Statistics and specifics on crime in America.

(CBS/ AP)  Authorities say an inmate raped and murdered a female corrections officer at a Daytona Beach prison.

The Department of Corrections reports that Enoch Hall attacked Officer Donna Fitzgerald Wednesday night while she was on duty at the Tomoka Correctional Institution. The Port Orange woman had worked at the prison for 13 years.

WESH-TV in Orlando reported that Fitzgerald, 50, discovered Hall hiding in a warehouse area of the prison after lights-out on Wednesday night. The inmate then attacked her.

State prison records show that Hall, 39, is already serving two life sentences for sexual battery with a weapon and kidnapping convictions from a 1993 case.

"Words cannot express the sorrow I feel over the loss of our correctional officer," said Department of Corrections Secretary Walter McNeil. "The entire department grieves the murder of one of our finest officers, and we pray for the victim's family during this difficult time."

The Florida Department of Law Enforcement is investigating the attack. No charges have been filed

Pretty easy way to make sure this never happens again with this inmate. He did it, no questions asked, FRY HIM!

Well, I''m not from Florida, but I believe this is a death sentence offense! So, after his trial, he''ll probably be moved to ''death row''!

They should arrange for him to be in the yard when the Aryans get recess.

Law enforcement and corrections personnel get paid very little to endure and risk so much. These inmates are not "fixable." Euthanasia would be kind.

How many innocent people does a murderer have to kill before he receives the dealth penalty? If you kill someone you should be killed, no questions asked. If you kill a child you should be tortured and then killed. The courts/jury/judges etc. who feel the murderers should receive "help" for their problems . . . I wonder if their family member was the one murdered, whould they feel the same way? I very much doubt it!!

I''d like to think that some day, our country will make it to the boiling point, and we''ll start exterminating these type of criminals in mass quantities.

This is incredibly sad.

We need to be able to revoke human status and declare people like this an unredeemable animal and euthanize them.

Keeping them alive is simply like trying to store chemical weapons. Eventually their safety container will leak and we don''t want them around anyway.

ANOTHER EXAMPLE OF WHY WOMEN SHOULD NOT HAVE A MANS JOB. THIS IS A VERY SAD THING, BUT WOMEN SHOULD NOT BE ALLOWED TO HAVE A MANS JOB SUCH AS THIS ONE, A POLICE OFFICER, OR IN THE MILITARY FIGHTING IN A WAR. THIS WOMENS EQUALITY IS FOR THE BIRDS. WOMEN ARE NOT EQUAL TO MEN...AND NO I AM NOT A MAN. I AM A WOMAN.

Words cannot express how STUPID it is to put female corrections officers in MALE prisons.

I do not understand why he is not brought out to the town common for a public beheading with a rusty axe.

There is NO "Justice" system in this country...it''s a pathetic joke.

I often wonder why we are suppose to feel safe when I see a woman or runt sized male cop drive by in a squad car to.
Guess we can''t discriminate against those who can''t defend themselves or anyone else though.

"People who claim that sentencing a murderer to "life without the possibility of parole" protects society just as well as the death penalty ignore three things: (1) life without the possibility of parole does not mean life without the possibility of escape or (2) life without the possibility of killing while in prison or (3) life without the possibility of a liberal governor being elected and issuing a pardon."
---Thomas Sowell

Note #2 above: had our society had the guts and brains to execute people for crimes such as rape and kidnapping, this guard would be alive today.

Oh, common on, I''m sure he is just misunderstood. We should get him counceling and reintroduce him to society as soon as possible. Why I think incarceration is "Cruel and Unusual" punishment and should be outlawed!

Obviously his incarceration is "good" for society, we have now lost ANOTHER tax paying productive citizen so we can continue to provide a free ride on the public dole to another drege of society.

Scum like this convict think that, just because they are in prison for life, they have nothing to lose by raping and killing. I mean, what can we really do to him now? He knew exactly what he was doing, and he had to know he''d get caught. It''s too bad we don''t have some way of inflicting pain on people like this as punishment. If a convict KNEW that if he attacked a guard that wer''e going to strap him to a fire-ant hill for 48 hours, he might be deterred from doing a crime in prison. Just my 2 cents.

It''s sad that rape and murder exists regardless of race. I pray for the family of the officer and the many blacks that have been raped and kill as well as well as the Asians, Hispanics, Iraqians, etc.

So, the guy was hiding in a warehouse area of the prison when she discovered him after lights out? This sounds like an incompetent prison system. And, I agree with many of you, having non-partnered female guards around convicted sexually violent men is about as stupid as it gets.

The real problem here is the insanity of a woman working in a male prison facility is trouble looking for a place to happen! This whole situation is tragic, but not unexpected, one can research and find many cases of this same such activity, female prison guards being raped, murdered, and one can even find cases of female prison guards getting romantically involved and helping inmates escape, some quite notorious cases are in recent history. I am sure the women groups for womens rights equality will be in a uproar if women were prohibited from working in male prisons, but if women wish to act like men, go where men go they will have to expect these unfortunate results, in future wars, we will have many women soldiers captured, and unlike their male counter parts, will be raped, bear children as result, all for the sake of equality, it is pure insanity to think women should be like men, in all things, in fact its quite ungodly, am sure my views will be judged as male chavunistic, but hate me if you wish but if women worked in women prisons, and men worked in mens prisons this lady would be undoubtedly alive today, with her kids and family, but for the sake of equality she is now dead, and only hue and cry is for blood lust for her killer, which even if he gets the death penalty will take decades and who knows if he will kill another female guard! Insanity is when womens equal rights is taken to levels of foolishness!

Whats wrong with you guys?
Stop the knee jerk reaction.
Jail is de-humanising to both inmate and keeper.
SSs (stop the shrill statements)
Engage in reasonable discourse. Something is wrong, very wrong, unless of course you are the problem.

We know not the extent of abuse, or we ignore it, to strip one naked in a glass cage (HBO series) and not expect gharib and its sanitized gitmo is the height os self incriminating hypocrisy ( no 5th amendment needed).

I''m real tired of the moronic death penalty/no death penalty argument. Both result in pampering murderers. In fact, for the murderer, the death penalty is the easiest way out while life in prison isn''t such a bad deal either.

So you''re all wrong. Wrong in every way. The answer is to jail ''em for life with special circumstances, and ensure that the life sentence is reasonably short...maybe 10 years if they''re young and healthy enough to last that long.

The jail time would be in a super-maximum facility where the prisoners are kept in total isolation and complete darkness without the ability to communicate with each other or with the outside world in any way. They would be fed ''food'' which would not just taste and smell real bad but would also have very low nutritional value. No medical or dental care would be provided and the only ''shower'' would be a weekly hosing down with a strong disinfectant. They would be required to submit to disabling physical torture (just short of death) on a regular basis during which the only thing that would end any specific session would be an admission of guilt coupled with begging for forgiveness.

Anything less does not do them justice - at all - but certainly constitutes cruel and unusual punishment of their victims.

Sure, let him off easy. That''s a good answer. If he wants to die bad enough that he kills a guard we just give him what he wants. Yeah, that solves the problem.

Use your head. He needs to be made to feel extreme pain...ALL THE TIME. He has to be completely isolated and literally kept in darkness, all the time. He needs to be fed stinking garbage. And he needs to know it will NEVER stop, at least for many years.

It''s the best thing we can do for him.

This piece of trash deserves to be executed, slowly. He had nothing to lose, so what is another life to him anyway? Life in prison is too merciful and decent for him. The taxpayers and the victims deserve justice and allowing him to live isn''t justice at all.

The death penalty is a deterrent, so long as it''s implemented as intended. Our system cares too much about the criminal and absolutely nothing about the victims, which is why trash like this gets away with committing these types of heinous crimes. Liberal bleeding-hearts are the cause. Ooo, we must have compassion for these losers and be nicey-nice to them.

Very sloppy prison control by the warden, their procedures, and their staff ... someone needs to be held accountable ... the inmates absence should have been seen and lock-down instituted immediately.
