Mom Finds Snake In Crib With Baby

A Long Island animal shelter is a temporary home for a 1-foot-long snake that a mother found coiled on her 7-month-old daughter's leg as the baby slept in a crib.

Cari Abatemarco of upstate Troy says she was visiting family in Brentwood last week when her baby's cries woke her one night. She tells Newsday that she found a snake wrapped around her daughter's leg.

Abatemarco says she lifted her daughter and the snake fell off. A relative removed the snake from the crib and placed it in a bucket until animal control officers arrived.

The reptile has been identified as a California king, a non-venomous snake that's not indigenous to the region.

Abatemarco says her family doesn't keep snakes as pets. Officials say they don't know where the snake came from.

Okay, this is my nominee for non-news story of the year for this website. There have been some useless stories recently, but a foot long non-poisonous snake in a crib with a kid is a complete non-event. The kid would have been in as much danger had it been a footlong hotdog!

Hmm, non poisonous snakes don''t have venom--but they still have teeth--danger or not, the snake could have bitten ergo --harmed the baby and was crying for some reason. Either way--wrong place to get warm = dead snake. Take the pieces to the pet store to feed to their rats.

They dropped the snake in a bucket of water. Sorry snake lovers--if it had been me, no animal control--just a chopped, minced snake to become bird food. I''m surprised the mom''s instincts were not to kill whatever "harmed" her child or was perceived as a physical threat. Must be a PETA person. I''d have chopped that snake up and threw it out in hopes the other snakes would get the hint. LOL

I just can''t believe this is on a national news page. A baby snake, looking for warmth, and this is news? National news? Thirty years ago this would have been a blurb on the inner pages of the local newspaper.

Hi Salty1954,
The California King, at one foot, is a baby also. It was probably trying to get warm. Even if it had been around the baby''s neck, it couldn''t have hurt it.

"Had this occurred within the Chinese culture, it would have been regarded as a sign of great good fortune and many good things to come for an infant so favored. A non-poisonous serpent that kills other snakes, wrapped about the infant%u2019s leg would be viewed as a powerful protector and likely kept as an honored guest in that home. "

Or maybe they would have just wigged-out.

"no disrespect to snakes but what was george bush doing in the crib?"
-------------------------------------

No no. While Bush thinks he is royalty, the snake was a California King snake. Bush has never been to California, but he did have their electricity turned off once. He is not King.
The baby refuses to register with either political party, but did gurgle something that sounded like, "Don''t Tread on Me."

I know it''''s early, but the "not one article" as you say is in the upper right corner of the main page. "

timdgrim is right, the story is there, but you can''t comment on it. It''s by Politico, not CBS, I think that''s why. Hopefully CBS will think this is newsworthy, and the White House won''t suppress it as a matter of national security.

The snake was probably just trying to get warm. I''m glad they didn''t kill it, like most people instinctively would. No harm, no foul. Unlike the woman in South Carolina (of course) who just had to have a gun in her purse, then her 4 year old granddaughter shoots herself in the chest in a WALMART.

Even funnier, you can take a story about a child in a crib with a snake and make it into some political forum for your psychotic obsession with politics and trying to be clever. If I see "Dubya" never again, it won''t be too soon. Get a life and mind of your own.
