Arrest Made In Mugging Caught On Tape

Surveillance Camera Rolls As NYC Catholic Schoolteacher Is Punched And Robbed By Young Mugger

(CBS)  Police have made an arrest in connection to Monday's vicious mugging of a 62-year-old woman outside a Brooklyn Catholic school, CBS News affiliate WCBS in New York reports.

The mugger hit the woman so hard she fell past the wrought iron gate and landed on the pavement. In full view of a surveillance camera, the thief followed his victim in, grabbed her purse and ran.

The entire attack, which happened in front of the Good Shepherd School in Marine Park, was caught on tape by a surveillance camera. New York newspapers identified the victim as Patricia McGowan, a teacher at the school.

Police say the 18-year-old suspect was arrested after detectives linked him through other crimes. He attended a juvenile detention center in Yonkers, N.Y. and was also suspected in several other robberies, including two on food deliverymen.

Residents were shocked, saying the suspect was bold enough to return after the initial assault, while police were on the scene, to steal the victim's car.

The NYPD released the video, which shows the man punching the woman. As she hits the ground, the suspect is seen running off with her purse.

Police describe the suspect as a black man, approximately 5 feet 10 inches, wearing long black shorts, a white shirt and a backpack.

The victim is recovering from a swollen and bruised face. She is a teacher at the school where the attack took place.

"Seeing her fall to the floor, it was just horrible," Joseph Gencarelli, the father of one of her students told WCBS. "My son … that's all he talks about, 'My teacher. My teacher.' Here of all places."

"I think it's really horrible and it's a sin that this happened," third grader Christopher Caputo told the affiliate.

We''ve wasted years thinking prison = rehabilitation. Give first time offenders one chance, if they fail, then permanent removal from society is in order. Lets build more prisons, execute more murderers in the desert and not have to deal with them, anymore. We''re obviously incapable of enforcing current Laws so no point in making new ones

I THINK THERE SHOULD BE A LAW PASSED THAT MAKES IT IMPOSSIBLE FOR PEOPLE LIKE THIS ONE TO EVER BE OUT OF PRISON WITHOUT FIRST PASSING A STRICT POLICY OR REHABILITATION. HE SHOULD BE FORCED TO RE-EDUCATE HIMSELF IN EVERYDAY LIFE OF LIVING IT RIGHT INSTEAD OF THE WRONG WAY. MAYBE WHILE HE IS THERE HE CAN GET AN EDUCATION AND BECOME A PRODUCTIVE PERSON IN SOCIETY WHEN HE IS RELEASED..

While I tend to agree with this there is also the fact that there are kids on the streets
that have been raised by totally uncaring parents and have no thought for anybody but themselves. It is my belief that nobody should be able to have children until they prove themselves able and willing to care for them properly. If you have no values yourself, you can''t pass them on to your kids. (some form of reversible castration would work)

I have to agree with most of your comments here. But,there''s a reason why this misguided young man did what he did. It could be that he''s on drugs and cannot afford his habit. Or it could be as stated in the article. No matter what the reason is, he needs to be punished for his crime. I''M NOT A PSY. OR A MED. This story is funny not in the fact that it happened, but funny in the aspect of watching the liberals on here try to justify why it is "society''s" fault that this happened. Hence the reason why they are "Liberals"...to them, it''s everyone else''s fault. No personal obligation to succeed, etc....

Actually the definition of a hate crime is when a crime is commited by a person of one race on another race. So this woukld be a hate crime as well as a robbery and could carry additional charges, which i hope it does. Put this monster away for as long as possible. Someone made a point. There are people in society who refuse to accept responsibility for themselves today, but want to blame people in todays society for something that occurred over 100 years ago and more.

I worked for a welfare organization as a part of a college outreach program. People keep having babies and having babies and having babies again they cannot afford to have and there are no marriages in these instances because marriage might cut off some of the free taxpayer, working citizen sponsored benefits.

Its a real shame when a little girl''s entire ambition is to grow up and be on welfare
