Prosecutor Jose Planas ordered the couple jailed after their civil wedding Friday, when the priest scheduled to perform the religious ceremony the following day said he received a call saying the groom, Jesus Alejandro Martinez, was actually a woman.
Same-sex marriages are illegal in Paraguay, and news of the arrest became the talk of the nation.
Planas had threatened Martinez with five years in prison for falsification of documents, and said he could charge the bride, Blanca Estigarribia, with complicity.
But the couple was released Monday. A doctor who inspected Martinez in jail ruled that he is a hermaphrodite, with atrophied female genitals and well-developed male genitals, according to the couple's lawyer, Jorge Cantero.
"Conclusion: He is a man," Cantero said.
He also said the document in the name of Jesus Alejandro Martinez is legitimate, meaning the forgery charges wouldn't have held up.
"So this case goes into the archives," he said. "It will remain as an anecdote for the media and a bad experience for my clients."
Martinez, who has some feminine traits, said he suspected an ex-girlfriend made the accusation to the priest.
"I always felt like a man, with no feminine inclination," he said.
Martinez said the couple would continue to live along the border near the Argentine city of Clorinda "where everybody knows us and loves us."

So Jesus is a hermaphrodite.
That should keep the Buy-bull thumpers busy for a while.

All of you Bible thumpers - PLEASE QUIT quoting chapter and verse from a flawed Bible.
Look up the history of Scotland and do some research about the Bible editor, King James.
If he was not an outright homosexual, he was at the very least very active bi-sexual.
Compare the King James Bible to other ancient, much older, Hebrew Biblical texts, and you will note there is not much mention of homosexuality in the older manuscripts.
It is well known that King James tweaked the Bible to protect his own beliefs and kingly prerogatives.
Enough already.
Anyway, when someone tries to defend the homosexual life, I remind him that Lev. 18:22 clearly states it to be an abomination. End of debate. I do need some advice from you regarding some of the other laws and how to follow them.
When I burn a bull on the altar as a sacrifice, I know it creates a pleasing odor for the Lord (Lev. 1:9). The problem is my neighbors. They claim the odor is not pleasing. How should I deal with this?
I would like to sell my daughter into slavery, as it suggests in Exodus 21:7. In this day and age, what would be a fair price?
I know that I am allowed no contact with a woman while she is in her period of menstrual uncleanliness (Lev. 15:19-24). The problem is, how do I tell? I have tried asking, but most take offense.
Lev. 25:44 states that I may buy slaves from the nations that are around us. A friend of mine claims that this applies to Mexicans but not Canadians.
Clarify?
I have a neighbor who insists on working on the Sabbath. Exodus 35:2 states he should be put to death. Am I morally obligated to kill him myself?
A friend of mine feels that even though eating shellfish is an abomination (Lev. 11:10), it is a lesser abomination than homosexuality. I don%u2019t agree. Please settle this.

There is always going to be SIN in the world and we can''t change that, but we can change ourselves.
Christianity does NOT bring "nirvana" - that concept is reserved for Satan''s relgious systems.
Christians are persecuted, murdered and abused by those living under Satan''s influence. What we DO have is PEACE. We know that nothing in this world can harm the spirit, which lives eternal.
However, I work hard to be the very best at my work. I enjoy competition, success and vacationing...
You are thinking of the religious control freaks. If you want that, you need Catholicism or Mormonism. Neither of those is Christian.

Tell that to the irreligious fruits. Nobody cares what they do, they often say they say it''s nobody''s business, but then make it everybody''s business, which is WHY religious nuts respond in the first place!
Fruits and nuts; this sounds like a freakin'' trail mix...
Good point. I would concur. There are many true religions on earth, and the biggest distinction of Christianity is the notion of grace, often described as forgiveness. For example in Buddhism you can attempt to rise through your own efforts, through complete renouncement of desire and a life in poverty and meditation. Christianity is for those who cannot seem to succeed through their efforts. It is the religion of one particular face of God, that of mercy or compassion, and thus is useful to those who need mercy or compassion.
Obviously the rich the successful the proud feel they are not in need of mercy or compassion, in fact they are angered by the implication that there is anything wrong with the world they''ve made. Perhaps for the rich this is indeed a wonderful world, perhaps for the ignorant the American suburbs seems like a wonderful dream instead of a soulless prison, sort of little Gitmos with nice lawns. Maybe Gitmo is only fun if you are one of the guards, but I suspect even the guards will have their moments of doubt and pain. So guard on, friend. Don''t be surprised if I don''t find your little suburban world so wonderful.
are you saying that the people of Peru are all nuts, because gay marriage is a crime there?
OK. They must be "nuts" to you.
How about the people of China, of India, of Iran, of Indonesia, of countless other countries where homosexuality is a crime? Are they all "nuts" too?
I guess the whole world is religious "nuts" and only Californians are sane. Yeah right.
Christians believe that Leviticus is the word of God, but generally do not consider themselves to be bound by all the laws prescribed by the text, due to the implied antinomianism in some passages of the New Testament, notably the letters of Paul. Most Christians consider 1 Corinthians 10:23-26, in which Paul directs followers to "eat anything sold in the meat market without raising questions of conscience", to exempt them from following the dietary laws set forth in Leviticus.

You turkey! If it weren''t for Catholics there would be no Christians at all! You are denying your parentage.

More like the Toe-Tapping Wide Stancers of the Reich Wing Neocon Nazi "Family Values" Squad......
You might also consider that not all religious people or even Christians are ignorant to the fact that the religion originated well before the Bible, and that the Bible leaves a lot of things out that were seen as too "mystical." Matter of fact, there are also plenty of us that know that Genesis is a creation myth, just like that of any other culture, not to be taken literally. So when you ask science to prove that the earth was created in seven days, keep that in mind. We''re not so ignorant as you are, as you are the first here to have engaged in name-calling and "stone-throwing". See: editorkim, you are ignorant!!

- Why on earth should gay couples be jailed? Where is the crime? Supposedly, in America we still have the right to the pursuit of happiness in whatever form it takes as long as we don''t step on other people''s toes or intrude on their rights. If two consenting adults of the same *** love each other, who''s business is it, but theirs? I am heterosexual, but hey if they don''t splash in my mudpuddle, I''ll stay out of theirs. My resentment comes in the thought that taxpayer dollars actually are spent to jail innocent people.
