The Texas congressman with a devoted following has tentatively reserved the Williams Arena at the University of Minnesota on Sept. 2, the second day of the GOP convention.
"We plan on having a large rally," said Paul spokesman Jesse Benton. "We want it to be a celebration of Republican values and what the Republican Party has traditionally stood for."
Benton also said Paul wants to send a message to the GOP "that we need to return to our roots" of limited government and personal responsibility.
The Republican Party will be gathering at the Xcel Energy Center in St. Paul for its four-day event that will end with McCain accepting his party's nomination.
University of Minnesota spokesman Dan Wolter confirmed in an e-mail that the Paul campaign has a hold on Williams Arena in Minneapolis, Minn.
Supporters of Paul have been pushing for him to have a speaking role at the Republican convention. In the latest Associated Press tally, Paul had 24 delegates.
The Pittsburgh Tribune-Review first reported on its Web site about the Paul event.

- McCain''s in a tough spot. He has to find a VP who''s competent and credible, but yet crazy enough to ride the Double Talk Express over a cliff in this election. In other words, he needs to find a walking, talking conundrum.
I''ve seen Lindsey Graham defending McCain on the talk shows, so maybe Senator Graham should run as McCain''s VP?!
However, I do believe I heard Senator Graham say he''s not interested in the job. I wonder why that is??? Why won''t Lindsey take a seat on the bus?
Heck, when John''s not hydroplaning, maybe Lindsey can get a few miles in behind the wheel. - Reply to this comment

- Ron Paul is the only real Republic left in Washington.
Johnny Mc & Chuck Haggel are half plastic and the rest like Bush and his backers all total frauds (RINO).
How to tell the difference between a neo.con and a real_con:
neo.con- loves war and knows how to profit from it
real_con- hates war and knows to use our military force only as last resort
neo.con- knows how to out spend "tax-n spend liberals" , create record deficits and cuts taxes only for the ultra rich
real_con- hates BIG government and wants to to cut spending & lower taxes for the middle class
neo.con- cares nothing for individual freedoms & the rule of law, is ok with allowing government to spy on citizen because they know it can be a useful political tool, loves the traitorous "patriot act"
real_con- does not trust the government and refuses to support surrender of liberties. Hates the traitorous "patriot act"
neo.con- says %u201Csupport our troops%u201D but means help me profit from this war, who cares what happens to those suckers when they come home, they signed up this this in first place.
real_con- says %u201Csupport our troops%u201D but means thank God for our brave men & women, let''s do everything we can to keep them safe and take care of them when they come home. - Reply to this comment

- ...To those of you that say "Obamas'' religious affiliations and choices are of no consequence in ref. to his political abilities"...I say it''s of "GRAVE CONSEQUENCE" in ref. to his ability to make proper choices period! What is this mans'' level of discernment and just whatinell'' is it based on? Can you tell me then to whom he is or has had advise him on political matters and/or to what politcal ideology he adheres to. Are you people so dazzled by his rhetoric to be crazy enough to let Him have the kind of power he seeks?

- Barack Obama of Illinois had the most liberal voting record in 2006. He was more liberal than 86 percent of the Senate. Chris Dodd of Connecticut was close behind - achieving a mark of 84 percent more liberal. Joe Biden of Delaware rated 77.5 percent. Hillary Clinton of New York had the lowest overall liberal score in 2006, clocking in 70.2 percent.

- This should be fun - a Ron Paul convention of crazies, cracking on the Republicans just up the street ! That should make for some great sound bytes, we''ll see who shows up and who says what. You Libertarians have a lot in common with the Marxists you know - they predicted the withering away of the State and a society that could stand up for itself with everyone producing what they can, and getting only what they need. They were wrong - and so are you. The only nations that have ever survived on earth have had strong central governments which served their masses, individuals and "entrepreneurs" have never had the wherewithall to build nations, it takes the organization and execution of governments. Just look at Mexico - the only reason they have a highway system or railroads or rural electrification is because of their central government. We were once where they are, you just can''t see it now. You Republicans are insane, and the Libertarians are even worse. What fun this election will be !

- From the intensity of comments here, nobody seems to give a sh**t about Dr Paul. Give him the sthetoscope and put him back behind his Doctor''s office! Barack is getting us where Americans need and want to be; kicking the Repukons out for 8-12 years.

Well that was refreshingly sane...are you getting this truthisstran? I''m just saying...he may very well be the great hope for the Republicans...God knows McCain doesn''t know half the time whether to scratch his watch or wind his own but.t. But some of the things Paul is quoted as being in favor of are extreme and I''m tired of extremely squeaky wheels getting all the grease...whether it''s extreme tree huggers calling all the shots on environmental measures or extreme conservatives calling for birth control pills to be banned world-wide...it''s an exaggeration but it still carries the same weight with people wanting more balance in control. Pelosi needs to be bound and gagged...but Republicans need their faces smacked for getting to a place where they can''t even come up with an alternative plan to these whacked out proposals the Democrats are coughing up like so much phligm! If Ron Paul can control his crazy followers he might just be the answer. - Reply to this comment

I''m a Paul-**** too. I have always been for the Constitution and learned very early that our gov wasn''t playing by the rules...
What most Americans want is to be told what to do, how to do it and when to do it....They aren''t interested in their government. The statistics today are similar to when Patrick Henry said "Give me liberty or give me death."
About 30% actually give a *** about their country....
From what I have gleaned, most people don''t think their vote will do any good and they really want to be taken care of. They think they''re standing on their own, but they don''t want the social programs to go away... Gee, it sounds like a welfare country to me... What are we to do about this..? - Reply to this comment
- I don''t agree with a lot of Ron Paul''s policies, but some of them do make a lot of sense.
