Bali Bomber Warns Of Al Qaeda Attacks
Says Attacks "Very Likely" If He's Executed

Imam Samudra and two other Indonesian militants were sentenced to death in 2003 for their roles in the suicide attacks that killed 202 people, mostly foreign tourists, at two nightclubs on the resort island of Bali.
The three - who have admitted to planning and taking part in the strikes - are awaiting a final legal appeal to their sentences.
Samudra was interviewed in prison by a local hard-line Islamist magazine, Jihadmagz.
Asked whether al Qaeda would send operatives to Indonesia to launch attacks if he were executed, he said, "That is very likely. God willing, hopefully that will happen. Everyone knows that the armies of Allah are (everywhere)."
The magazine, which has a circulation of 10,000, hit newsstands in Indonesia last week.
The Bali attacks were carried out by members and associates of Jemaah Islamiyah, a Southeast Asian militant group whose leaders came under the influence of al Qaeda in the late 1990s when they trained and fought in Afghanistan.
Since then, militants have launched three more attacks on Western targets in Indonesia, the world's most populous Muslim nation. The latest attack, against restaurants in Bali in 2005, killed 12.
Indonesia does not announce executions in advance, but authorities have reportedly been preparing to carry out the punishment if the three men's appeal at the Supreme Court fails. Officials there have not said when they will rule on the appeal, which is known as a judicial review.

Malik Obama confirms his half-brother Barack grew up a Muslim
Apparently the Obamas of Kenya have no doubt -- contrary to the claims of the Obama campaign, that the presidential candidate was raised a Moslem. They take that as a given.
"Barack Obama''''s half brother Malik said Thursday that if elected his brother will be a good president for the Jewish people, despite his Muslim background. In an interview with Army Radio he expressed a special salutation from the Obamas of Kenya."

Obama Sides With Radical Islamists
The magnitude of difference between the two candidates running in our presidential election could not be more stark! After reading the statements of both Obama and McCain regarding the horrible Supreme Court 5-4 decision to allow Gitmo detainees the right to be tried in civilian courts, we can clearly see what a flawed, unfortunate, and terrible direction Obama would take this country if [God forbid!!]elected in November.
Obama''s statement:
Barack Obama statement on the Supreme Court''s 5-4 decision today extending civilian legal protections to terrorist suspects held in Guantanamo Bay:
Um...er...earth to Obama? Foreign terrorists caught in battle against our forces during war have never been eligible for "habeas corpus"! They are not covered by the Constitution of the United States of America. So...what "rule of law" are you referring to?

- Btw, do you know who used to be the US ambassador to Indonesia before being called to DC? (and whose office coincidentally stiffed me for about $2,000 in a cultural affairs concert promotion deal they reneged on after the event)
That''s right, Paul Wolfowitz.
"Why is Indonesia even allowing this magazine promoting the efforts of the cowards who attacked their innocent citizens to ''''hit the newstands''''?"

Part of the post-Soeharto reforms was the institution of freedom of speech. This magazine would not have been allowed under Soeharto''s rule. - Reply to this comment

In a country of 260 million people, a magazine circulation of 10,000 is not to be considered wide, in fact, it is so small that most people I know (and I know a whole lot of people there) have never heard of it.
It seems to me that this article is more a tool of the Bush/ McSame "homeland security" scare apparatus than anything else.
Don''t forget, Indonesia has an awful lot of oil, and Mobil-exxon has just been made to pump more of its profits back into the local community, which is one of the articles in the treaty that ended the Aceh separatist movement. - Reply to this comment

From more than twenty years experience in Indonesia, I can confidently say that had the victims been Indonesian, a well placed bribe would have secured his release, but now he is on death row awaiting execution. He is free to speak, but is by no means free, Indonesian prisons make any movies you might have seen about third world prisons seem like summer vacation.
Also I am personally aware of communications between the central Jakarta Government, and the Royal families of (mostly Buddhist) Bali, and you can be assured, Jakarta will not risk losing their #2 money earner for the sake of appeasement of a small fundamentalist segment of their population.
Jakarta has refused several times the calls of conservative Musloms for "anti pornography" laws that run counter to traditional values and interpretations of what constitutes pornography to the Balinesians, who have thousands of religious and decorative statues depicting nude figures, and who, eminently logical for a people living on a hot tropical island, don''t see nudity as pornographic. - Reply to this comment
- Article: "Samudra was interviewed in prison by a local hard-line Islamist magazine, Jihadmagz"
While I want to believe you, brianbwb, I still find it hard to believe that 6 years after they confessed to these gruesome murders, they are still alive and free to make threats to Westerners in hard-line Islamist magazines with wide circulations. This man is a mass-murderer, not an ordinary murderer. Are you so certain that if his crime weren''t an ordinary murder of an Indonesian, he''d have been buried long ago? I smell appeasement of a vocal Indonesian minority/majority here. As someone who has travelled in SE Asia as well, I know it happens. - Reply to this comment
- Btw, I am a "Black" American atheist, well known in Indonesia, and I do business in Bali, shuttling between Singapore and Bali at least once every two weeks, and I can say without doubt that not only is it safer in Bali than most US cities, but I can also say that I have encountered nothing but respect, kindness, and a tolerance that I don''t even see in America.

- Bali, since the bombings has created its own security force, trained by the Israeli (!) military, Jakarta was initially asking for a large amount of cash to beef up the security, Bali chose instead to create a more efficient force of Balinese, who would be less likely to be corrupted from HQ in Jack-town.

When one considers that almost 200 people who had known ties to this group have been eliminated during Mr. Samudra''s imprisonment, some in gun battles with military, some summarily executed in secret, It seems to this in-the-ground observer that Indonesia has done a pretty thorough job, it could even be called a bit draconian. - Reply to this comment
- "If this man wasn''''t Indonesian, or if most of his victims hadn''''t been non-Indonesians, he would have been hung two days after he confessed." Posted by ubrew12
Not everyone is a xenophobe like you, Indonesians have been known to defer far more to westerners than their own people, to their own detriment. This case has taken a while because justice has been using information to eliminate Mr. Samudra''s associates, and they have done a pretty thorough job.
Besides oil, Bali is one of Indonesia''s most lucrative income earners, at one time it was the #1 tourist destination in the world, because of its Shangri-la type beauty. Mr. Samudra messed with it, and not only will soon pay the price, but almost all of his known associates have been executed, any new "recruits" will have to be imported, as his, and his group''s name are now mud in the eyes of even the conservative Muslims in Indonesia.. - Reply to this comment

- There''s clear Indonesian racism at work here: This mans 202 victims were largely from Australian and America. As such, they were ''non-people'' who didn''t deserve quick justice. But THIS GUY, WHO CONFESSED to the murders SIX YEARS AGO, not only gets to continue living, he gets to THREATEN MORE MURDERS OF NON-INDONESIANS from his jail cell!
Honestly, cancel any trips to Indonesia or Bali until this kind of ethno-centric racism gets fixed. I''m an anti-Bush liberal, who HATES what Republicans have done to this country the last 8 years, but that doesn''t excuse CLEAR racist Bvllsh*t from other countries that excuse the targetting of vacationing foreigners just because of their skin-color. - Reply to this comment
