Bob Schieffer Says, With Mich. And Fla. Delegates To Be Seated (In Half-Chairs), The Result Is Inevitable

(CBS)  Weekly commentary by CBS Evening News chief Washington correspondent and Face the Nation host Bob Schieffer.
Despite all the hollering and general rudeness at the meeting of the Democratic Rules Committee that played out on television yesterday, by this time next week the primary season may finally be over, and both parties may have a nominee.

I know. I know.

When the committee gave those disputed delegates from Michigan and Florida only half a vote and dealt a serious blow to Senator Clinton's chances, her supporters shouted, "No-bama" and "McCain in '08." And her main man Harold Ickes threatened to take the fight all the way to the convention.

Even after what we heard this morning, I doubt that.

Here is why: Once we get through these last three contests this week, Senator Obama will be very close to having the delegates he needs to win the nomination.

When that becomes obvious, I expect a sizable group of superdelegates will swing behind him. They'll race to get the credit for being the ones who put him over the top - such is the nature of politics, and the desire to be on the winning team.

Once Senator Obama has those delegates in hand, it will be all but impossible for Senator Clinton to take them away from him - and she is smart enough to know the nomination wouldn't be worth much at that point even if she did: The bluster and bad tempers we saw yesterday showed how deep the division in the Democratic Party already is.

I think this thing is about done.

I do not want McCain for president, but i believe he will beat obama hands down. It again comes down to lesser of two evils, vote for the ignorant or vote for the devil himself. The only good thing i see coming out of this is the DNC will now have managed to finally destroy themselves. I will vote independent and hope the majority does the same. I cannot in clear conscious support a man i think is intent on destroying or country. I will never support obama or that racist pitbull he is marred too.

I remember someone, I think it was you Mr. Schieffer, a few years ago telling us that they almost missed the cigar smoking men in back rooms in politics. Well, you don''t need to miss them any more. As evidenced by this democratic primary and meeting over the weekend, they''re still there.

You''ve probably been the one bright spot on CBS news until this morning.

I don''t know whether John (One Foot in the Grave) McCain or Barack (Inadequate Experience on his Resume'' to Qualify for the Position) Obama will get the Presidency. I just know that we the people and the nation are going to pay a very heavy price for the fact that the media decided that it was more important to ignore candidates like Edwards, Biden, and Kucinich, hype, promote, and propel outright lies such as the "Hillary is waiting for Obama to keel over", and gloss over the flaws of the "chosen two".

PVperson -

Tut, tut. You Hillary-heads need to get over it and back Obama.

After all, you don''t want McCain appointing the next three justices to the SCOTUS .. do ya?

Vote McCain, the least of three evils.

"At minimum if he really wanted to unite the party, he''''d offer the 2nd runner up the VP position. We will NEVER, NEVER vote for Obama for this betrayal."

And why doen''t he paint a big bulls eye on his back, while at it, that says, "shoot me here".

I think it is quite apparent that it is not the American People who are voting for this years president. Just as they didn''t in the 2004 election and the election before that. These rules they make up on a whim, they won''t be counted, now they will be counted but by just half. Who makes the rules up as you go.

They new the penalty when they moved their primary, which should have been decided by the registered democratic citizens. They shouldn''t count at all!!! But for PR purposes....

Both HC and BO are both big losers. HC led her campaign from a sure thing right down into the toilet, lying through her teeth the whole way.
BO, with all of his fancy rhetoric, is nothing but an empty suit and we Americans already see behind his flimsy facade, in droves. For heaven sakes, he married himself and his family to that horribly divisive church and pastor for 20 years. And now, all of a sudden, when the heat is on, he resigns... 20 years too late. His judgment is poor to non-existent.

"delusional sense of entitlement".....Tell me Chuckamok, did you learn that phrase from your racist pastor or is it something you picked up from the gutter you live in? So Clinton people are sore losers huh, well what has Obama won? Not the White House, that''s for sure. Pinheads like you will guarantee McCain wins. Congrats on your so called victory. If should make the next four years of Bush policies so much more enjoyable for you.

He is correct. Very soon this fight will be over and the real fight will begin. The one to take the WH.

The reps will try and play on whatever bad feelings remain, but as I don''t that any lasting damage has been done, the democratics are going to line up and go after Fossil John and he will be toast by the end of summer.

I mean really!! His big thing is Iraq and the old man does not even know how many troops we have there! He is claiming that troops are at pre-surge level and he is off by 25,000 troops.

Either he is so deaf he cannot hear or he is so blind he cannot read or he is surrounded by incompetents! But to come out so totally wrong and then not accept the facts when presented to him only tells me he is just as arrogant as shrub and just as stupid!

Let''s not put another shrub in the whitehouse and Hillary won''t.

HOW IRONIC!

OBAMA IS CLAIMING HE IS THE DEMOCRATIC NOMINEE, AND TRYING TO CONN THE AMERICAN PEOPLE INTO BELIEVING,AFTER TWENTY YEARS, HE HAS FOUND SALVATION, CLEANSED HIS SOUL AND CHANGE HIS RACIST WAYS, BY LEAVING "NOT DENOUNCING" HIS RACIST CHURCH.

AMERICANS ARE BECOMMING MORE AWARE, AND INFORMED ABOUT THIS KING OF CONN MAN, AND WILL VOTE ACCORDINGLY.

"IT IS POETIC JUSTICE" THAT THE FATE OF OBAMA, REST IN THE HAND''S "VOTING HANDS" OF 17 MILLION CLINTON SUPPORTERS THAT OBAMA, AND HIS SUPPORTERS, HAVE CALLED RACIST, GUN WAVING, RELIGIOUS FANATIC, AND UNEDUCATED REDNECK "TRAILER DWELLERS". THESE VOTERS WILL SEAL HIS FATE, IN NOVEMBER, "IF HE IS THE DEMOCRATIC NOMINEE."

ALL THE WAY TO DENVER.

GOD "BLESS" AMERICA. NOT "G D" AMERICA.

Bob,

Rudeness? This was one of the most polite and peaceful protests I''ve seen in years. I was there. Were you even there on Saturday, May 31, 2008? Did you drive 1,500 miles to stand up for the rights of millions of disenfranchised voters? Were you there when 300 men and women, black and white, asian and hispanic, stood shoulder to shoulder in the thunderstorm and torrential rain?

This is what democracy looks like. It''s dying, because great people like you want to decide it for us. Instead of letting people decide as equal citizens - out of fairness for the plight of our people. For you this is a job. For us, it is the fate of our Nation, our families, the dying cities of Michigan, or the impending social security disaster in Florida.

Please return to honorable journalism. Return to the great journalist we once looked up to and admired.

Hillary served New York for eight years at least. Obama needs to finish his term and serve the people of Illinois in the Senate. What did Obama do so great in Illinois to merit him become the next president? He had 70 percent non-voting record of "present." It''s true that the Congressional democrats like Nancy Pelosi and Henry Reid have abandoned principal of helping the people for the politics of needing a presidential scape goat.

It''s clear that Barrack Hussain Obama will not win a majority of white and hispanics over. Black who are 80 percent supporters of Barrack, who vote on racial lines, constitute at best, only 10 percent of the national vote.

Obama offered Hillary a cabinet position. What an insult? At minimum if he really wanted to unite the party, he''d offer the 2nd runner up the VP position. We will NEVER, NEVER vote for Obama for this betrayal. We will not forget in November. We are marching to Denver.

Obama is not interested in uniting the party. He takes advise from Karl Rove. DNC party leaders have sold out. Just like he''s insulted Michigan and Florida with counting them half and stealing their votes - they didn''t even vote for him. He took his name off the ballot.

If Obama were genuine he would have at least served out a term. He''s never going to win - just like Gore and Kerry - losers. Oh yeah, we''ll see who''ll be crying November 8th. Obama = McGovern ;)

robby - That koolaid thang is SO last year.

But you Hillary-heads keep doing the Clinton bit - blame everybody ELSE for the Clinton face plant, one that will go down in history.

Face it: y''all blew a sure thing, with arrogance and that delusional sense of entitlement. Obama gamed the Clinton Machine, and now the Clinton Machine cries foul ??

Tsk. Sore losers.

It is truly amazing! You Obama supporters are as blinded as the Bush supporters. You are always crying foul and you refuse to recognize the votes of the people. What is up with that? Is the koolaide so strong and so popular that you see nothing but an icon instead of reality? It is important now more than ever to put someone who can take immediate action with the world and our country to realign with common sense and success. The oratory of a man that reminds me of Joel Olstein or any other sweet talker that can twist the minds of many men and women is scary! This will not lead us out of the severe economic problems we have or the alienation and destruction of our world ties.

I don''t really have as much of a problem with the DNC Rules Committee''s decision as I have with the pathetic behaviors of Mrs. Clinton and her backers. Being one of the stalwart DLC right-of-center crowd, there''s not much difference between Hillary and McCain other a chromosome and eleven years. So fine, vote for McCain. I''ve no doubt that the Obama grass-roots team can replace every Hillary defector with a handful of new voters eager to bury Bush, McCain and the Clintons once and for all.

Lost in all of this, though, is the fact that the GOP deliberately put the Florida delegation in this mess. To have voted NO on the early primary date would have meant voting NO on serious voting reform in Florida - such was the structure of the bill created by Governor Criss and his legislative allies. Election engineering is far from dead in the Sunshine State. If I were the Davids, I''d not spend a whole lot of time and money in FL because, like 2000, it''s not likely to be a fair election. Better to bring VA and CO and NM, etc. into the fold.

Cheers,
Michael

PS: Congrats to Bob on new agreement with CBS. YAY for one of the really good guys!!!

Michelle will make certain that the Hill-Bot is not on the ticket. Viva Michelle!

Instead I''d suggest Obama offer Hildebeast the Ambassadorship to Moldava. Or perhaps Abkhazia, South Ossetia and Adzharia. She can practice those corkscrew landings and dodging sniper fire while running to the limo.

There''s too much gloom ''n doom from the Hillary fans.

Look, McCain is no rigid right-winger. Granted he''s got a LOT of problems ... but compared to Obama and the Hill-Bot ??? Instead of an out-to-lunch novice or a pathological liar with steamer trunks for baggage you''ll get an experienced man with more honor than the other two combined (times sixty).

Does anyone REALLY want the purple-faced BubbaZipper anywhere near those intern lovelies again? Besides, the Arabs continue to own him and his "libberary" down in Arkansas. Do we REALLY need that?

The Dems - because of a strange confluence of reasons (and DESPITE the inept performance of ham-fisted Reid and Pelosi) - will increase their control of Congress.

So you liberals will get a steady stream of tax-ladened schemes to make everybody happy, healthy, wealthy and EQUAL. Which McCain will whittle down to something approaching sanity.

It ain''t perfect, but who promised you and Hillary a Rose Garden?
