Shrinking Lake Reveals Long Missing Plane
24-Year-Old Wreck Was Discovered In A Drought-Stricken Texas Panhandle Lake
National Park Service officials said the Friday discovery on Lake Meredith was confirmed to be the fuselage of a small, two-seat Beech 77 that went missing during a two-hour flight on Jan. 27, 1984.
The 25-year-old pilot and a passenger died in the crash, according to a National Transportation Safety Board report.
In the first two days after the crash, one of the plane's wheels and a jacket believed to be the pilot's were found floating on the lake, the report said. The plane and bodies never turned up during a six-day diving search.
Park service personnel have closed the area around the wreckage so they can investigate the site, spokeswoman Rozanna Pfeiffer said in a news release.
Pfeiffer said Sunday more details might be released later in the day.
Lake Meredith, about 20 miles north of Amarillo, is at just 8 percent of its capacity of 500,000 acre-feet, according to the latest monthly report from the Texas Water Development Board.

- To AlGore2008: This is the first drought in Texas history. The ''dust bowl'' was a piece of fiction writing by great grand pa Bush to make people think that the climate wasn''t always perfect.

- I*m appalled at the administration*s lack of response to the global warming droughts, earthquakes, hurricanes, and cyclones as well. We have no comprehensive strategy in place whatsoever, let alone a detailed plan of action to mitigate the effects of these droughts, quakes and cyclones, and mother earth continues to suffer while the administration refuses to go forward and do what*s right for mother earth.
.
How long must we sit idly by while our mother continues to suffer from the warming taking place at a feverish pace? How long must our mother suffer before we have proper c02 taxes put into place? How long must the destruction of mother earth take place before we finally put responsible regulations into effect? How long must we wait until we beef up our corn ethanol production? At least Obama wants to cut c02 pollution by 80%; he is definitely our best hope.
.
We the people call upon our leaders to implement a comprehensive antiglobal warming strategy at once and work in coordination with state and federal officials; these droughts, cyclones and disasters continue to worsen and the quicker we stop the warming the sooner we will see these droughts and storms cease. We need action now. - Reply to this comment
- Can anyone tell me why they don''''t want to use the term "global warming" anymore???

Yep. Because the warming can trigger a disruption in the Gulf streams circulation of warm water to the North Atlantic ocean. It is believed that this is the kind of event that brought about the "little ice age" which was a dramatic cooling of the planet due to losing the warmth of the gulf stream. Biggest problem was the climate change ocurred within a couple of decades! So basically a little global warming could trigger an ice age. - Reply to this comment
- Some scientists think global cooling has begun... and the sun is still sleepy.

- BlackYowe, Spare me the Al Gore pseudo-science-scare tactics. The decreased glaciers result in greater percipitation in the Atmosphere. Native Americans got to this continent when the oceans were MUCH lower and they crossed land bridges just thousands of years, ago. Mother Nature still calls the shots regarding greenhouse gas emmisions.
I''m more concerned about polluted water, not a natural climate change.
Besides, I''m not stupid enough to move to a historically arid region and expect the Government to bring me H2O. - Reply to this comment
- Hello!--The new term is cliamte change. They don''t want anyone to use the term "global warming" anymore.

- yeah, without Global Warming, there would still be a 1/2 mile glacier over North America, as well. Too bad many people are too dumb to realize Global warming has been going on since the last Ice age...
