A look at the life and meteoric rise of the president-elect.

(CBS/AP)  Al Gore is making his debut on the 2008 presidential campaign trail in support of Barack Obama.

Gore appeared with the Democratic presidential candidate Monday night at a raucous rally at Detroit's Joe Lewis Arena. His speech was part endorsement, part blistering attack on President Bush.

Gore said Obama can lead the country past "eight years of incompetence, neglect and failure." He said Mr. Bush, who defeated him in the 2000 election, dishonored and disrespected the Constitution and made the worst foreign policy mistakes in the nation's history.

Gore won the popular vote in the 2000 race, but lost the presidency after the Supreme Court ruled in favor of Mr. Bush in the disputed Florida election. Gore said, "Take it from me, elections matter."

The former vice president first told his supporters that he would endorse Obama in a letter sent out earlier Monday.

"From now through Election Day, I intend to do whatever I can to make sure he is elected President of the United States," Gore said in the letter, which was posted Monday on the CBSNews.com Horserace blog.

The arena pulsed with excitement as Obama supporters filed in to hear from the man they expect to be the next president of the United States.

An hour before the 8:30 p.m. start of the rally in downtown Detroit, thousands of people already had found their seats in the home of the NHL Stanley Cup champion Red Wings.

Portions of past Obama speeches played on the four big scoreboard screens to thunderous applause, reminiscent of crowds that screamed the Red Wings to victory throughout the playoffs.

As the "wave" rolled once from one end of Joe Louis Arena to the other, yells of excitement bounced off the walls and roof, drowning out the rock music blaring from speakers above the stage.

Aaron Mestel, 36, of Ann Arbor said he arrived about 5:30 p.m. and that the chance to hear Obama speak is worth the three hour wait. He's looking forward to a change.

"The other candidates all have said the same thing for so long," Mestel said. "It's good to see that someone can actually make a difference. He's an exciting candidate and it's nice."

Obama identifies with the people, said Cynthia Kelly.

The 39-year-old mother weaved through the rows of seats with her 9-year-old daughter and 8-year-old son in tow.

"This is a blessing," she said of Obama's rise and his first visit to Detroit since last July when he and other Democratic candidates participated in a debate at the NAACP convention in nearby Cobo Center. "I'm honored to bring my kids to see him so they can experience our new president."

The rally follows Obama's campaign appearance in Flint, where he told more than 1,000 people he wants to move America to a place where workers can compete in a global economy.

Outside the arena, street merchants were busy selling Obama T-shirts, including one for $10 that has the candidate's face on the front and the words, "Change we can believe in." The back says, "Yes we can."

Not only will BO secure the downfall of America by snubbing his nose at nuclear - his plan to vacate Iraq would surely end in destruction of the oil fields by rivaling tribes. We could easily see $8-9 gal within his first two years (think $4 lettuce... $5-6 bread) Obama is a DANGEROUS FOOL! And on top of that he is the son of a man in Kenya that supports (if not partakes in) the killing of non-muslims in that hellish country. Just read this: http://www.usvetdsp.com/jan08/obama_lou%

I''m impressed Obama entered the city of Detroit, Bush has managed to get no closer to Detroit than it''s neighboring suburbs since his days as Governor of Texass.

Oh, I''m pretty, pretty sure Al Gore talked about global warming again. Really, that''s all we''re gonna expect from him every time he goes to the podium and starts talking. There''s a new report that just came out of the Tennessee Center for Policy Research. Recall that a report came out in February of 2007 from the Tennessee Policy Center which stated that Al Gore''s mansion in Tennessee guzzled 20 times more electricity than the average household despite the fact that Al Gore goes around the world preaching about global warming and how we must cut back on consumption, and telling us on how to live. Well, this latest report states that Al Gore is consuming 10% MORE energy than last year, even though he installed energy-efficient home renovations like solar panels, and geo-thermal system that didn''t do the trick. He''s still going through 213,210 kilowatt hours of electricity a year. That''s enough to power 232 average American households for a month!! All of this, despite the fact that he received the inconvenient truth about the myth of global warming a year ago.

I tell you, Al Gore is so full of it. He''s a complete phony. He''s the biggest public fake in moderm times. He is like Jimmy Swaggart who''s selling Christian morality while he was getting serviced by prostitutes in a motel. Outrageous isn''t it??

Maybe McCain will have a heart attack the night before the election. Can you say "third Bush term"? Does that get you excited?

If this election doesn''t get people out to vote, I don''t know what will.

tbweb...I agree with you 100%. Sorry, all my post did not make it. I meant to include McCain too...We have a serious problem economically & financially and neither one has answered to the american people yet, yet alone told us how they are going to tackle it when either one of them get into the White House. One says cut more programs and the other says higher taxes..we''ll just have to see what comes of the next couple of months.....

You got into these small towns in Pennsylvania (I smell contempt) and, like a lot of small towns in the Midwest (when was PA moved to the midwest? Harvard doesn''''''''t teach geography as well as Austwitcz history?), the jobs have been gone now for 25 years (total lie, they were doing fine in the ''''''''90''''''''s) and nothing''''''''s replaced them," Obama said in an address to fundraisers in San Francisco last week. "And they fell through the Clinton Administration (total lie, they were doing fine in the ''''''''90''''''''s, total smear tactics), and the Bush Administration, and each successive administration (what successive administration''''''''s, Bush is still in office!!!! Harvard, again?) has said that somehow these communities are gonna regenerate and they have not (well, not since 2000, lol). And it''''''''s not surprising then they get bitter (imposing your disgusting mindset on others, are ya?), they cling to guns (I smell contempt for our 2nd Amendment right) or religion (I smell contempt for our religion!!) or antipathy to people who aren''''''''t like them (racism and contempt, pure and simple, stupid a/s/s) or anti-immigrant sentiment or anti-trade sentiment (love that free trade and cheap immigrant [slave] labor of other peoples, just not yours, right?) as a way to explain their frustrations (putting your disgusting feelings on others again, are ya--you don''''t know me, I''''m not frustrated at all, stupid a/s/s)."

Remember Algore''s Energy Hog Mansion, and how he promised last year to make it more energy efficient?
Now it uses even more electricity:

Algore is a hypocritical shyster.
Buy all of his carbon credits you can.

I don''t like Al Gore, I think he is a hypocrate especially regarding the environment and usage of resources. When his lifestyle matches mine, then, I''ll think his words have credibility.

If you think that you''re angry and depressed now... just wait until BITTER people like you end up getting McCain elected. You''ll REALLY be sorry that Obama didn''t get elected. McCain will keep us on the same course that G.W. IDIOT has us on and just wait until you lose your rights to even express your opinion if you don''t agree with the government.

Obama said yesterday, "I want everybody here to be absolutely clear: Senator Clinton is one of the finest public servants we have in American life today. She has been on the right side of just about every battle that we have fought. . . She is worthy of our respect, she is worthy of our honor."
If these aren''t just empty words, but if he really means them, and follows up by actually putting Hillary on the ticket, I, a continual critic of Obama, will become an enthusiastic supporter. The question is the one many of us have always had about Obama, "Is this guy just a good talker, or does he put his words into action?" We shall see. His election may depend on it. He cannot afford to have us Hillary diehards, a sizable chunk of the Democratic coalition still angry and depressed come election time.
