The New York Post and Newsday say 20-year-old Ruslana Korshunova died Saturday afternoon in the Financial District. The newspapers cited unnamed officials and police.
The medical examiner's office later announced that her death was ruled a suicide.
Korushnova's New York agency and a spokeswoman for medical examiners did not immediately return telephone messages.
Originally from the former Soviet republic of Kazakhstan, the almond-eyed, flowing-haired Korshunova appeared in advertisements and on runways for such designers as Marc Jacobs, Nina Ricci and DKNY.
British Vogue hailed her as "a face to be excited about" in 2005.
Her break came when modeling booker Debbie Jones noticed her while perusing an in-flight magazine article about Korushnova's hometown of Almaty, according to the Vogue report.
She looked like something out of a fairytale!" Jones told the magazine. "We had to find her and we searched high and low until we did!"

- I find it hard to believe that this was a suicide. Maybe one of her customers got mad about something and just snapped.

She didn''t just -mentally- go over the edge! - Reply to this comment
- Im not going to say much We likely will never know the reasons but as far as the uncaring cynical comments welcome to June 29 2008. There are reasons for that. People are being beat into the ground. No jobs cant afford food cant afford to get to work if there is a job violence running wild as more of the country heads towards poverty with no end in sight and a few dozen other reasons. More and more people just dont care about anyone anymore. I did not say everybody just more every day Very much like entertainment too many like Rome in its final years all it took was a thumb up or down. Depression is a real and serious condition so the drug companies make the drugs to help some of the most expensive to buy. She had the money but either did not seek help or a type of pill did not work so well. It can take awhile to find one that works for a person. They dont work the same for everybody. And we do not know what caused her to jump maybe she was pushed who knows

- What an exotically beautiful young woman. She had a huge career ahead. What a terrible shame. God Be With Her.

- Ego and beauty can breed a self centered personality and create a fragile personality. It''s hard to say the reason but it is a real shame that a young lady with a real future had such fragility in character.
Those that have never had to deal with the hard knocks and reality of life that serious issues such bad health or death of family members can cause are often the most easily crushed.
It could have been something relatively serious that caused her to go mentally over the edge. Too bad that people can''t press the snooze button during such traumatic experiences, because it will always look better tomorrow. - Reply to this comment
