NY Mayor: Jews Must Condemn Obama Rumors

By
CBSNews
(CBS/ AP)  Mayor Michael Bloomberg urged Jewish voters to denounce the whisper campaign that for months has pushed the false rumor that Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama is secretly a Muslim.

Bloomberg, mentioned as a possible vice presidential candidate for both parties, warned a Jewish group in Boca Raton, Fla., on Friday that the attempt to portray Obama as a shadowy Muslim with a hidden agenda often targets Jewish voters online and with e-mails.

The deceptive campaign against Obama, who is Christian, "threatens to undo the enormous strides that Jews and Muslims have made together in this country," the New York mayor said.

The lies are "cloaked in concern for Israel, but the real concern is about partisan politics," said Bloomberg, who is Jewish. "This is wedge politics at its worst, and we've got to reject it - loudly, clearly and unequivocally."

Bloomberg, a billionaire independent, had considered making his own run for the White House this year, but decided against it. He has said his endorsement and potential financial backing could still be up for grabs, and there has been occasional chatter about how the Democrat-turned-Republican-turned independent might make a good running mate for either Obama or Republican John McCain.

"Bloomberg has held several high-profile meetings and events with Obama throughout this campaign," said CBSNews.com senior political editor Vaughn Ververs. "His defense could help ease concerns among Jewish voters and he's someone who is seen as a potential running mate. This can't hurt those prospects."

Bloomberg's passionate defense of Obama in front of a Jewish audience in Florida could help the Illinois senator in the state, which is home to many Jewish voters. He made the remarks while Obama was on a separate, two-day campaign swing through Florida, with stops in Jacksonville and Miami.

Some have questioned Obama's commitment to Israel; this stems partly from his stated willingness to talk with leaders of rogue nations, which McCain and others have criticized as a sign he underestimates the threat posed to Israel by Iran and others in the Middle East.

There is also uneasiness about Obama among some Jewish people because his former church pastor has praised black Muslim leader Louis Farrakhan, who has made anti-Semitic remarks. Obama has disavowed his pastor and left the church.

Earlier this month in a speech to Jewish activists in Washington, Obama referred to the e-mail campaign against him as one "filled with tall tales and dire warnings."

The Muslim rumors have persisted for months, creating occasional difficulties for the campaign. At a rally in Detroit this week, Obama campaign volunteers prohibited two Muslim women who were wearing head scarves from sitting in an area behind him that would be visible in photo and video footage. One of the volunteers reportedly cited "a sensitive political climate" as the reason.

Obama later apologized to the women and said the volunteers were not carrying out campaign policy.

Bloomberg noted in his speech Friday how racial and religious tensions have cooled, and remained calm, in New York City - an achievement for which he is often praised.

One thing he has learned, Bloomberg said, is that one must speak out against those who spread "fear and stereotypes."

"That's why I'm speaking out today," he said, "and I hope all of you will join me throughout this campaign in strongly speaking out against this fear mongering, no matter who you'll be voting for."

Asked later about the potential of being a running mate, Bloomberg said "nobody's ever going to ask me" but didn't rule out accepting the No. 2 job.

Frankly, I prefer Supreme Court Justices that find cases on the basis of the Constitution, very strictly!

I don''t want cases decided according to one Barak Obama''s social ism''s! When in the hell did the Constitution all of a sudden change to accommodate one Barak Marxist Hussein Obama?

Our judges will interpret the law as the consitution and their oath requires instead of making up laws as they go like the latest giving war criminals habeus corpus rights, something that has never been done in the history of this country in time of war.

I can tell we have another idiot here, unable to communicate at even a basis level: Habeas is not spelled "hebeus" and constitution is not spelled "consitution." As further proof of your ignorance, your history is incorrect. The only time habeas corpus has even restricted in war was by Lincoln, during the civil war.

You idiot! learn how to spell: Your is a possessive noun; it do not mean "you are," differently is not spelled "diffrently." When you expose such ignorance on such a basic level, it is only a symptom of a more profound stupidity. I would suggest you go back to kindertgarten and finish your education.

I am a Muslim; that does not make me a terrorist no more than being a Catholic would make me a paedophile. If on the basis of history alone, people would have more to fear from Christians than from Muslims. I have read as justification for the "terrorist" opinion that it was Muslims who killed over 3000 people in the World Trade Center. That is true; but does that mean that all Muslims are killers, terrorists?

It was Christians who killed over six million Jews in Nazi Germany; Pope Pius Xll was a friend of Hitler. But does that mean all Christians kill Jews? It was the Christians who killed million during the Crusades, but all Christians are not haters of Muslims.

It is the Christians who have killed over 800,000 Iraqis, wounded millions, displaced millions from their homes, and destroyed millions of homes. It is the Christians who are engaged in the illegal occupation of Iraq. Do I hate Christian? No, because the Holy Qu''ran teaches me that hate can destroy one''''s soul, make one unfit for the after-life. So I ask you Christians who engage in hate to do just one thing: THINK before you propagate hatred.

DEMOCRATS AND REPUBLICANS - TAKE NOTICE

-----------ROE v. WADE-----------

Two of the current justices of the United States Supreme Court will probably retire within the next four years. One is 75 and the other is 84. This will give the new president the ability to nominate two new justices. McCain has said if he has the opportunity he will appoint justices just like Roberts, Scalia and Thomas: willing to overturn ROE v. WADE. So think when you vote!!!

Yes, it will take the monkey business out of the courts. Our judges will interpret the law as the consitution and their oath requires instead of making up laws as they go like the latest giving war criminals habeus corpus rights, something that has never been done in the history of this country in time of war. Roe v. Wade should die. It''s an abomination and Obama is an ombination in that he would allow for unfetted abortions on demand at any tri-mester. He''s all for partial-birth abortion with is an horrendous procedure as well as letting children that survive an abortion die. It''s high time our Court straightens itself out.

Barack Huesain Obama,

Why do you consistently say your for the Jews when your actions speak diffrently? Most Jewish people are smarter than that. Dont worry I have emailed most jewish synagouges the information to investigate for them selfs. You should of stayed away from the Hamas backing Trinity United Church. (the so-called christian church)

If Barack Obama didn%u2019t know about Abunimah%u2019s writings (and Abunimah says he did), the same as his claims of being unaware of Reverend Wright%u2019s remarks after 20 years, then Obama is not competent to be our President. Abunimah likes to lie and claim Al Awda has nothing to do with the ISM or Electronic Intifada, though plenty of evidence exists on the website the homepage at www.StoptheISM.com showing the contrary.

But Obama%u2019s association with the ISM through his church and lobbying in Chicago goes even deeper than just his past links to Al Awda and Ali Abunimah. His pastor, Jeremiah Wright, and the Trinity United Church of Christ in Chicago, are both equally involved with the ISM.

A vote for Obama is a vote for higher taxes in an economy that can''t afford it. Wake up. His plans are all wrong- and people are just so stupid & blind- SO many walk around thinking they will get a change in government- with a Democrat- you will get NOTHING, and I feel sorry for those who are just plain naive.
15% today- is normal, three months from now- Obama will fall through the rabbit hole.

Well it''s official: Republicans, Democrats, and our illustrious media alike, have all gleefully embraced and accepted open hatred towards Muslims.

When did America become so utterly intolerant and hateful? Was it always this way? I guess now that witches can''t be burned, commies black listed, or black people sprayed with fire hoses, you idiots need something to do!?

Well I for one am not part of your sick, inbred group. I don''t fear Muslims. In fact, I''ve liked almost every Muslim I''ve ever met. So for all you haters out there, you are as cowardly as you are pathetic, and rest assured, your time is running out.
