CEO of Analysis Corp. contributed to the Obama campaign. No Obama staffers were involved in the incidents.

The other two contract workers were employed by Stanley, Inc. The CEO of Stanley made contributions to numerous prominent Republican candidates, and also $1,000 to Hillary Clinton''s Presidential campaign.

Hey "shaded" truthmatterz. Quite a few politicians and pundits are missing from your selective list. Wonder why? How about a few of the top Senate liberals: Barack Obama, Chuck Schumer, Harry Reid, Joe Biden, Robert Byrd and Russ Feingold to name a few. Oh and how could you have not included Bill Maher and Al Franken in your pundit grouping? I''ll let Alan Colmes slide since he is on Fox.

Someone accessing records they have permissions to access is not a news story. If anything, this is about the government''s failure to protect information properly.

I used to be a contractor for a government agency and was treated as less than a second-class citizen, but did all the work the other government employees wouldn''t bother to do.

In four years of active service the only Republicans I ever met were commissioned officers.

Bush: Dangerous Gitmo Detainees Could Walk US Streets After Supreme Court Ruling

DEB RIECHMANN | July 3, 2008 11:39 PM EST | AP

WASHINGTON %u2014 The White House said Thursday that dangerous detainees at Guantanamo Bay could end up walking Main Street U.S.A. as a result of last month''s Supreme Court ruling about detainees'' legal rights. Federal appeals courts, however, have indicated they have no intention of letting that happen.

Isn''t it about time (campaign season) for some ''TERROR ALERTS!!!'' Do you recall the last one?

History Lesson:

Here are just a few (4-months worth) of terror alerts that were issued leading up to the 2004 election. Amazing coincidence, pretty much all were issued at the same time negative news was being reported on the Bush Gang:

McCain divorced his first wife on her proverbial sickbed. What kind of person divorces the woman who waited for him to return from the war, and concealed her own life-threatening car crash injuries for his benefit? McCain married his current millionaire heiress beer-distributor wife, 17 years his junior, one month after dumping Carol Shepp McCain, who, as Sen. McCain so gallantly put it, "was on crutches and had gained quite a bit of weight."

"In his book, The Nightingale''s Song, Robert Timberg chronicled McCain''s post-Vietnam military assignments and some of his "adulterous" behavior leading to his divorce from Carol and marriage to Cindy Hensley. "

"While Executive Officer and later as Squadron Commander McCain used his authority to arrange frequent flights that allowed him to carouse with subordinates and "engage in extra-marital affairs." Such behavior was a violation of the Uniform Code of Military Justice rules against adultery and fraternization with subordinates... "

You can read the whole sad story here.

I don''t know how any woman could vote for this two timer and still look in the mirror every morning.

This time, instead of voting against abortion and gay marriage, and for prayer and guns (these issues will never go away) -- vote for your wallet , vote for the economy, vote for the environment, vote for jobs.
