Officials said Monday a trust controlled by the multimillionaire wife of Republican presidential hopeful John McCain had initiated payment on $1,743 owed in property taxes on a condominium in the tony La Jolla Shores area.
The payment, due in April, was scheduled to default Tuesday.
"You can reasonably assume that it is paid," San Diego County Treasurer-Tax Collector Dan McAllister said Monday.
Additional bills totaling $6,744 for the years 2004 through 2007 were paid by the trust on Friday after Newsweek magazine questioned why the trust had fallen into arrears on the two-bedroom, two-bath oceanfront property, McAllister said.
Jeff Olson, division chief of assessment services for San Diego County, said the post office returned tax statements for those years sent to an incorrect mailing address in Phoenix, where Cindy McCain's trusts are registered.
No address change was recorded after the condominium deed was transferred from another family trust in 2002, Olson said.
Brian Rogers, a spokesman for McCain's campaign, said Monday there would be no comment beyond what Newsweek had reported.
The Arizona senator's wife disclosed in May that she had a total income of more than $6 million in 2006.
Heiress to a large Arizona beer distributorship, Cindy McCain's worth has been estimated at more than $100 million. Her assets, as listed in her husband's financial disclosure forms, are vast. But those forms only require assets to be listed in broad ranges, and many of hers are valued at simply "over $1 million."

McCain''s first wife stood by and waited for him while he was a POW. She ended up handicapped and stayed by his side when he returned home. He repaid her by having an affair with Cindy and dumping his first wife and kids for her. Essentially, McCain follows in the rich tradition of wife swapping and humiliation as practiced by Rudy Guiliani, Newt Gingrich, et al. i.e. fvcking over the first wife and then dumping her and marrying their fvck partner. The Republicans are intent on us putting SOMEONE''S FORMER MISTRESS into the white house. If not Rudy and Judy, Then McCain and the wife he publicly calls a trollop and ****. - Reply to this comment

Further proof of two America''''s, those who work and pay taxes. Those that are worth 100 million and don''''t worry about trivial things such as taxes.... If it was going into default, what happened to the interest owed?????

Not only that, but I used to live in San Diego and worked in La Jolla. In 1984, the cheapest home in La Jolla was almost a million dollars and by 1989 you could not get any condo not even a closet for less than 750K. It is considered one of the most expensive areas in the world to live in. Given that, how in the hell could they have a 2 bdrm condo with taxes of only 1,700 dollars in ANY year? Property taxes in Chula Vista on a 2 bdrm condo were over 3K in 1984!!!!!
Guess, if you have enough money, you don''t have to pay for stuff like the rest of us--wouldn''t be surprised if the rich are getting their gas for free, now. - Reply to this comment
- Hundreds of millions of dollars to their name and too lazy and stingy to pay a couple of thousand dollars--how much to bet, if this had been the average Joe--the property would have been auctioned off for the back taxes by now? Elitism at its finest. LMAO
