(CBS)  A Taliban suicide attack hit a U.S. military convoy in northeastern Afghanistan Friday, leaving at least nine soldiers dead, according to CBS News' British partner network Sky News and Taliban sources.

However, official with the U.S.-led military coalition operating in the area and a diplomat say no Americans were killed in the blast.

Shafiq Hamdam, with the International Security Assistance Force's regional command East told CBS News a suicide bomber in a car did hit a U.S. convoy Friday morning near a market, but only four U.S. soldiers were slightly injured and one vehicle was damaged.

A Western diplomat who knows the area well told CBS News he had contacted the Afghan government's military commander in the area, who confirmed that a man driving a white Toyota Corolla had rammed into a U.S. convoy, but the only death was the suicide bomber. The diplomat spoke to CBS on condition of anonymity.

Sky News's Alex Crawford, reporting from neighboring Pakistan, said the governor of Nangarahar province and other local officials had confirmed a suicide attack on a U.S. convoy near the Marko Bazzar in the volatile border area.

Mullah Shokoor, a Taliban commander who says he is the head of suicide operations for the Tora Bora region of Afghanistan, contacted CBS News Friday and said one of his bombers had carried out the attack.

He claimed two U.S. military vehicles were "badly damaged and 14 to 15 soldiers killed." The Taliban often greatly exaggerates its claims referring to attacks on Western troops.

Shokoor said the bomber was an Afghan man from Kunar province. He also said his brigade "has dozens of willing bombers" and promised continued attacks.

A local journalist in the area who visited the scene of the blast also told CBS News that only the bomber appeared to have been killed, and there were no apparent civilian casualties.

A statement found by CBS News on a Taliban Web site referred to an attack on Jalal Abad Torkham highway in Nangarahar province. The location matches the scene of the popular Marko Bazzar.

"Our brother said Allahu Akbar (God is great) and exploded his booby-trapped car at a convoy in which two tanks were destroyed and nine American soldiers in the tanks were killed," the Taliban Internet statement said.

In the statement, the author first referred on two occasions to an "Armenian" contingent being attacked, before claiming that "American soldiers" were killed.

The reference to Armenia was likely a typo, as there are no Armenian soldiers participating in the International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) - the military coalition operating in Afghanistan.

The Internet statement was attributed to Zabihullah Mujahid, a Taliban spokesman.

the story i just read (above) has references to the taliban claims ... and the statements from other sources characterizing the attack completely differently than the taliban ... includinng a reference to the fact that the taliban regularly exaggerate their claims.

Remember the Foreign Relations sub-committee that Obama rushed to lay claim as its Chair and whose sole responsibility it was to address issues related to the Afghanistan War just to puff up his resume to make it appear that he has in fact national security experience? This is the same sub-committe Obama has yet to call a meeting on for purposes of discussing all related issues to this war, because, well, he''s just too *** busy campaigning. Hey, Obama, are enjoying cowering behind this excuse because you quite frankly wouldn''t have a clue where to even begin on these pressing matters? I can''t help but think of how much better a place Afghanistan would be now if only the United States'' focus wasn''t diverted somewhere else. Now almost every five, six months Secretary Gates has to go before NATO and other bodies and beg members to send more of their military personnel to a theatre that is all but lost.

Complicity from Pakistani sympathizers obstructing the search for, in not protecting, Bin Laden and the Taliban on one side and drug traffickers elsewhere, feeding the corruption that has underminded the Afghan government in the midst of its'' nacency. RepubliCons and NeoClowns don''t even talk about Afghanistan anymore because it''s indefensiblity. The total failure of Cheney/Bush policy in this region eclipses even that of the Soviets of the 1980''s and will become legiondary in its repercussion for years to come.

Several people that I respect are of the opinion that the invasion and destruction of Afghanistan is somehow justified, as they view this invasion as being a righteous effort aimed at holding those responsible for the attacks to account.

I don''''t believe that Osama, or any sophisticated foreign "TERRA" network (other than maybe the Pakistani ISI and the Israeli Mossad) had anything to do with the events of 9/11/01, so there is no valid justification for us being there, in my opinion.

We invaded Afghanistan to:

A. Further destabilize that country

B. Revive global opium production (which was negligible under Taliban rule

C. Establish a military launch point for a campaign of aggression in the region (see Iraq)

D. Provide an overseas location to develop U.S. torture programs and secret prisons

E. Install a U.S. corporate-friendly puppet-ruler to plunder the resources of the region (see former Unocal executive and "Mayor of Kabul", Hamid Karzai)

F. Create a state of never-ending and unwinnable "war", for profit

Based on these criteria, much of the "Mission" has been "Accomplished".

Best of luck to the people of Afghanistan to unaccomplish it.

Hilbert II, in the Southern Division of the United States District Court for the Central District of California by a federal grand jury for the capital crime of treason for aiding an enemy of the United States (i.e. Al Qaeda). Gadahn is the first American charged with treason since 1952.[5]
