(AP)  An Israeli police officer fatally shot himself Tuesday at an airport departure ceremony for French President Nicolas Sarkozy, sparking fear of an assassination attempt and prompting bodyguards to whisk away Sarkozy and Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert, officials said.

Police spokesman Micky Rosenfeld said there had been no assassination attempt on the French leader.

Another police official said the shooting was a suicide, while a third said it may have been accidental.

Dark-suited men quickly ushered Sarkozy and his wife up the stairs of their plane. At the same time, security guards with guns drawn rushed Olmert and Israeli President Shimon Peres toward their cars.

Sarkozy's wife, Carla Bruni-Sarkozy, rushed up the stairs ahead of her husband.

The shooting occurred while a military band was playing, and the leaders apparently didn't hear anything.

The incident was over within minutes, and Olmert boarded the plane to inform Sarkozy what had transpired, witnesses said.

Police spokesman Shlomi Sagi confirmed that a policeman guarding the airport committed suicide just as Sarkozy was about to board his plane.

Officials said he shot himself in the head.

The area police commander, Nissim Mor, said police were looking into the incident.

"We are currently investigating the circumstances to see whether it was suicide or if he accidentally discharged his weapon," he said. "His mission was to secure an area to prevent people from reaching the ceremony."

Sarkozy's three-day trip to Israel was meant to improve relations between the two countries.

French presidential spokesman Franck Louvrier could not be reached for comment on his mobile phone. Another presidential spokesman who was on a separate scheduled flight out of Tel Aviv said he knew nothing about the incident.

As long as the Liberal Media continue to play up these cowardly acts, this action will continue to grow like a virus. Just as sports televeision does not broadcast people running onto the filed, then stupid acts such as this should not be glorified with media attention.

My response:
Others would say, that as long as fascist, neocon conservative leaders around the world continue to act aggressively to violate, dominate, and harass peoples of other sovereign nations, that it will foster continued acts of violence in response!

The media can choose to obediently not report these events, but eventually word of them WILL leak out!
If they choose not to report them, they undercut their own ''reason to be''! And surely, there will come a point in time where they will have little or no credibility left!

Don''t know if it''s because she''s French, or the First Lady, but she was the first one out the door.

If I was an Israeli soldier, I''d probably eat a bullet too.

Really, how could anyone live with themselves, knowing what pain and anguish they''ve afflicted on people, strictly because of their religious preferences or ethnicity?

Perhaps it''s guilt, for the way they treat the Palestinian people.

Both sides of the Israeli/Arab conflict are uncivilized savages. Any country outside of the US are violent animals. At least this guy just killed himself instead of the savage Arabs who take out a bunch of people with them.

cdfoxtrot and hungry1968, you don''t really think that people from this tiny little country of only about 8 million people of which only about 5 million are Jewish would try to inflame the trillions of Muslims around them do you.. they would have to be stark crazy to do it deliberately so if we think for ourselves then we can only come to one conclusion, that maybe they are just trying to protect their people, please guys look up.. "Israel Size Comparison Maps"'' as people commonly perceive Israel to be much larger than it really is, Israel is only the size of lake Michigan.. They have countries with trillions of Muslims in them which surround Israel, countries like Syria, Iraq, Jordan, Kuwait, Egypt, Saudi Arabia, Sudan, Libya etc, all camped around them, so no one in their right mind would inflame these trillions who want them dead and gone would they???
Just as Americans took over the land that the Indians had, so did Mohammad drive the Jewish from their lands killing and raping as they went, Mohammad skited that he had taken land from the jews and chased them off their land taking all that they had possesed, and then in 1948 the Jews took over the lands of the Arabs. Much of it was brought and at the time the Arabs were only tooo happy to sell their land to the Jews, as the Arabs thought it was rubbish barren land anyway..

-Israeli Zionism is not digesting well... IDF Soldiers kill themselves! This event has not cleared the way from an Assissination Attempt. Sarkozy himself is a hidden Zionist, but he needs to reflect his government''s position which cannot be blindly one-sided with Israel.

There are several possibilities here and suicide is the least likely. Assassination attempt on Olmert...most likely...was he the shooter or killed defending? Attempt on Sarkozy...shooter or killed defending? We will not likely know the answer, but most of the reaction here is not very informative or imaginative. A good spy novelist couldn''t have written a better plot...no one would believe it! Cops and Soldiers don''t commit public suicide as a rule. It''s odd. But we are likely to never know the real facts unless we read the novel -- soon to be published and found on-line or in a book store near you!
